We do not consider identifications done under1.foray conditions incontrovertible. All are open toa variable, small but real margin of error. Theyare also subject to changes brought about by newinformation. These notations attest to that. In manycases identifiers indicate some degree of uncertain-ty by the use of qualifiers such as Lactarius sor-didus., cf., coll., complex, group, sl. and the like.These qualifiers are retained in the raw data andthe original cards are kept, all as evidence aboutthe identifier’s assessment of certainty. However,these qualifiers are omitted on the published listfor ease of reading. Our raw data is available forreview. This list may err by commission or omis-sion. Where there is a choice, our preference hasbeen to err on the side of omission, ie we prefer toleave out a species that may be here over claimingone exists that does not live here.
2. Amanita bisporigera. Includes specimens identi-fied as Amanita virosa. According to Amanitaexpert Rod Tulloss, one of our guest faculty forfour forays, DNA testing has revealed that Amani-ta virosa is an European species that does not fruithere. Rod is of the opinion that the same specieshas both a two-spored and four-spored form, de-pending on the season and its stage of maturity.
3. Amanita sp. (“Killdevil amanita”). Identified byRod Tulloss as a hitherto undescribed species,initially given the code name “NFL07”, but pro-visionally renamed by him after Killdevil Lodge,where our forays took place when this species wasfound. Discussed and illustrated in Voitk: A littleillustrated book of common mushrooms of New-foundland and Labrador.
4. Microscopic distiction between C. aeruginascensand C. aeruginosa made first in 2008. Earlier re-ports may have contained both under one name.
5. Hitherto undescribed species, according toMachiel Noordeloos. “Dune entoloma” will bechanged to proper binomial if studies confirmMachiel’s opinion and he formally describes itwith new name. We look forward to using its newname soon; meanwhile we refer to it as “Entolomasp.” or use the nickname, given because it wasfound in sand dunes.
6. Our concept of P. varius is that it encompasses P.elegans and is synonymous with P. leptocephalus.

Wehope that this and other similarly treated specieswill be described by their discoverers in a timelyfashion, so that the whole world can enjoy use ofthese new names for these new species withoutfeeling conscience stricken as a sinner againstgood taxonomic practice.
We have not been entirely convinced that we have8.found more than one species of slimy larch Suillus(the former Fuscoboletinus), whether pale green-ish grey (which often has been called S. aerugi-nascens elsewhere) or deep russet brown (whichcertainly fits S. serotinus). Since S. aeruginascens= S. viscidus = S. laricinus (all based on Europeantypes), and S. serotinus is a North American namefor a taxon in the same complex, we have fol-lowed the approach of Le cercle des mycologuesde Montréal by considering all four taxa synony-mous until further work is done to elucidate theirinterrelationship, if any. We shall keep track of theoriginal identifications, so that should the speciesbe considered separate, the identifiers' determina-tion can be noted.
9. Because DNA has shown them to be synonymous,species identified as Galerina autumnalis havebeen changed to G. marginata; this epithet coversboth identifications.
10. Hydnellum peckii and H. diabolus. All our col-lections came from the same trails in 2003, 2004,2005. They were identified as H. peckii in 2003and 2005 but in 2004 were identified as H. di-abolus by an identifier, who felt the two were notsynonymous. Because we have at no time identi-
fied both, to show we can differentiate betweenthem, because they are considered synonymousby Index Fungorum and many other authors andbecause the majority of identifiers side with H.peckii, we have arbitrarily reclassified them assuch. With this comment we acknowledge the pos-sibility that they may be distinct and our H. peckiimay contain some or all H. diabolus. Until betterclarification, we shall keep them as is for the sakeof ease, since all but one identifier is in agreement,but shall be glad to reclassify them in the face ofbetter evidence than we have at present.
11. Hypholoma elongatum contains specimens identi-fied as H. elongatipes because they are synony-mized in Nordic Macromycetes.
12. According to Jorinde Nuytinck, Lactarius delicio-sus is a European species that is not found here. L.deterrimus is also a European species; erroneouslyone or more similar species have been called L. de-terrimus or L. deliciosus var. deterrimus in NorthAmerica. In 2007 Jorinde did genetic studies on allcollections from my (av) private collection, col-lected all over the island. Only two species wereidentified: L. thyinos and L. “deterrimus”. Thesewere the only species identified 2006 and 2007.2003-2005 forays identified L. deliciosus; althoughincorrect, this is allowed to stand, as we lack suf-ficient evidence to make accurate retrospectivecorrections. L. “deterrimus” has not been renamedbecause work is still being done to see whether thisrepresents one or more species. Until then we’lluse the epithet, full well knowing it to be incorrect.For the sake of ease of reading, we have elected toomit the quotation marks and retain the italics inthe list, but note the problems here.
