You Can Call Me JakeNovember 7, 2021
Jacob spent most of his life fighting to get what he felt was rightfully his. Then onenight he met a foe he couldn’t defeat. Jacob’s wrestling match with God left himwith a limp and a new name. Developing a durable faith requires us to engage inthe tough battles. Through the intimacy and struggles that come with wrestlingGod in the discipleship process, we will also leave with a limp and a betterunderstanding of our true identity in Jesus.
Passage: Genesis 32

Small Group QuestionsUse this outline for personal reflection, as a couples or familydevotion, or with a small group.
Southside's small groups focus on the neighborhoods in which welive. We have groups that meet on campus, online, and in homesacross our city. Visit ssbc.org/SmallGroups to find yours!
HANGOUT (warming up to the topic):1. What is your most treasured possession? Why is it special to you?How do you physically set it apart? What, if any, special protection orhonor do you give it in the way you keep and/or display it?
What was special about Bezalel and Oholiab? Who gave him his specialabilities? What were they?Read Ephesians 2:10. How does this verse relate to Bezalel and to all ofus? What ability, intelligence, knowledge, and/or craftsmanship has Godgiven you? How have those gifts set you apart for God and His purposes?
What is God setting apart (sanctifying) in these verses? What was Hispurpose behind setting this aside?Could the Sabbath law be understood as God’s act of setting aside Hispeople for His glory and purpose? If so, how? If not, why not?Read Mark 2:23-28. Given what Jesus said about the Sabbath, how doyou understand its purpose? Based on the idea, should we see thesabbath as God’s control or God’s love? Why?
3. Read Exodus 31:1-11.
4. Read Exodus 31:12-18.
5. What would be different about your life, work, hobbies, relationship, time, talent, and treasure if you really believed you were set apart as holy to theLord? What changes would you need to make to be “set-apart” for God’spurposes?
HUDDLE (making it personal and praying together - in huddles):6. Is there anything in your life that separates you from God and preventsyou from being fully sanctified for His glory? What is it? What do you needto do to address that issue? Talk about it, invite accountability, and praytogether.

HEAR (listening to God through Scripture):
What comes to mind when you hear the word “sanctified” or“sanctification”?What does it mean to be “holy to the Lord”? Can you think of anyoneabout whom this could be said? Can you think of biblical examples of people or objects being“sanctified” or set apart for the Lord?
2. Each week, during What’s in a Name, we are considering differentnames the Bible uses for God, what they mean, and how those nameshelp us come to know Him better. This week we’re considering the nameJEHOVAH-MEKODDISHKEM meaning "the Lord Who Sanctifies You" or"the Lord Who Makes You Holy". This name for God appears two times inthe Bible (Exodus 31:13 & Leviticus 20:8). Sanctification is the process ofseparating or dedicating a person or an object as holy to the Lord.
This week we continue readingthrough the book of Isaiah. As youread, pay attention to the names . . .names of God, names used to describeGod’s people, names given to Isaiah’schildren, and names that will be usedfor Jesus.
Day 1: Isaiah 37
Day 2: Isaiah 38
Day 3: Isaiah 39-40
Day 4: Isaiah 41
Day 5: Isaiah 42-43
Day 6: Isaiah 44
Day 7: Isaiah 45-46
