TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
By the year 800, when anointing was defined as the proper
office of priests, very complicated rituals began to take shape.
Perhaps this was to reassure the laity, who had memories of an
earlier practice, that the new way was not only better, but impos-
sible for a layperson to conduct. Blessings and sprinkling of holy
water, the singing of as many as seven psalms, penance, anoint-
ing of all the senses, viaticum, all capped off by the clothing of
the sick person in penitential garments, were part of the rite.
This proved unwieldy, and creative spirits got to work. By the
1500s people made distinctions between visiting the sick,
anointing, and viaticum.
The attempt of the Church to be faithful to the image of a
healing Christ has some complicated history, including centuries
when the celebration was rare. Most sick people had no access to
the rites at all; only monastics or the well‑off had much hope of
this care. Today, those unhappy days are long behind us, and the
care of the sick is an essential task in every parish’s life. As
Christmas approaches almost everyone comes in contact with
someone who is a candidate for pastoral care. You live out the
best of our tradition when you arrange for a sick person to re-
ceive Holy Communion or the sacrament of the sick and the
consolation of regular contact with the faith community.

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process through which adults seeking full communion in the Catholic Church are gradually introduced to the Ro-man Catholic faith and way of life. My Beloved Brothers and Sisters,
BLESSING & DEDICATION OF ARTWORK ON FEAST OF EPIPHANY Our parishioner, artist Catherine Whiteswan, has completed a beautiful painting of Jesus and the Sa-
maritan Woman at the Well. The painting will be blessed and dedicated on Sunday, January 4, 2015, at
the 8:30 a.m. Mass, the Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord. It will be placed permanently in the Recon-
ciliation Room. The story of the Samaritan Woman is a story of a great awakening and manifestation
of Jesus to the woman and to all mankind. The Epiphany is a day of manifesting/showing forth Christ
to the world. We welcome this special work of art which will be an inspiration and work of evangeliza-
tion for all in our parish.
WORLD YOUTH DAY - POLAND 2016 World Youth Day will take place in Krakow, Poland in July 2016 with Pope Francis and youth from all
over the world. For the first time since it began, All Saints will be sending four young adults to repre-
sent our parish at this extraordinary event of faith. World Youth Day began with St. John Paul II as an
expression of his love and his confidence in the faith of Catholic youth in the Church. The last World
Youth Day was held in Rio de Janiero, Brazil in July, 2013 with an estimated 3 million youth attending the closing Mass with Pope
Francis. On that occasion he said to them:
"You too, dear young people, can be joyful witnesses of his love, courageous witnesses of his Gospel, carrying to this world a ray of
his light.”
Pope Francis at World Youth Day, July 25, 2013
During this blessed and holy season, the staff, our deacons and I wish all of you a happy and joyful Christmas celebration. May it
bring peace and renewed hope into your lives and the lives of your loved ones.
Merry Christmas,
Msgr. Adam

Formation Classes for children and youth begin Christmas Holidays on Dec. 18. Classes will resume on January 6 in the public
schools and Jan. 11 on the church campus. Renew your life in Christ during this holy season.
Religious Formation registration remains open all year. Give your child or the child of someone you know the gift that lasts for
eternity – a formation in our Christian faith. Forms can be found in the foyer of the church or you may register electronically on the
parish website. Also, we take registration at class times on Sunday and Wednesdays as well as at the public schools. We are a par-
ish that believes in reaching out to share the faith with all.
Thank you to the parish for the help in the formation for our children, youth and adults through the special collection on Nov.
22/23. The donation came to $2,000. We also shared 400 Spiritual books with many in our distribution after the masses on that
weekend. We hope you took one and are enjoying it. We will announce where further books can be had in January. There will be
discussions on some of these books in the New Year. Follow the schedule which will appear in the bulletin. Please continue your
generosity in support of efforts to share the faith.
Bible Study during the Christmas holidays beginning on Dec. 20 through Jan. 4 will be discontinued. We’ll pick up again on

Gracias a la parroquia por su apoyo en la formación de nuestros niños, jóvenes y adultos, por medio de una Feria de Libros Espir-

ECHOING MARY’S DECISION
The angel Gabriel today confronts Mary with a mys-
tery. The mystery of salvation in Christ is not a mystery
that is solved, but a reality beyond our comprehension that
we must choose to enter into. In the liturgy of the Eastern
Church, everyone waits to see if Mary will enter into the
mystery: God waits, Adam and Eve and all the souls of the
dead who long for paradise wait, angels wait for new heav-
enly companions. And there is much rejoicing when her
decision is “yes.”
We have less dramatic choices offered to us, but the
mystery of our salvation in Christ is by no means “solved.”
We may understand it a bit better due to Mary’s “yes.” We
may be a bit closer to it through the passion, death, and res-
urrection of Jesus Christ. But it still remains a mystery to
which we all must give our own “yes.” Soon we will be
singing “O come, let us adore him.” May our Advent pray-
er, our echo of Mary’s “yes,” continue then, so we may en-
ter into the mystery of our salvation in Jesus Christ, God
among us.
