Was it the weeks and months of preparing
to have lots of family and friends come into
town? Could it be that our house was
literally undergoing intense construction,
i.e., that darn roof, days before Gabriel’s
Bat Mitzvah? Was it feeding our family and
friends for a week? I don’t know. I’m tired
but in a good way.
I feel first of all so proud of my daughter
and the incredible number of hours she put
into preparing to chant her aliyot, lead the
congregation in prayer, and deliver a
fantastic sermon. She is a delight and I am
proud of her brother Shane for his
understanding and support. I can’t tell you
how wonderful it was that so many
members of both Paul’s and my family
came out to California to be with us. This
was the first time they had seen each other
since our wedding. It was nice to see Paul’s
uncle Bruce laughing with my brothers. I
was also happy to invite all of Gabriel’s and
our friends as well.
I was especially proud of our synagogue.
I wanted to show off our musicality on
Friday night and you didn’t disappoint. We
are lucky to have a talented choir and
musicians along with our gifted Cantorial
Soloist Nancy Linder. Friday night was a
great Shabbat experience and Saturday
morning, was well, outstanding. I’m so
appreciative of the patience and expertise of
our B’nei Mitzvah Educator Larry Matalon.
It was a pleasure seeing him work through
the eyes of a parent. One highlight for me
was seeing members of our TBD board
come up for a group aliyah. Paul and I felt
honored by our lay leaders and
congregation’s support of our daughter’s
Bat Mitzvah.
Thank you for your love and support
during this simcha.

SISTERHOOD MATTERS!
By Ruth Kramer, Sisterhood President
The drum beat of the Dragon Dancers still
linger in the Social Hall from the fun-filled evening
on Feb. 8 honoring our Annual Paid-Up members
of Sisterhood and Brotherhood. Kudos to Anne
Farber, Marlene Wedner and Elaine Netzer - our
membership co-chairs, who worked with the
Brotherhood to create a fun evening with a Chinese
theme. Mickey Lewin designed the lanterns and
Chinese favors and thanks to all those who helped
setup and cleanup.
Of course we are
grateful to the
Brotherhood, Scott
Telford and Lee
Netzer who helped
make it all possible.
Paul Prunty once
again entertained all
of us with his clever
antics and auctioned
the numerous white
elephants items.
And a special thanks
to Scott Whiteside
who is always there to help us with whatever we
ask of him.
On March 6 our Sisterhood will be
represented at the Visions fundraiser at the Jewish
Federation of Greater Long Beach event co-chaired
by Leslie Kern. Our own Renée Dorfman is among
several other women in the Orange County-Long
Beach area to be honored. Renée has served in so
many capacities at our Temple, our Sisterhood, and
in the community and she continues with her good
work. Congratulations, Renée!
The Kitchen Renovation Fund is growing
in hopes that the kitchen improvements can begin
in June. We are awaiting final approvals from the
Orange County Health Department and the City of
Westminster. The kitchen, used by all arms of the
Temple, is planned as a modern-user-friendly place
for all to enjoy. Please indicate on your donation
that it is for the Kitchen Fund.
The Sisterhood had a fun day at Pechanga
Casino on January 28th – even if you don’t care
about gambling, it is a fun, relaxing day and a
comfortable bus ride. The casino presented the
Sisterhood with a check for over $700 for our visit
there all which will be added to the Kitchen fund.
So stay “in the know” for the next Pechanga trip,
most likely this summer. Kudos to Edie Schwartz
who takes care of the arrangements for this fun day.
On January 30, Sisterhood celebrated
Women’s Heart month with a special presentation
by Dr. Leslie Kern and KeriGee Semmelman
concerning heart health issues and relaxing
techniques for women. Thanks to both Leslie and
Keri Gee for their expertise on these important
concerns.
We are in the process of preparing for
Sisterhood Shabbat this month. Our speaker will
be Rabbi Robin Hoffman and we are all looking
forward to this special Shabbat.
Please support our Social Action project
organized by Debbie Lelchuk on Sunday morning,
March 9, by donating women’s toiletry needs:
combs, toothbrushes, toothpaste, bath soap, etc.
(see flyer in the Megillah) and if you want to order
hamentaushen to take home, your order must be in
the TBD School Office by March 9 .
Remember that sponsoring an Oneg is a
wonderful way to celebrate a special family event,
anniversary or birthday. Please contact Eileen
Tobey for your special occasion.

