Faithful Sayings We have noted that there are four times in the epis-tles of Paul to Timothy and Titus where Paul speaks of “a faithful saying.” We noticed last week the faithful saying in I Timothy 1:15 - “that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.” Today we want to look at a second faithful saying, this one found in 1 Timothy 4:8, 9. “For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having prom-ise of the life that now is and of that which is to come. 9 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all accep-tance. 10 For to this end we both labor and suffer re-proach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe.” There is some dispute as to what is the faithful saying. Is it what Paul had just said or what he is about to say? We know that the entire Bible is a faithful saying but the par-ticular faithful saying here seems to be what Paul just said. “For bodily exercise profits a little. But godliness is profitable for all things having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.” We must exercise ourselves unto godliness. The word translated as “exercise” in the Greek text is gum-nazo which “primarily signifies to exercise naked; then generally to exercise, to train the body or mind (English, gymnastic).” The Greeks were strong in athletics. Every town had a gymnasium. Every Greek boy 16 to 18 years of age had gymnastics as the main part of his education. Physical exercise is good but it must be in proper proportion with exercising in godliness. In I Corinthians 6:19, 20 Paul said, “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's.” Our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and we need to glorify God in this body. Exercise is necessary to keeping this body in good shape so we can do the work God has given to us but it is limited to this life only. This body, re-gardless of how much we work to keep it strong and ac-tive, will eventually decay and die. However, spiritual ex-ercise is profitable both for this life and for the life to come. Therefore, we need to exercise ourselves to godli-ness. How do we do that? We exercise ourselves physi-cally by using this body to run, lift weights etc. Likewise we can exercise ourselves spiritually by using ourselves to study God’s word, and applying what we learn to our lives. This would involve abstaining from that which is harmful to our spiritual lives and by teaching others the will of God. In that way we will grow stronger spiritually.
