Service Learning and Civic Engagement
Service Learning and Civic Engagement
Service learning is part of academic experience, linked to our academic discipline, then the community becomes a teaching tool program, it’s about turning difficulties into opportunities, disadvantages into advantages
You learn about self-growth, and when you learn that you can learn new methods and techniques, if we continue to grow service learning and civic engagement in our regions but first we must work in growing ourselves, making Jordan a better place to live in.
We must have high expectations in order to achieve our goals, it’s about being a part of this community not an object, and you have to learn how to surf. When you learn about service learning and civic engagement we contribute to develop the community, it doesn’t matter whether you’re young or old, male or female, able bodies or disabled, there is something you can do!
I learned from Galway workshop the ability to structure my time, working and networking with others in creating a sense of accomplishment. Being a valued member of the community and after that we can make a new place. Its about being a part not an object

Service Learning and Volunteering
The term “service learning” has been used to characterize a wide array of experiential education endeavors, from volunteer and community service projects to field studies and internship programs.
Service Learning and Volunteering
Service-Learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.
Through service-learning, young people—from kindergarteners to college students—use what they learn in the classroom to solve real-life problems. They not only learn the practical applications of their studies, they become actively contributing citizens and community members through the service they perform.

The next step in AABU..
Service Learning can be applied in our university in two forms
Officially Unofficially
Officially (More compulsory Courses)
Currently we have one course for the service learning (Graduation Project)
Soon there must be compulsory courses for all students
There will also be final projects for such courses to serve the NGOs and other community parties
Unofficially: (The IVP)
IVP: Infinite Volunteering Program
IVP (Cont.)
The idea of the IVP is a Lab/Room in which workshops and training will be conducted for the students to maintain the sustainability of the volunteering process.
IVP (cont.)
The roles and duties for the participants are:
1. Each participant must teach another
person/group what he has learnt
2. Participant must serve the NGOs
IVP in depth..
IVP
Formal
Informal
Virtual
There are three forms:
Formal:
Sessions and lectures..
Informal:
One-to-one training
Virtual:
Over the internet and Social Networks
Balamand students will be taking the initiative to create new community based projects departing from the knowledge acquired in their class rooms,
Motivated by Service Learning courses that we were enrolled in,
Depending on the help of our professors.
Future of Service Learning at UOB
The Mediterranean Development Forum
Example
The Mediterranean Development Forum
This forum was proposed by 2 colleagues at university
A group of 30 students from different majors was formed to organize and work on the development of the Forum
The major aim of this Forum is enhancing development in our region through identifying problems that we are facing and shed a light on the opportunities that we can benefit from in our region.
Interaction between students from different countries and cultures is another aim that we are willing to achieve throughout our Forum.
The Mediterranean Development Forum
As a whole team, we believe that our forum will have a positive effect on our country as a whole, on our university in particular and on us as individuals.
As a part of the scientific committee, I had the chance to suggest allocating sessions and projects related to Service Learning, Volunteering and Community Service.
These sessions can be similar to what we did in Galway but on a smaller scale.
Will this project create opportunities to integrate & relate theory to practice?
Will this project enhance partnerships between the university and the wider community?
Will this project increase the civic, academic, personal & professional capacity of students through experiential learning?