We are a fellowship of men who are members of
Temple Beth David. Get to know the
Brotherhood if you are a man who cares about
Temple Beth David! You can serve as a member
of our board or just volunteer for events we
organize throughout the year.
The Brotherhood monthly meeting was held the
second Thursday of the month. February 13,
2014.
The Brotherhood/Sisterhood paid-up
dinner on February 8th was truly a
wonderful evening. We had Dragon
Dancers, the theme was the Far East. We
even had a visit from our auctioneer in
residence, Paul Prunty! Special thanks to
Paul and our Culinary Chair, Lee Netzer
for making the whole thing run so
smoothly. Special thanks to Ruth Kramer
and the Sisterhood for the wonderful job
they did in decorating the room for the
event.
Our Feb. 23 brunch was exceptional! It
featured a panel discussion moderated by
Charlie Niederman. Rabbi Myers put
together a panel consisting of herself
representing Reform, Rabbi Joel Berman
representing Conservative, and Rabbi Drew
Kaplan representing the Orthodox view to
compare and contrast the different sects of
our religion.
Members of the The Jack Broscow
Brotherhood will be honoring Larry
Davidoff at the Man of The Year Dinner!
Larry was selected by a committee of
former Men of the Year. Larry is
recognized for his years of service to
Brotherhood including filling the positions
of Publicity Chairman and Membership
VP. The Man of the Year dinner will be
on March 1st at Temple Hillel in Valley
Village.
The “Above and Beyond” program
recognizes men from Long Beach and
West Orange County by the Jewish
Federation of Long Beach. Gene
Broscow is the honoree from Temple Beth
David. There will be a program on
Wednesday, March 19th.
Congratulations Gene!
Don’t miss our next brunch on March 30th,
“Jews in Baseball.” Look for more
information in the Megillah. Robin
Harrison is putting together an informative
program together with Donald Swartz.
The Brotherhood is continuing to serve at
the religious school Shabbat dinners.
Special thanks to Charlie Neiderman,
Robin Harrison and Jeff LeBoff.
Brotherhood participation in the Dining
Delight program is in full swing. Gene
Broscow set up up a Dining Delight at the
Gourmet Café in February. Jerrold Korn
will set-up Dining Delights at TGIF on April
8 and Long Boards on June 9.
The Yom Hashoah candles have been
ordered. Each year the Brotherhood
orders candles for the Temple Beth David
congregation. The Brotherhood will be
needing volunteers to help put the
candle packages together. If interested,
please contact me.
The next Brotherhood meeting will be on
Thursday March 13, 2014! These meetings are
open and all brotherhood members as well as
any men interested in learning more about the
Brotherhood are welcome to attend.

The Early Childhood
Learning Center is excitedly
preparing for the upcoming
holidays. Purim is always a
favorite around here, with
its costumes and cooking. This year, as
always, we are having a Purim parade
when we march through the temple in
costume, bringing gifts of homemade
cookies and treats to our neighbors, the
children of the Preschool. The little folks
there look forward to our arrival and even
learn a little bit about Purim. It’s a nice
cultural exchange that benefits us all. If
you find yourself near the temple on
Friday, March 14 at 9:15, come join us –
we guarantee a fun morning!
The younger children at our school have
been exploring the many colors of the
rainbow and starting to recognize letters
in their own name. The three year-old
class has been learning all about the body
while continuing their alphabet unit. The
Pre Kindergartners have been “Reader
Rabbits” as they recently took a field trip
to Cerritos Library and had a wonderful
time exploring an area designed
specifically for young readers like them.
Wishing everyone a happy Purim,
B’Shalom,
Vanessa

