Porphyrins are light sensitive pigments, distributed throughout our cells.Surrounded by water (in nature), they are good semi-conductors.These molecules coordinate electronic processes in living tissue.Pigments absorb energy; fluorescent pigments also transmit.Their ionization potential is low; they are ideal pacers of electron transport. When their function is incomplete or reduced, energy drops, activity slows.Injured by toxic insults, they increase sensitivity to further toxins, EMF.In the nervous system, the porphyrins are in myelin-containing glial cells. In blood, heme is contained in cytochrome oxidase, required for oxygen use.

"[Porphyrins] are the very special molecules that interface between oxygen and life. They are responsible for the creation, maintenance, and recycling of all of the oxygen in our atmosphere: they make possible the release of oxygen from carbon dioxide by plants, the extraction of oxygen back out of the air by both plants and animals, and the use of that oxygen by living things to burn carbohydrates, fats and proteins for energy." Arthur Firstenberg

Porphyrins are made as heme is synthesized in a precise 8-step pathway. Any disruption to or imbalance in the enzyme steps may permit a build-up of porphyrins and metabolites, causing a reduction of pigment synthesis or function. The enzymes are sensitive to environmental pollutants and EMF.

exposure to toxins... disrupts the porphyrin pathway, causing the accumulation of more porphyrins and their precursors, rendering the myelin and the nerves they surround... sensitive to EMFs."

"COX is the only enzyme to transport electrons to oxygen to produce H2O and ATP. It is believed that 90% of intracellular molecular oxygen is utilized by COX... Certain doses of MW radiation negatively impact the activity of COX."
