Akbar takes dig at Sino-Pak friendshipNEW DELHI, Dec 9:

In a veiled dig at Sino-Pakistan friendship, Minister ofState for External Affairs M JAkbar today said a "mature"friend is far more valuable thana "hysterical" partner.

Addressing the first India-China think-tank forum here,Akbar also said the time hascome for India and China toregain the reputation of being aglobal manufacturing hub. Hereferred to the past when Indiaaccounted for 24 per cent of theglobal manufacturing output andChina 30 per cent.

"There cannot be any situa-tion in which two nations do nothave some differences. Ofcourse, there will be some butmature nations can take theirproblems to a decent space of adialogue table.

"A mature friend is far, farmore valuable than a hystericalpartner," Akbar said at the inau-guration of the two-day forum. His remarks appeared an indi-rect message to China whichdescribes Pakistan as a "allweather ally" and has strong

defence and trade ties with it.In the backdrop of the sever-

al terror strikes carried out inIndia by Pakistan-based groups,Akbar said dangers from terror-ism are not limited to the factthat it kills people but also in itsuse of fear to divide people, especially in societies andnations which are built on plu-ralism.

He warned that complacencewas absolutely the "biggest dan-ger" while dealing with newrealities posed by terrorism.

Commenting on the currentsituation in the region, the Ministersaid, "Peace is sometimes moredifficult to find than war."

He also said in the postBritish empire era, both Indiaand China agreed that religioncannot be the basis of national-ism.

"In the (Indian) sub-conti-nent this idea was challenged byvotaries of the Muslim League, who argued that religion couldbe basis of nation state. Parallelstory that religion on which theywanted nation state, Islam, thereis no history of Islam being basisof political unity," he said. (PTI)
