A MESSAGE FROM

My dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Our identity is one of the most important qualities

about ourselves – who we are, where we come

from, and where we are going. When we lose sight

of our sense of self or place in the world, we often

go through an “identity crisis”. In those moments,

we find ourselves asking: Who am I? How we an-

swer that can heal our past, define our present, and

redirect our future. Today, let us reflect on the important

themes of IDENTITY and MISSION in our Sunday Gospel.

Jesus knew his identity and mission as the Suffering Servant

prophesied in Isaiah, but the crowds who followed often mis-

understood or even rejected him. For this reason, Jesus asked

his disciples: "Who do you say that I am?" Once again, Peter

professes his faith: “You are the Christ.” Jesus not only affirms

this but also teaches them about discipleship: “Whoever wishes

to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow

me.” To his listeners, the cross evoked a chilling image of Ro-

man execution, unlike the way we see the cross today. Jesus

gives us the same criteria for discipleship. Are we willing to

follow him, knowing what is asked of us?

When we find ourselves searching for an identity and pur-

pose, let us remember who Jesus is and what he has done for

us on the Cross. We are called to live out and share the Good

News despite trials and persecution. “Whoever loses his life for

my sake and that of the gospel will save it.” Like Peter, many of

us want to follow Jesus but are afraid of suffering. We want

the crown of life but fear martyrdom. May the Lord reassure

us and free us from our fears. May the Holy Spirit transform

our faith into works for the good of our brothers and sisters

in need.

Are we ready to renew our mission, pick up our

cross and follow Jesus? When we are misunderstood

or ridiculed for our faith, can we trust in the promis-

es of Christ?

Fr. David Vivero

tidad". En esos momentos, nos preguntamos: ¿Quién

soy yo? La forma en que respondemos puede sanar

nuestro pasado, definir nuestro presente y redirigir nuestro fu-

turo.

Jesús no solo afirma

y seguir a Jesús? Cuando somos incomprendidos o ridiculizados

por nuestra fe, ¿podemos confiar en las promesas de Cristo?

Grandparents and grandchildren share a special relationship. To help you celebrate this holiday, here are a few ideas for making this day a special time for your family.

1) Pray Together Use symbols such as candles, water, seeds, and the cross.

2) Make a Photograph Craft Grandparents love photographs of their favorite kids, so incorporate pictures into a project.

3) Interview Grandparents Times have changed since grandparents were young, and kids will be fascinated to find out what life was like when grandma and grandpa were growing up.

4) Perform a Song A performance dedicated to your grandparents will be a special memory. Sing a song for grandma and grandpa, or send an audio or video recording.

5) Bake a Treat Adult relatives can help kids bake muffins or cookies for their grandparents.

6) Offer Thoughtful Services Grandparents do many things for their grandchildren, so the kids can use their own abilities to reciprocate.

7) Record Your Family’s History Family trees, scrapbooks and personal anecdotes gathered from various relatives can all be special keepsakes.

8) Hold a Sleepover Adults can “step up and offer to coordinate a sleepover” for the grandkids at the grandparents’ house.

9) Send a Homemade Card A card is a loving gift for grandparents both near and far, especially if it’s handcrafted. Or, “Make a homemade puzzle card.

10) Cook a Meal “The kids can organize planning, preparing and serving a meal to grandma and grandpa".

No matter what you decide to do in honor of National Grandparents Day, if it’s done with love, it will be special to grandma and grandpa.

All Are Welcome Here If you are alienated or upset, we welcome you lovingly. If you are in

need of forgiveness, Jesus forgives you completely—with unconditional love. If you have been hurt by the Church, we are truly sorry. If you are angry, Jesus offers you peace. If life has become burdensome, we are here to support you. We are happy you are here and want you to stay. We would like to share our lives with you. Come join us each week so we can worship God together.

We Serve...

Transforming Lives Through Faith and Service

“How do we involve lay people in service to the

communities in need Florida through the Church?”

Catholic Volunteers in Florida is the answer to

that question. Originally known as the

Augustinian Volunteers, the organization was

founded by Fr. Patrick O’Neill, in 1983.

1) The interest among people (particularly Catholic

laity) to give service to the community, live out our

faith and promote Catholic Social Teachings.

2) The expanding need for human services

throughout the state of Florida due to growing

population, growing migrant labor force, and

budget cuts.

Many volunteers say that this program has

changed their lives. CVIF allows volunteers to

learn the true importance of giving back to the

community. Call CVIF for more: 407.426.7771

Brought to Constantinople after a dozen years of priestly service in Syria, John found himself the

reluctant victim of an imperial ruse to make him bishop in the greatest city of the empire. Ascetic, unimposing but dignified, and troubled by stomach ailments from his desert days as a monk, John became a bishop under the cloud of imperial politics. If his body was weak, his tongue was powerful. The content of his sermons, his exegesis of Scripture, were never without a point. Sometimes the point stung the high and mighty. Some sermons lasted up to two hours. His zeal led him to decisive action. Bishops who bribed their way into office were deposed. Many of his sermons called for concrete steps to share wealth with the poor. The rich did not appreciate hearing from John that private property existed because of Adam’s fall from grace any more than married men liked to hear that they were bound to marital fidelity just as much as their wives were. When it came to justice and charity, John acknowledged no double standards. Aloof, energetic, outspoken, especially when he became excited in the pulpit, John was a sure target for criticism and personal trouble. His ac-tions taken against unworthy bishops in Asia Minor were viewed by oth-er ecclesiastics as a greedy, uncanonical extension of his authority. Theophilus, archbishop of Alexandria, and Empress Eudoxia were deter-mined to discredit John. Theophilus feared the growth in importance of the Bishop of Constantinople and took occasion to charge John with fos-tering heresy. Theophilus and other angered bishops were supported by Eudoxia. The empress resented his sermons contrasting gospel values with the excesses of imperial court life, and she finally did manage to have John exiled. He died in exile in 407.

