ADVENTURE PARK NOW OPEN
SUMMER FUN IN KWINANA
DECEMBER 2016OF KWINANA
Summer’s finally here and I’m sure we’re all counting down the days until Christmas – a time for festivities for many and the opportunity to spend time with your loved ones, enjoying all the City has to offer.
One of the facilities we predict will get a lot of use over the summer time is of course the new Adventure Park, which opened to huge celebrations in late October. Since then, we’ve seen thousands of people go through the gates and enjoy all the park has to offer. From slides to swings, flying fox to the splash pad, there really is something for every family member to enjoy. If you haven’t yet visited Perth’s number one nature play park, I highly recommend you check it out soon and see for yourself what the hype is about. All the details about our new park – party bookings, FAQs and attraction info – are on our website.
We’ve also had a string of events recently, including the Alcoa Children’s Party, which was once again a huge hit, the Kwinana Recquatic Open Day, the Medina Revitalisation Project Community Launch and of course the iconic LiveLighter Festival Fair Day, which returned to its home on Calista Oval again this year. Make sure you come along to the upcoming Outdoor Cinema Series in Chisham Square. We’ll be hosting a range of popular family-friendly movies across the summer months and next up is The Grinch. Of course there will also be a range of activities across the school holidays to keep the little ones entertained, so don’t forget to check the City’s Facebook page for details of summer events.
Please note the City’s facilities will run on reduced hours over the Christmas period – outlined on the back page of the Spirit. We’ll return to business as usual in the New Year.
On behalf of the Councillors and staff at the City of Kwinana, I wish you all a safe, happy and healthy Christmas and New Year.
Carol Adams Mayor
A total fire ban is in place in the City from 1 December to 31 March due to potentially extreme weather conditions. This ban prevents the lighting of any fires in the open air and any other activities that may start a fire, including incinerators, welding, grinding, soldering or gas cutting.
Last year both career and volunteer fire services attended to more than 500 ‘000’ calls for help from within the City of Kwinana. The bushfire season is always a busy period for the City’s two volunteer bushfire brigades - Kwinana South and Mandogalup - with most of their call outs occurring during this period.
Preparation
If you haven’t prepared your property, now is the time.
In accordance with the City’s Fire Break notice, fire breaks must be installed and maintained from 1 December up to and including 31 March. Steps include:
• creating a 20-metre building protection zone around your property that includes clearing the area of rubbish, long grass and other materials that could catch fire;
• protecting your house from ember attack by fitting wire screens and shutters;
• blocking any gaps under the floor, roof, eaves, external vents, skylights, chimneys and wall cladding;
• having an emergency water supply that is independent of mains water supply; and
• discussing fire prevention and preparedness with your family and neighbours.
For more information about bushfire safety, visit dfes.wa.gov.au or the Department of Fire and Emergency Services’ new emergency alert website – emergency.wa.gov.au. If you suspect someone of bushfire arson, call Crime Stoppers confidentially on 1800 333 000 and if you witness suspicious behaviour, call 000.

Word is getting out regarding Medina’s hidden gem, the Green Barista.
The Green Barista Café is located at 19 Pace Road Medina and has been serving up made-to-order fresh meals for six months.
The Café is owned by proprietors Mira and Alex who are originally from Southern Europe. The Green Barista specialises in providing fresh, delicious and beautifully presented food with a distinctly Mediterranean flair, as well as one of Kwinana’s best take away coffees.
The menu is always made to order and constantly changes so if you’ve not stopped by in while, it could be worth a second visit.
Customers are helping spread the word with recommendations such as: ‘The Green Barista is the type of little quirky coffee shop with homemade goodies you’d expect to find in Freo’.
The café serves up a delicious menu of both dine-in and take-away breakfast and lunch options.
Mira and Alex can also cater for functions of one to 100 people and welcome the opportunity to serve up their delicious food at upcoming holiday parties.

CHICAGO – live at Koorliny Arts CentreBased on true crimes in 1920s prohibition-era Chicago, CHICAGO is the longest running American musical ever to play in both Broadway and the West End. Focussing on the concept of the ‘celebrity criminal’, CHICAGO is a scathing satire of how the media and show business can glamourise crime and corruption, and how easily murder can turn into popular entertainment.
CHICAGO will razzle dazzle Koorliny Arts Centre in February 2017. See koorliny.com.au for full details of this and other shows in the New Year.

Beach Wheelchair Available For Hire
The City of Kwinana’s beach wheelchair is an amphibious rolling beach chair that provides a seamless transition from boardwalk to beach to water.
The chair’s rubber tyres ensure a comfortable ride as they absorb the shock transition with rugged terrain. The armrests and wheels are made of floatation materials that assist with balance in the water.
Together with mobi-matting laid along Kwinana Beach in the months of November through to the end of March, residents can benefit from the chairs portability and comfort.
Interested in hiring?
The beach wheelchair is located at Wells Park, Kwinana Beach. To access the chair, a booking is required and keys need to be collected from the Kwinana Recquatic Centre. The beach wheelchair is free to hire, but a $50 bond is required at the time of key collection. Only bookings on the day will be taken.
For further information regarding the chair, contact our Bookings Officer on 9439 0407 (Monday to Friday) or 9236 4700 (Saturday and Sunday).
Is Your Pet Microchipped and Registered
If you’re a cat or dog owner, it’s a requirement they are registered with your local council and in order to be registered, they must be microchipped.
Owners who currently have pets that aren’t microchipped will be required to rectify this.
The City of Kwinana will be sending out reminders to owners in the coming months. Remember, you can now renew your pet registration online at www.kwinana.wa.gov.au.
