Something that surprises you.

The word ‘Seven Wonders’ came from ancient Greek tourists.They chose the number seven because they thought it was the

best number.There are Seven Wonders of the Ancient (old)World and Seven

Wonders of the Modern (new) World.

What are the 7 Wonders?The seven structures considered by ancient and medieval scholars to be the most wondrous of the ancient world.

The Seven Wonders of the ancient world are all located in Europe. Specifically, in the Mediterranean.

1: The Great Pyramid of Giza

Built 2584-2561 BC.They are in Egypt.They are tombs

(graves) for the Pharoah Khufu.

2: Hanging Gardens of Babylon

Built around 600 BC. in Iraq.They were huge gardens built by King Nebuchad-

nezzar for his queen.

Built 435 BC. in Greece.Zeus was the king of the

ancient Greek gods. It was built in Olympia to

honor Zeus and the Greek Olympic Games.

4: Temple of Artemis at Eph-esus

Built 550 BC. in Turkey.Artemis is a Greek moon

and hunting goddess.The temple was destroyed

around 200 CE by the Goths.

5: Mausoleum of Halicar-nassus

Built 351 BC. in Turkey.It was a tomb for King

Mausolus.His wife, Artemisia

built the tomb for her husband after he died.

6: Colossus of Rhodes

Built 292-280 BC. in Greece.It was a huge statue of the

God Helios over the sea.The statue was 110 feet

high and stood on a 50 foot base.

Only 56 years after the statue was built, it was top-pled by an earthquake.

7: Lighthouse of AlexandriaBuilt 280 BC in Greece.It was the tallest building in the

world for many centuries.It helped ships find their way

safely into harbor.Scientists believe an earth-

quake topped the Lighthouse during the 12th century.

The Taj MahalIt is in India.It was built in

1648 CE.It is a tomb for

the third wife of Emperor Shah Jahan.

The Coliseum

It is in Rome, Italy.It was built in 80 CE.It was used for en-

tertainment - sports games, fights, plays, etc.

The Great Wall of China

It is in China.The Chinese started building the wall in the 6th century CE.It was built to protect the country from attacks from ene-

mies.

Petra

It is in Jordan (in the Middle East).

It was built around 100 BCE.It was the capital of

the Nabataeans.

Statue of Christ the Re-deemer

It is in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

It was built in 1931.

Redeemer = someone who makes you better.

Machu PicchuIt is in Peru.It was built

around 1450 CE.It was the sum-

mer palace of the Inca emperor Pachacuti.

Chichen Itza Pyramid

It is in Mexico.It was built around 600 BCE.It is a temple in

the Mayan city Chichen Itza.
