standard; or, 3. help students perceive the significance of the
standard to their daily lives.
Review of draft standards alignment maps:

• Distributed at California Science Teachers Association annual conference in San Jose
• Five regional field reviews with K-12 educators (Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, Bay Area, Sacramento/Central Valley & Redding)
• On-line discussion forum — October-November
• Three regional orientation sessions for environmental organizations/education providers (Los Angeles, Bay Area and Central Valley)

Purpose of the Model Curriculum
It will be designed to:
• help students achieve mastery of academic standards at each grade level with clearly defined learning outcomes that are aligned to California’s academic content standards
• provide a learning continuum from K-12 grade for teaching the Environmental Principles and Concepts
Task Timeframe
I. Establish an inter-agency Model Curriculum Planning Committee (governmental) 12/04
II. Define goals and scope of model curriculum e.g., standards by grade-level 1/05
III. Identify grade-level sequence of instruction to achieve mastery of academic content standards and EP&C — based on standards alignment maps
1/05-2/05
IV. Outline instructional plans that connect teaching standards and EP&C 2/05-3/05
V. Interagency committee of EE providers (CEEIN members) develops self-review criteria and reporting documents —grade-level applicability; alignment to mastery of academic content standards and EP&C
12/04-1/05
VI. Invite CEEIN members and other EE providers to self-report on materials 2/05-3/05
VII. Conduct educator needs assessment (10,000 teachers ) — e.g., format for Model Curriculum
3/05-4/05
VIII.Formulate process for developing writing teams for Model Curriculum 3/05-4/05
IX. Compile components into draft Model Curriculum Plan 3/05
X. Review draft Model Curriculum Plan with Education Partnership 3/21/05
XI. Review draft with Model Curriculum Planning Committee — revise and finalize 4/05