13. 2003-2006 we have only recorded Leotia lubricaand L. viscosa, often including with the formermushrooms with some olive to greenish tone oncap ± stem. Some authors have considered allin-between shades as L. atrovirens, while othersreserve this epithet only for mushrooms that areevenly dusky green. We intended to examine thisin closer detail in 2007. However, at that timewe learned of the report by Rogerson and Samu-els, suggesting the dusky green variety may be aparasite, Hypomyces leotiicola, on L. lubrica. Wedid identify such parasitized fungi in 2007 and re-corded the parasite. Further reading after the foraysuggests that there may also be at least one, if notmore, species of all-green leotias, unrelated to any
parasite. They are described as having gel in theouter layer of the stem. Since we did not examinefor that among our foray material, we are unable tomake an identification of L. atrovirens for 2007 orearlier.
14. Identifications of Atheniella / Mycena amabilis-sima have been included with A. adonis. Althoughnot all authors synonymize the two, we have beenunable to define meaningful differences betweenthe two identifications. We suspect this is correctbut accept that we may hide two species underone name and are prepared to reconsider, if newevidence comes to light.
15. Cystoderma amianthinum var. amianthinum andC. amianthinum var. rugosoreticulatum are indis-tinguishable genetically. Cap wrinkling is likely afactor of age and environmental conditions. As aresult, we no longer record the distinction.
16. All identifications of Stropharia semiglobata from2003 have been renamed S. alcis. Once aware ofthe difference in 2004, we checked spore size ofour collections: all fit with S. alcis. Subsequentlywe have checked a few specimens randomly andbased on this, have found only S. alcis in ourwoods—until 2010, when another “routine” checkuncovered one S. arctica and four S. alcis. FindingS. arctica on the Great Northern Peninsula and notelsewhere (so far) suggests this is a northern spe-cies (as its name suggests) and we may encountermore there as well as in Labrador. The specimenwas young and grew on moose dung. Although itsstem was considerably shorter than that of S. alcis,in proportion to the cap diameter, that may be dueto immaturity, not a morphologic feature of thisspecies.
17. Initially we considered the dark red-brown andthe yellow version as synonyms of Suillus grevil-lei. In 2007 we were shown that these have beenofficially separated as distinct species in Scandi-navia, reserving S. grevillei for the yellow version,common there, as originally described. The darkred-brown version is known as S. clintonianus,as described by Peck for the version most com-monly encountered in North America. Since thisis a North American name and since there is atleast geographic, if not ecologic, difference be-tween the two, we elected to separate them intothose two species in 2007. An attempt to “correct”our records retroactively met with the usual dif-ficulty: not every collection of this very common
mushroom was photographed or dried. Therefore,we elected to let identifications before 2007 standas made, with this note as qualifier. A rough esti-mate is that about one-third of specimens broughtin were yellow (S. grevillei). This is higher thantheir relative distribution in our woods but it seemsforagers are more prone to bring in a more unusualspecimen. Parenthetically, it is my (av) guess thatDNA will eventually show them to be synony-mous and that the difference is due to a minortypographic error in the gene controlling red-brown pigment. I suspect that the yellow version(flavino?) is no more a different species than analbino in other organisms. However, until this hasbeen shown or disproven, since there is a NorthAmerican name for a North American mushroom,it seems more correct taxonomically to treat themas separate. Lumping later is no problem.
18. All identifications of Boletus/Boletellus/Xeroco-mus tomentosus/subtomentosus have been changedto Boletus gracilis. Andy Taylor found that speci-mens of all foray material and my (av) private col-lections, from all over the island and the southerncoast of Labrador, mapped out with X. gracilis. Onthis basis it seemed most accurate to consider thisour only representative of this species complex.
19. These are species identified by Rod Tulloss ashitherto undescribed. Tulloss’s initial code nu-merics have been used for identification. Tullossspent four forays with us and as a result createda picture-book of Amanita species in Newfound-land and Labrador on his website < http://pluto.njcc.com/~ret/amanita/mainaman.html>. Thesespecies are undergoing more study and some maybe withdrawn as new, while others may end upsynonymized. Once reported in the literature, weshall uncode them and identify them accordingly.Keeping the code name in the meantime allows usto track them through this process. As seen on hisweb site, Tulloss feels there are even more unde-scribed spp. in our province.
20. This may be a misidentification. While we haveconfirmed (collections outside our forays) that A.groenlandica does indeed grow in our province,Tulloss now feels this species is not it and prob-ably represents another member of the A. fulva-A.vaginata complex. Please see Tulloss’s website forfurther details.
