Mr Patel was a truly great Territorian and one ofAustralia’s pioneers of multiculturalism.

LESLIE NEWTON PENHALLLes’s passing marks the end of
an era of an early post- WWWII venture in the NT.
In 1947, Les Penhall, Ted Evans and Kyle Littlewere employed as Patrol Officers of the Native Affairs Branch
of the Northern Territory Administration.
They had the environmentally very risky and sociallyvery onerous task of ensuring that all employed
Indigenous people in Territory received their rightsand that they and their families were cared for.
I joined that expanded team in 1955 and I want torecord now the friendship Les extended to me then
and the great help that he gave in my job at the timeand throughout our years working together.
My wife, Elva and my family join me in offeringour deepest sympathy to Scotty, Julie and Chris.
