Relation: Any set of ordered pairs
Any relationship between two variables can be written as a set of ordered pairs

A function is a relation where each first coordinate appears only once in all ordered pairs

No, there are many possible outcomes when you input a value of 3
![Page 22: AA Section 1-4](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052412/5583e310d8b42a423f8b4e66/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Vertical-Line Test
![Page 23: AA Section 1-4](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052412/5583e310d8b42a423f8b4e66/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
Vertical-Line Test
If a vertical line can be drawn ANYWHERE on a graph and only touch the graph once, it is a function. If the vertical line
touches more than once, it is not a function.
![Page 24: AA Section 1-4](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052412/5583e310d8b42a423f8b4e66/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
Example 2Consider the line that is parallel to the x-axis and goes through the point (1, 4). Would this be a graph of a function? Justify
your answer.
![Page 25: AA Section 1-4](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052412/5583e310d8b42a423f8b4e66/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Example 2Consider the line that is parallel to the x-axis and goes through the point (1, 4). Would this be a graph of a function? Justify
your answer.
This line is horizontal, so it passes the Vertical-Line Test. Thus, it is a function.

second is not (other than a vertical line).
