WHAT IS PERISCOPE?

Just over a year ago, we became fascinated by the idea of discovering the world through someone else’s eyes. What if you could see through the eyes of a protester in Ukraine? Or watch the sunrise from a hot air balloon in Cappadocia? It may sound crazy, but we wanted to build the closest thing to teleportation. While there are many ways to discover events and places, we realized there is no better way to experience a place right now than through live video. A picture may be worth a thousand words, but live video can take you someplace and show you around. Periscope.tv

SIMPLY SPEAKING PERISCOPE IS …

Periscope is a new social media platform available since March 2015.

It is an app for smartphones that works alongside Twitter, allowing users to live stream videos, interact with your network and other users from around the world.

Periscope uses a different approach than Instagram or Vine; it allows you to create your video in real time.

TIMING

Timing is everything! Study your Twitter audience to see when you have a lot of activity, and schedule your Periscopes about your book or book events during those Twitter rush hours to get the most exposure. Why? Because your Periscope is connected to Twitter, and that’s where you will be promoting your videos.

VIDEOS

You can save the promotional videos for your book launch or signing to the app (for 24 hours) or on your phone’s camera roll. (You’ve got to have a lot of memory to do this.) Or save them on katch.com for ever and ever!

RECOGNITION

Make your Periscope easy to find! Remember even though Periscope is one of the new kids on the block, it is growing like wildfire. If you want to get noticed, be conspicuous. On Periscope, you have the option to do a public or private broadcast. You may want to do a public broadcast if you are doing a book launch. You may want to do an exclusive private Periscope if you are sharing tips with your favorite fans or a book club.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

Don’t forget to share your location on Periscope by turning on the “location tagging” to announce when you are broadcasting on Twitter. Also turn on Twitter sharing and your broadcast will be shared with your Twitter followers in a tweet that looks like this: LIVE on #Periscope: [Video Title] [Link to Video].

TWEETS ARE SWEET

When introducing a new book project or announcing the birth of your book baby, do a Periscope broadcast.Remember, your broadcast will be available for 24 hours. Schedule tweets to your followers that allow those followers in multiple time zones to take advantage of viewing your latest video about your book.
