History
• Institute of Water Administration commenced 1967– Water & Sewerage Trust secretaries in Gippsland– Sharing ideas and experience
• IWA becomes State Wide in 1970’s– Developing skills and networks
• Water sector rationalisation in 1980’s and ‘90’s– Reduced membership and attendance
• Strategic review in 1997– Birth of the Special Interest Groups

Vision & Purpose
• VISION: – To be recognised by the water industry in Victoria as the key
forum for sharing information, networking and learning for executive management and business professionals.
• PURPOSE: – IWA exists to provide a forum for sharing information,
networking and professional development in the Victorian water industry.
– IWA specifically targets our offerings to executive management and professionals managing business related functions within Victorian Water Corporations.

Core “products” of the IWA
Focused on professional development of individuals and fostering collaboration, based on 3 events pa with 3 elements:
1. Special Interest Group (SIG) sessions bringing together people from similar functional backgrounds and responsibilities to share their experience and learn from each other
2. Conference dinners providing a networking opportunity for SIG members to join with Senior Managers and Board members from across the Victorian water industry
3. Strategic conferences focussing on contemporary themes for the industry, generally pitched at the level of Senior Manager/Board level.
PLUS Professional Development Awards (Laurie Gleeson Award) , Awards recognising distinguished service and occasional Study Tours

Membership
• 30 Corporate– All water utilities in Victoria are Corporate Members
• their fee is higher than other corporate members (e.g. consultants) as fees subsidise SIG attendees.
• Membership structure allows SIGS to exclude consultants when appropriate (i.e. based on issues being discussed)
• 110 individuals• Categories:– Corporate, Member, Associate, Fellow, Life Member
