Obstacle detection challengesare amplified on large mobilemachines in comparison toautomobiles. With increasedvehicle size and multiple blindspots, and as more auto mationis introduced, the need foroperator assistance becomesmore crucial.
ifm introduces the 3D SmartSensor with patented PMDtechnology. The Smart Sensorprovides full three-dimen sionalimaging for mobile machines.
Mounted in front of or behindthe vehicle, ifm’s 3D SmartSensor can identify size, distance, relative trajectory and relative speed of up to 20objects in its Field of View.
Applications• Distance monitoring• Obstacle detection• Collision avoidance• Line guidance

Single point detection Single plane line scan
A sensor with single point ofdetection may not be reliablefor indicating objects.
ifm Solution offers advantages vs. single point and line scan sensors
Traditional line scanners are astep up from single pointsensors. However, they only seeobjects on a single plane.
ifm's 3D Smart Sensor, based on PMD's Time of Flighttechnology, captures the entire scene in three dimensions. It can identify multiple targets, moving or stationary, andreport back their location, size, speed and trajectory atdistances up to 35 meters.

Obstacle detection and collision avoidanceifm has developed a new generation 3D Smart Sensor to assist mobile vehicle drivers in detecting obstacles that they may not see.
The sensor's time-of-flight sensing principle with PMD technology enables the sensor to capture entire objects at extremely long distancesin three dimensions.
The sensor lens (70° x 23°) creates a large Field of View while a separateIR illumination unit ensures sensing ranges up to 35 meters.

INNOVATIVEifm’s 3D Smart Sensor usestime-of-flight distance measure-ment and photonic mixing device (PMD) technology toidentify an object in its field ofview. The integrated 64 x 16smart pixel array measures 1024 points of distance to anobject in the field of view, capturing the entire object inthree dimensions.
ROBUST Withstands shock, vibration, temperature fluctuations, moisture, dirt and ingress.
FAST Frame rate: up to 50 frames per second.
RELIABLE Operates in full sunlight up to 120k lux.
FLEXIBLE Outputs via CAN (J1939 andCANopen) or Ethernet.

IR Illumination
In the scene above, four objects are detected within the path of a yellow vehicle.
The 3D Smart Sensor identifies thesize, distance and relative speed ofeach object within its Field of View.
This data, shown in the example tothe left, is then output to the controller.
The Smart Sensor detects up to 20 objectsin the path of a vehicle.
PMD Time of Flight technology Ensures detection of scenes and objects with just one imagecapture in three dimensions.
Long-range detectionThe 3D Smart Sensor is optimizedfor long ranges and can detectmoving objects at a distance ofup to 35 meters.
On-board processingAll images and application dataare processed on board, and theresults are communicated viaCAN or Ethernet.
Easy set-upThe application parameters arequickly established with theSmart Sensor’s ‘Vision Assistant’software. Ready-to-use functionblocks are available for those sys-tems using CODESYS software.

Object detection
The 3D Smart Sensor can detect up to
20 stationary or moving objects in
the Field of View. Once detected, the
information such as distance to, relative
speed and relative trajectory are calcu-
lated within the Smart Sensor for each
object. This information can be transmit-
ted via CAN or Ethernet to the vehicle’s
controller.
Crash prediction
Crash prediction combines critical infor-
mation from the Smart Sensor (distance,
relative speed and trajectory) and the
vehicle’s controller (speed and braking
distance) to intelligently signal to the
vehicle's operator of an impending crash.
Application example:Automatic detectionof reflectors
Highly reflective objects, includingsafety vests, can be detected and distinguished fromstandard non-reflec-tive objects.
Area surveillance in harsh environments
5
Distance monitoring
The distance monitoring function
allows the user to simply detect
the closest point to the Smart
Sensor within a user-defined
region of interest.
For the harshest environmentsifm’s Smart Sensor is encased in robust, completely sealed IP67 /IP69K housings and can withstandhigh levels of shock, vibration, EMIand temperature extremes.
Resistant to extraneous lightThe PMD technology ensures highrepeatability of the measured data even in direct sunlight (up to 120k lux)
CommunicationsApplication data collected by theSmart Sensor can be communicatedover CAN or Ethernet.
Reliable and fastAllows fast and reliable calculationof 3D information. Frame rate: upto 50 frames per second.

Line guidance and edge/swath detection
The 3D Smart Sensor has the ability to
recognize a swath or mound of material
and determine the position in the Field of
View. This information, sent via CAN or
Ethernet, can be used to assist the opera-
tor in navigation or automatically guide
the vehicle.
Application example:Grape harvesting machine
The Smart Sensor transmits all relevant data to enable automaticsteering along the grape row tothe machine control system, relieving the driver.
High-performancemeasuring systemThe Smart Sensor’s multi-phasemeasuring system provides reliable repeatability of measureddata, even on reflective materi-als, and is unaffected by harshconditions.
Multiple sensor operationMultiple 3D Smart Sensors can be reliably used in the same environment without interfer-ence or crosstalk.
Integrated diagnosticsIntegrated self-diagnostics alert the operator in cases of interference or heavy soiling tothe Smart Sensor.
Transport and logistics
Application example:Height monitoring fortankers
The integrated ‘minimumdistance’ function can simultaneously monitor up to 64 selectable pointsabove the vehicle. This distance data can be usedby the operator to properlyapproach the target pointof the aircraft.
8
Height and distance monitoringfor airport vehicles
9
Application example:Assistance for aircraft tractors
By monitoring a pre- defined area, the 3D Smart Sensor can either pro-vide an end position message or a contour image of the nose wheelto the vehicle control system.
In this example, the 3D Smart Sensor capturesthree user-defined regions of interest. The distance between the Smart Sensor and eachregion is determined.
This distance data istransmitted via CAN orEthernet to the vehiclecontroller.
Application example:Positioning assistancefor support vehicles
More than 1,000 individual measure-ments preciselydetect the target area of the aircraft.
Grouped into pre -defined regions ofinterest, distancemonitoring becomesa reliable method ofpositioning a vehiclerelative to its target.

In the above example, the sensorcan reliably detect the small target at 5 meters because more than 2 x 2 pixels define the object.

The 70° x 23° opening angle of the 3D Smart Sensor createsa large Field of View. With the Illumination unit, the sensoris able to see objects at a distance of 35 meters.
Pixel size is key when detecting objects within the Field ofView. The longer the distance to the detected object, thelarger the pixels become on the object.
We recommend that the object be a minimum of 2 x 2 pixelsin size for reliable detection.
When the same small target (ex. A) is detected at 25 meters, the pixels becomelarger in size and are too few to definethe target for reliable detection.
Small target at 25 meterscannot be reliably detecteddue to pixel size.