SPOTLIGHT: Laurie Schneider
~ written by Keri Gee Semmelman
When you ask people the question, “What’s your earliest
Jewish experience?” the answers will of course be varied.
For Laurie Schneider, it was as a young toddler sitting in a
balcony next to her mom, grandmother, and aunt with all
the men, including her brother, sitting down below at the
Orthodox synagogue where her Hungarian grandparents
belonged. When it came time for Laurie to begin preparing
for her Bat Mitzvah, her parents switched to a Conservative
synagogue. By 1976 as a young adult, Laurie became
member of our Reform synagogue. Raised in Fairfield,
Connecticut, in a community nearly 40 percent Jewish, she
was always involved in synagogue life just like her parents
and grandparents had been. Every Jewish holiday was
cause for family gatherings. The Jewish Community Center
(JCC) was central to her social life… she was even a
cheerleader for their basketball team!
Laurie earned her undergraduate degree in elementary
education. For grad school she attended University of
Southern California (USC) and has lived here ever since.
Her Masters Degree in special education led to a successful
34 year teaching career. After grad school, Laurie began
dating a Catholic man named Charlie. Yet the question,
“How are we going to raise our children…Jewish or
Catholic?” perplexed them both so they stopped dating.
Looking for a deep connection with other Jews, Laurie
called Temple Beth David to see if there was a singles’
group. Fay Newman, of blessed memory, who led the
choir said, “No, but we have a choir.” Laurie replied, “But I
can’t sing.” Fay invited her to come to services and so she
did. Upon meeting Laurie, Fay warmly said, “I saw you
singing!” Laurie felt so warmly welcomed, she joined the
choir (and Temple) and has been singing the prayers and
enjoying the congregants ever since.
One day Charlie said some words that changed Laurie’s life
forever: “You can raise the kids Jewish and I will be
supportive of this.” They soon wed, found harmony in each
observing their own faiths, and had two wonderful children
who were named, Bar/Bat Mitzvahed, and Confirmed at
Temple Beth David. Charlie, a telecommunications
engineer, went to church every Sunday yet also attended
the temple regularly (monthly family class, family Shabbat
services, High Holy Days). Laurie and Charlie lived a
beautiful life together until he passed without warning in
2009. Her family and her temple family helped her endure
the devastating shock, for which she is forever grateful.
Her daughter Tracy is also a Temple Beth David member
and works as community relations and player program
coordinator for the LA Clippers basketball team. Andrew is
married and pursuing an MBA while working as a pricing
analyst for government
contracts in Virginia.
A born leader, Laurie served
actively on the temple’s
building expansion committee
that saw to it the sanctuary,
lobby, and gift shop would be
built. To help raise funds for
the visionary project, she and
her husband volunteered for
the temple’s community bingo
night. She’s served as
Sisterhood’s religious
practices chair, donor chair,
and in charge of invitations.
Deservingly, Sisterhood
bestowed upon her the
Woman of Merit in 2005. On
the Temple Board she’s been VP/Membership,
VP/Education, and Choir President. Now she’s busy co-
chairing the April 26th “Dinner with Strangers, Dessert with
Friends” member event.
Laurie appreciates how unpretentious Temple Beth David
is. In addition to loving the diversity of ages, ethnicities,
and backgrounds, she says, “It doesn’t matter how much
you have or how you dress…we just care about people as
people.”
In her free time, Laurie loves to line-dance, play tennis,
knit, travel, read novels, and spend time with her family.
From her grandma who lived to 103, Laurie learned how to
(and loves to) garden and bake. She volunteers as a Court
Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) helping foster
children, serves as a reading partner in classrooms, knits
with Mitzvah Mavens, and last year joined the Board of
Women’s Philanthropy of the Jewish Federation and
Family Services of Orange County. She also enjoys her
temple Chavurah the MT Nesters.
Looking back, she advises not to put off things you want to
do and to not let little things upset you. These are such
important words of wisdom from a person who gives so
much of herself to Temple Beth David.

CHAVURAH SPOTLIGHT
~ written by Keri Gee Semmelman
This month we feature the MT Nesters Chavurah that began in 2011. The group meets monthly and is open to having a few more temple members join them. They’ve enjoyed going together to the movies, theater, and museums, and also having potluck dinners, Chanukah celebrations, second day Rosh Hashanah, and attending Temple events together. The group is primarily social...they are the MT Nesters after all, and they also enjoy exploring Jewish related topics. Current members include: Herb & Lois Abrams, David & Trina Gaynon, Alma Herman, Jan Klein, Laurie Schneider, Charlie & Cathy Niederman, Ed Lindell, and Shel & Marcia Rosenzweig.
What is a Chavurah?
One of the many benefits of Temple membership is to be part of a Chavurah — a group of usually about 8 to 20 people with similar backgrounds or interests.
The group defines its own schedule most gather once a month and enjoy all kinds of festivities. Some are purely social while others also delve into Jewish topics for shared learning. It's a special way to make lifelong friends.
We will soon begin a couple of new Chavurahs. If you’ve filled out the interest form, we’ll be in touch with you very soon.
For others interested in being in a Chavurah, please let Membership Committee Member Claudia Geller know by emailing her at [email protected] or filling out the
Chavurah Interest Form.
“In our Chavurah we have formed closer bonds with people who we had previously known only superficially. We enjoy having events to look forward to with friends.” ~ Laurie Schneider, Alma Herman
ARZA By Charlie Niederman
Association of Reform Zionists of America
Looking at the news from Israel there once again
is little to report on the peace process. The cause
of religious equality was not as quiet as the
negotiations of an egalitarian place to pray at the
Western Wall took an unexpected turn. Haaretz
Newspaper reported that the Israeli government
tentatively agreed to a deal that puts a right-wing
organization in charge of the Robinson’s Arch
area of the Western Wall. Under the draft
agreement, the government transfers control of the
Jerusalem Archaeological Park and Davidson
Center to the City of David Foundation. The
foundation runs the City of David tourist site in
Jerusalem’s Old City and works to settle Jews in
Silwan, a mostly Palestinian village in eastern
Jerusalem. The area to be transferred includes
Robinson’s Arch, a section of the Western Wall
just south of the Western Wall Plaza designated
for non-Orthodox prayer.
Israel’s Reform and Conservative movements,
along with the women’s prayer group Women of
the Wall, are negotiating with the government to
expand the plaza’s prayer space. The expansion is
meant as a compromise to interdenominational
conflict at the wall. The decision came as a
surprise to these non-Orthodox groups. The CEO
of Israel's Conservative movement said, “We were
negotiating the final details of how it would be
managed. It was never mentioned that the City of
David Foundation would be the one to actually
run the place.” He said that the movements do not
take a stance on the foundation’s political
leanings, but that if implemented, the draft
agreement would depart from a compromise on
the Western Wall requested by Prime Minister
Netanyahu and outlined by Jewish Agency for
Israel Chairman Natan Sharansky last year.
Sharansky’s outline proposed creating a pluralist
council to manage the site.
On a more local note, the trip that Rabbi Myers
has planned will be leaving for Israel on March 20
and Cathy and I will be part of the group. The
group will have a chance to see the area in
question and some in the group may be interested
in the actions of the Women of the Wall at their
prayer area and the Israel Religious Action
Center's effort to make sure that women are not
confined to sitting in the rear of public busses.
Last month's article covered the mission of ARZA
in supporting our Reform movement in Israel.
Rabbi Myers is in discussion with Professor
David Barzali, of UC San Diego who is the West
Coast Regional Director of ARZA. Tentatively he
is scheduled to speak at our Shabbat service on
April 11. It should be confirmed shortly and more
information will follow.

