NAPLAN Results 2017 Students in Years 7 & 9 that participated in the NAPLAN testing have received their 2017 test results. Students were given these to take home this week. If parents did not receive these results can you please contact the school so that we can provide you with a copy. As I have mentioned previously, the NAPLAN testing provides a snapshot of individual student learning and should be used together with other forms of assessment including teacher assessments and reporting. As a school whilst we are interested in individual student results, what we are more interested in from the NAPLAN is whole school and cohort/year level data. The 2017 results for Oberon were once again very pleasing and reinforced the capabilities and academic growth of our students. In summary the results indicated that, on average, our students at both Years 7 & 9 are performing at the State average benchmarks for all of the areas of Literacy (Reading, Writing, Spelling and Grammar/Punctuation) and at a similar level in Numeracy. The pleasing thing about the results again, this year was the academic growth that was achieved by Year 9 students from their results in Year 7. The results once again reflect that Oberon High students are improving on average at a rate faster than the State average in Reading, Writing, Spelling and Grammar/Punctuation and at the expected State rate for numeracy from Year 7 to Year 9. School Production

On Thursday 24th August I attended the School Production of ‘CreepyTown’. It was great to see so many staff, students, parents and other family members in attendance to support the staff and students who were involved in putting this production together. I wish to congratulate all of the students who were cast members and also to the staff members who supported Mrs Deidre Pike, Mrs Bronwyn Knight and Mr Vlad Filipovski in the organisation of this production. It is great to see the students performing on the stage. The Production continues tonight Friday 25th and Saturday 26th August and I encourage school community members to attend . School Council Meeting

At our School Council meeting on Wednesday 16th August we had State MP for Geelong Christine Couzens attend to discuss a range of issues around the relocation of the school to Armstrong Creek. These included future bussing arrangements and future funding timelines. Christine has informed School Council that she will follow up on the issues raised with relevant Ministers and authorities. Year 7 & 8 Student Led Conferences

On Wednesday 30th August, Year 7 & 8 Parents/Guardians are encouraged to participate in the student led conferences whereby their children will be able to showcase a portfolio of work on their iPads that has been undertaken across the subjects that they have undertaken. School planning 2017

The school is currently planning for the 2018 school year.

If you are aware that your son/daughter is not returning to the school for the 2018 could you contact the school and leave a message with one of our Assistant Principals. Bogong Leadership Camp

Two staff members and twenty Year 10 students will be participating in the DET Bogong Leadership Camp from Monday 28th August till Friday 1st September. Staff PD Day

As part of the recent Staff Professional Development day on Student Mental Health, we heard from a range of guest speakers relating to this topic from DET Regional Office together with welfare staff from our school who have undertaken extensive training in this area. The feedback from staff was very positive and we will continue to undertake further training this year and into the future to ensure that the mental health issues of both staff and students are identified and addressed early. Thank you to Mrs Michele Crichton who organised the day. German Poetry

Congratulations to Year 7 students Kai Bowie and Phoebe Connelly who qualified to compete in the State Final of the German Poetry Competition on Saturday 19th August in Melbourne. A great effort by both students to qualify, with Kai placing fourth overall. Thanks to Ms Liz Ray who supported the students. Tim McMahon

Absence Hotline - 0439 326 767 Issue 12 - Friday 25th August, 2017

YEAR 7 STUDENT - LED CONFERENCES On Wednesday 30th August, all Year 7 and 8 students will be presenting a digital portfolio to highlight work and learning completed in classes in 2017. The work is to be presented on their iPads and they will lead a conversation with their parent/s about each of the work tasks displayed. The conference will be centred on their learning, how they will act upon feedback received and how this relates to their Semester learning goals. Students have just begun to put their portfolio together and the onus will be upon the student to choose work samples to include.

This is a celebration event and designed for students to showcase their efforts in Year 7 & 8, not to discuss behaviours and everyday class matters. The conferences will run from 1:20 - 6:30 pm on this day, with all students still to attend school on this day. A letter has been sent home with your son/daughter with further information.
