1 Introduction

The 4404 is an AES11 digital audio reference signal (DARS) generator. It is designedto lock to a video reference or wordclock and provides eight continuous orinterrupted AES tones and two wordclock outputs.

The module may be used in the 1050 3U and 1051 1U ICON modular productrackframes with a choice of balanced or unbalanced rear connectors.

Characteristics of the 4404 are:

• eight outputs to AES11-1997 at 110Ω balanced or 75Ω unbalanced

• switch configurable 1kHz or 500Hz audio tones to EBU R68 or SMPTE RP155.

• left channel interrupted or continuous

• alternative positive pulse outputs at 25Hz, 250Hz or video reference frame rate

• analogue 525/625 video and wordclock reference inputs

• two wordclock outputs

• compatible with Pro-Bel COSMOS status monitoring

3.4 Adjusting the 48kHz on-boardoscillator

In the absence of any reference the on-board screened PLL will run at 48kHz ±50ppm. This is set at the factory by RV1 and should not require readjustment.

5 Trouble shooting

The green card edge POWER LED is not lit

• check the PSU indicator to confirm that there is power to the frame

• check the resettable fuses protecting the card - do this by removing the powerto the card for about 30 seconds then restoring the power

• if necessary, refer to the power supply trouble shooting guide in the appropriateICON rackframe manual section

There are no output signals

• ensure that the green power LED on the front of the main card is lit

The output signal seems corrupted

• if a wordclock reference is used, check that the green AUDIO LOCK LED is lit

• if an analogue video reference is used check that the green VIDEO LOCK LED is lit

• check that the red LOW REF LED is not lit

• check that the appropriate termination has been set

• check that the appropriate video standard has been selected

• check that the appropriate sample rate has been selected

The output signals cause pops and clicks in downstream equipment

• check that the reference used has the same phase and frequency as all otherdigital audio equipment used in the system

Note: It is recommended to employ a common station video reference or a commonAES11 reference for all digital audio equipment if accurate phasing to station signals is required throughout a facility. The 4404 should meet the timing requirements ofAES11 under these conditions.
