Mitigation of risks on FANS interoperability
March 17th, 2016Seminar on Data Link Communications - Recife City, Brazil, from 16 to 18 March, 2016
• FANS interoperability risks are managed by Airbus through
• Full compliance of the Airbus FANS products to applicable standards
• Delivery of mature certified AIRBUS FANS products
• Thoroughly verified at Airbus test lab, during Airbus flight tests, in interoperation
with many ANSPs
• FANS A (then A+) first certified in year 2000 on A330/A340 , has benefited from a
long exposure time, on a large and worldwide population of Airbus customers
Aircraft
• In Service Problems have been (and continue to be) monitored, analysed, and
fixed by new product releases for defects found on Airbus airborne systems
implementation
• Proactive interoperability tests campaigns with many ground ATC Centers are
performed by Airbus in the scope of the certification of any new product
release
• Airbus positively answers to all requests from ground ATC Centers, to perform
interoperability tests with Airbus FANS products (see next slide)
• Airbus FANS products particularities are documented in ICAO GOLD

How to organize interoperability tests with Airbus ?
• Send an e-mail to contact person:
• Interoperability tests can cover:
• A623, CPDLC, and ADS-C applications
• With A/G traffic exchanged through
ARINC or SITA
• An Interoperability tests campaign
generally implies:
• Some teleconferences to agree on tests
dates, and tests scope
• Exchange of tests procedures documents
through e-mail
• Tests execution session (generally over a
half day)
• A teleconference for debriefing on the
tests results

AIRBUS advices to FANS ground implementation initiatives
• Ground implementations must comply to the applicable standards
• Use the ICAO GOLD to avoid possible misinterpretations of the applicable
standards
• Use the ICAO GOLD to get knowledge of recommended implementations or
procedures, which take consideration of particular Airborne implementation
specificities or limitations
• Setup interoperability tests campaigns with AIRBUS laboratory (see
previous slide)
• Setup large scale trials with multiple partner Airlines for pre-operational
validation of the datalink services
• Use CRA database (www.ispacg-cra.com) to report abnormal events and
trigger analysis by AIRBUS FANS experts
• Participate to FIT meetings, to share experiences with other organisations
and get awareness on reported issues and resolution status
