October 2015

Volume 2, Issue 2

A Message from our Principal

October is a month when

we settle in and get down

the job of new learning.

Staff have been collecting

data from many areas to

help inform their planning

and they meet often to look

at this data to determine

the next steps in their

teaching as they continue

our focus on improving

student achievement and

well-being. We are very

pleased with the way our

year has begun and the

intentional work staff and

students are doing to get to

know each other and work

together. Our professional

learning continues to be

about ensuring authentic

mathematics instruction

within a Comprehensive

Math Program.

I’m happy to see students

use their agendas daily!

This newsletter, student

agendas, the Meadowbrook

website, our Twitter

account and school

functions are all excellent

vehicles for communication

as long as they are used and

maintained by all of us.

We’re already into other

activities that make

Meadowbrook a wonderful

place to be! Our cross

country runners are

practicing often and are

reaping the rewards of their

hard work! Our Terry Fox

run was such a

heartwarming event as our

older student leaders

cheered on the younger

students as they ran to

celebrate Terry. Our

Intermediate Volleyball

team has begun their

practices and the music

room is alive with Honour

Band and Glee Club. As

well, we are continuing our

partnership with Big

Brothers and Big Sisters and

their “Go Girls” and “Game

On” programs have begun

at lunchtimes. Thank you

to all Wildcats who

participate so

enthusiastically in school

activities; to the staff who

organize them and to

families who offer so much

support.

Please never hesitate to call

if you have any questions or

concerns; the door is

always open!

Enjoy your October!

Facts of Lice available in the school or at your

local pharmacy, along with

special shampoo needed to get

rid of the lice and nits.

Now that we are back in school,

it is a good idea to check your

child's head for head lice and

nits. Head Lice infestation

(Pediculosis) can happen to

anyone. There is no reason to

panic if your child has head lice.

Although head lice are a great

nuisance, they are definitely not

a health problem.

As well, the treatment is safe

and effective, but you must

follow the directions carefully

and follow certain procedures to

get rid of the nits.

It would be greatly beneficial if

you check your child. If you are

unsure of how to do this,

information pamphlets are

Meadowbrook P.S.

This Month’s Theme is:

“RESPONSIBILITY”

We are accountable for all

of our actions. We follow

through on our

commitments.

The breakfast club will be

returning to Meadowbrook. We

are in the process of getting

everything set up. Stay tuned for

more details.

Cross Country Meadowbrook Wildcats are well

into their Cross Country

training.

We have an enthusiastic group

of about 37 students practicing.

They are running 2 times a week

on day 3s and day 5s.

On October 9th the team will

go to Richardson Park to

represent Meadowbrook in the

Area meet. We wish all athletes

luck on their run.

School Council Corner support programs in the school

such as Scientists in the

Classroom, library books for the

Forest of Reading program,

technology and much more.

First pizza lunch will be on

Wednesday October 7th and

will run until

Wednesday

December

16th. If pizza

lunch is

suspended due to unforeseen

circumstances, you will be

credited for that day’s order.

We will be continuing the

The next parent council meeting

will be on Monday November

5th at 7PM in the school library.

Babysitting is available if needed;

please let us know so we can

arrange the babysitters. All

parents/guardians are welcome

to attend.

We will be launching our

fundraising program with QSP

and Norcard. This is will begin

on October 6th and run until

October 23rd. All monies raised

through fundraising are used to

“Campbells Labels for Education“

program this year. For every label/

UPC code/lid we are able to earn

points to purchase supplies for the

school. Please see the attached

flyer for all applicable products.

Then just send in the label/UPC

code/lid to the school with your

child and we will take care of the

Terry Fox Event organized morning

announcements, class visits to

talk about Terry Fox, collected

money and even created a music

playlist that kept us running.

On Friday, October 2 our

students participated in the

annual Terry Fox Run. This year

we stayed on school property

and ran along the top of our hill.

Our theme this year was

“Celebrating Terry” and our goal

was to run for as long as we

could, just like Terry did each

day of his Marathon of Hope.

The Wildcats braved the cooler

weather and windier morning

and honoured Terry’s memory

and fight to cure cancer by not

only running themselves, but

encouraging their friends to keep

running as well.

Meadowbrook raised over $300

which is then donated to the

Terry Fox Cancer Foundation.

A special thank you goes out to

the Terry Fox Leadership Team

of dedicated grade 7 and 8

students: Amy, Elizabeth C.,

Endri, Tina, Abbey, Shauna, Will,

Jeremy, Tyler, Nolan, Nick D.,

Elizabeth S., Kayla, Nicole,

Emma, Brianna, Arriana, Jaeden,

Lauren, Tristan, Jack, Xander,

Griffin, Jayden, Ewan, Rylie, Ryan,