T Saint John Chrysostom

We often see the letters “IHS” emblazoned on vari-ous objects in our churches and homes. What do these letters stand for?

IHS is a Christogram, that is, it’s an abbreviation for the Holy Name of Jesus. In the early centuries of the Church, writers would contract the Holy Name by using the first two letters or the first and last letters. I (iota) and H (eta) are the first two letters of the name Jesus in Greek. In the Christogram “IHS,” the third letter, S (sigma), has been added.

St. Bernardine of Siena, a Franciscan priest, employed the IHS symbol as a way to calm sectarian strife, encouraging his listeners to replace the fac-tional symbols on their homes, churches, and buildings with IHS. When he preached, he kept before him a tablet emblazoned with this Christo-gram, one that had sunrays bursting forth from the holy letters.

St. Bernardine’s devotion to the Holy Name and his promotion of the IHS Christogram played a major role in reviving the Faith in 15th-century Italy.

You can continue St. Bernardine’s mission by proudly displaying the IHS symbol in your home or workplace. (Article reprinted from the Catholic Company)

Canonized by St. Pope John Paul II in Rome on Oct. 18, 1987, St. Lorenzo

Ruiz was martyred during the persecution of Christians in Japan during

the 17th century while on a missionary expedition. A layman with a wife

and three children, he lived out his faith as an active member of his parish

community. In addition to being a patron for laypersons and married people, he is

known for being a saint of the poor because he was a poor sacristan from Binondo,

Manila. He is also a patron saint for artists because he was skilled in calligraphy when

he was employed by the Dominican Fathers. His feast day is Sept. 28.

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI canonized St. Pedro Calungsod on World

Mission Sunday in 2012. The saint was martyred April 2, 1672 when he

was 17 — one week before Palm Sunday. He began serving God when he

was 13 as a missionary for the Jesuits. With Jesuit Father Diego Luis de San

Vitores, he traveled to Guam to catechize the native Chamorros. They were

attacked and killed when the village chief learned his baby daughter was

baptized. It is believed St. Pedro could have escaped the attackers but did

not want to leave Father Diego alone. His feast day is April 2.

The Apostleship of the Sea of

the United States of America

(AOS-USA) is pleased to

confirm that our two

organizations have formed an

alliance wherein Catholic Cruises and Tours (CC&T) will

source all of their priests for

cruises and tours through AOS-

USA.

The alliance between our two organizations ensures that, by our organizations working together, Catholics sailing on cruises will

have priests ministering to them that are vetted by AOS-USA and

certified as priests in good standing by their respective Competent

Authorities.

Help support our Priest program onboard our cruise lines. Our

responsibility is to vet each Priest that boards any of our over 1000

cruises. So that Catholics can feel comfortable knowing that they can

take their FAITH ON A JOURNEY.

Ministry onboard cruise ships may sound like a great vacation, and it

is...but that's not all it is. It is also a wonderful opportunity for the Catholic priest to encounter and accompany people during a very

special time in their life. Many people on cruise ships are taking a

once in a lifetime cruise. Others are celebrating major events such as

Wedding Anniversaries, Retirement, etc. Still others are traveling

because they've lost a loved one, and are perhaps traveling during the Christmas season because it is too hard to be home without their

loved one at Christmas. Help us continue our efforts to make sure

that Catholics can attend Mass daily on their journey.

For oh so many reasons....the priest is needed and appreciated

onboard ship!

Our Faith Community

A New Academic Year Begins

Dear SVDP Family,

Greetings to you on this day dedicated to

the mother of the great St. Augustine, the

Patron Saint of the mother Diocese of Flori-

da and of the oldest Catholic community in

our region, indeed, of the whole United

States. As St. Monica prayed for her son, we

know that she is praying for us and for the

mission of our seminary from heaven.

We are concluding orientation this weekend

and preparing to begin classes on Monday

with a total of 118 seminarians enrolled at

St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary. I

would like to let you know of three events

in the coming days that will be live-

streamed, so that you can join with us,

whether you prefer to do watch the live

transmission or the recording. While we

have begun the year more normally than

last, we are still not able to extend open invi-

tations for all to come to campus for

Wednesday Masses. I hope that these op-

portunities will allow you to join with us in

prayer and reflection as we continue our

essential mission.

On Monday, August 30, at 4:30 pm, we will

celebrate the Mass of the Holy Spirit, to ask

the Holy Spirit to guide us throughout the

new year of formation. Later that same

evening, at 7:30 pm, we will have the

Opening Academic Exercises, officially

inaugurating the academic year. Finally,

on Wednesday, September 1st, we will

livestream the first Wednesday 12:15 pm

Mass of the year, which will be a Memori-

al Mass for our beloved Fr. Nicholas Cach-

ia, who passed away on July 28. All of

these livestreams will be available at

www.svdp.edu/live or on the Seminary

Facebook page.

Know of our prayers for you; please pray

constantly for us. In a particular way we

remember our mothers, living and de-

ceased, as we honor today the special pa-

tron saint of mothers. I am certain that

God will respond to our prayers, as He

did to those of St. Monica.

In Christ the Good Shepherd,