Celebrating Temple Beth David Membership -by Keri Gee Semmelman, VP-Membership
A Member’s Memorable Moment of the Month…
I’m torn between two moments...Gabriel Myers Prunty’s Bat Mitzvah when she, wise and poised beyond her years, shared with us the lessons she learned from the Torah portion ...and when our committee’s two youth members Justine Krieger and McKenzie Pantel orchestrated the Kid Korner for the “America the Jewiful” Feb. 21st Synaplex that included Justine teaching kids a song she wrote about temple and McKenzie over-seeing the craft activity. At Gabriel’s Bat Mitzvah the congregation beamed with joy knowing she is such a beautiful part of the next generation of Jews! And, for the Synaplex, to the adults delight, the youth paraded into the social hall singing the song and waiving artwork. Hearing my daughter loudly yell “Yay!” at the end of the parade summed it up. Temple Beth David is a place where so many people have fun and enjoy one another! The Song Lyrics: “Oh Jewiful, at Synaplex, We’re learning about Presidents. For coming to Friday services and using the prayer books. Oh Jewiful, Oh Jewiful. Put some lox on that bagel. So many Jews across the U. We Jews sure love to schmooze!” (Great job Justine!)
MEMBER EVENT...a wonderful benefit of membership!
Dinner with Strangers, Dessert with Friends Saturday, April 26, 5:30 p.m.—10 p.m.
A special thank you to Linda Krieger and Laurie Schneider for co-chairing this effort! On Saturday evening, April 26, all adult congregants will have the opportunity to get to know one another during dinners at the homes of fellow congregants. The host will provide the main course with guests only needing to bring a side dish or drinks. We’ll divide up congregants (couples will remain together, of course!) to help you meet as many new people as possible. Following, dinner attendees will join together at temple for Havdalah, desserts, and entertainment. (By dessert, you’ll definitely know more people!) We thankfully have 5 host homes. Based on how many congregants wish to attend, we may need more so let us know if you’d be willing to host. To attend, please RSVP by March 21—Temple Office (714)892-6623 or to [email protected] (that’s the #1 not an “L”). Be sure to provide first/last name(s) of attendees. By early April, you will receive confirmation of what host home will be warmly welcoming you and additional information.

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR
PROGRAM COMMITTEE
America the Jewiful was a wonderful success. Thank you to everyone
who contributed to that success. George Washington aka
Rev. Gary Beard, really made one think he was George Washington.
Don Schwartz’s presentation about American presidents and the Jews
had the congregants silent.
The full shul joined with the Girl Scout Colored guard. presented by
Sarah and Rachel Baroway and their friend, by leading us in The Pledge
of Allegiance. Thank you also to the Membership Committee for
planning and coordinating the Kid’s Korner to add even more fun for
the kids. The Cantor’s sing-alongs were a lot of fun. Her ending song,
“Change Begins With You and Me” sent a clear and spiritual message
about how we can follow the Golden Rule and “do unto others as you
wish others would do unto you.”
This will be seen as more partners join the temple in making
Westminster a City of Compassion. The Hope Lutheran Church is our
first partner in this international program. Huntington Beach recently
signed on as a City of Compassion. Westminster will be next with a
little help from friends throughout the city.

at temple during the last year.
Come to the office and look through the green
basket sitting on the counter. If you find
yourself in it, the picture(s) is/are yours!