21. We have decided to follow the genetic studies ofden Bakker et al., considering all reddish-capped
leccinums growing in conifer woods as L. vulpi-num in the broad sense (s.l.). Thus, this epithetlumps together determinations L. piceinum fromconifer woods as well as L. atrostipitatum, L.aurantiacum and L. versipelle from primarilyconiferous mixed woods. We recognize that denBakker’s experience with North American lec-cinums is not as exhaustive as his experience withEuropean leccinums and species like L. piceinummay prove to be good. Where originally identifiedas such, those changes can be reverted. We alsorecognize that L. atrostipitatum, L. aurantiacumand L. versipelle from primarily coniferous mixedwoods may have been birch associates (a fewbirch being the only significant deciduous tree inthese woods), but since the woods are primarilyconiferous and since we have not seen reddish-capped leccinums in pure birch woods, we feel thislumping may be more accurate at this stage of ourknowledge. In this, we agree with Kuo that in viewof the confusion of profusion with leccinums, per-haps less is better until a clearer understanding ofwhat we have in North America emerges. Again,should new evidence emerge, the original identifi-cations are on record and can be changed back, asindicated.We did not follow the above guidelines in the caseof two collections from Battle Harbour, Labrador.Both were made from barrens, with only dwarftrees. Only dwarf birch was seen around them,with no conifers nearby. These have been listed asidentified, L. versipelle. Other collections identifiedas L. versipelle and L. atrostipitatum from Labra-dor, but coming from primarily coniferous mixedwoods, even if a birch was noted in the vicinity,have been listed for the moment as L. lupinum, forthe reasons given above.This is the name of an European mushroom, which22.reputedly does not grow in North America. Thespecies found here is closest to the European spe-cies by gross morphology. Not examined micro-scopically. By gross morphology, seems to fit thedescription of “Amanita V3” of Tulloss, a speciesas yet not formally described; Tulloss has alsoreferred to it by a provisional name, “Amanitaborealisorora”; further, it seems to conform to thespecies to which Lamoureux has given a provi-sional name “Amanita rhacopus”, also lacking aformal description to date. Again, we hope thatthis and other similarly treated species will be
described by their discoverers in a timely fashion,so that the whole world can enjoy use of thesenew names for these new species without feelingconscience stricken as a sinner against good taxo-nomic practice.
23. Best fit on gross morphology with Amanita vagi-nata var. alba, although its stem was not quite aslong in proportion to cap diameter as expected anda tiniest tinge of yellow-pink on disc. That speciesis described by Lamoureux as "Amanita albiceps",a name awaiting formal description before cominginto common use. Not examined microscopicallybut photo and voucher specimens available forfurther study.
24. Synonymous with Hirschioporus abietinus.25. G. irrigatus synonymized with G. unguinosus and
contains specimens identified as the latter.26. We likely have the I. lilacina described by Peck,
also known as I. geophylla var. lilacina. Phylogenyshows that it is a good species, not a variety of I.geophylla.
27. In 2008 laccarias keyed out as special project. Vastmajority keyed out as L. bicolor, four L. striatulaand one L. longipes; no L. laccata or L. proxima.In other years field identification primary modeof determining species. We do not know whetherthe difference is due to difference in ecoregion, anunusual year or method of identification.
28. Synonymized with L. niveum. This is the earliername and therefore should have preference. How-ever, there is some uncertainty about the speciesoriginally defined under that epithet. That, plus thefact that L. holopus is entrenched in common us-age, has made us prefer the latter.
29. In 2008, Leccinum snellii was closest fit macro-scopically, but spore size was closer to L. flavostip-itatum, with little overlap; did not have yellowstipe of the latter and did not dry yellow.
30. Primarily differentiated by ecologic habitat. P.rubicundulus identified by growth among alders,with no other trees in neighbourhood; some mor-phological differences from P. involutus noted onmost occasions. P. vernalis identified by growthamong poplars, with no other trees nearby; littleif any morphological difference from P. involu-tus noted. P. involutus considered an associate ofbirch, conifers or mixed forest.
31. Somewhat counterintuitively, we have elected tofollow the ranking of Noordeloos regarding ento-lomas and have dispensed with genera Albolep-
tonia, Leptonia, Nolanea and others, consideringthese and others as subgenera of Genus Entoloma.We have decided to accept all derived genera form32.Hygrocybe proposed by Lodge et al. in 2013, as anexperiment, to see how many will be accepted andbe in current usage over time.
33. We have treated R. persicolor as a probable syn-onym.
34. C. traganus includes specimens identified as C.pyriodorus.
35. We have not found sufficient difference betweenEuropean and North American specimens to sup-port Psathyrella arenulina as a separate taxon.Until a difference is demonstrated, we shall use theolder epithet.
36. Taphrina robinsoniana—causes alder tonguegall in Alnus rugosa. The gall is morphologicallyindistinguishable from that caused in European A.incana (ssp. incana) by T. alni, but apparently thelatter is not a North American species. We haveonly A. (incana ssp.) rugosa and A. (viridis ssp.)crispa on the Island; alder tongue gall is very host-specific and is a parasite of the former only.
37. Northeastern North American relative of theEuropean M. platyphylla, confirmed with nuclearsequencing by Ron Petersen.
38. We have elected to use the name of the Europeanequivalent, pro tem, until evidence appears thatours is a new species. Infudbulicybe maxima,referring to a species of temperate Europe, hasbeen declared a nomen dubium. Harmaja describeda similar species in northern Europe as I. gigas.Because of our northern location we selected thename of the northern species, until ours can bechecked.
39. We did not scrutinize our Lactarius lignyotus indetail, until in 2008, when unexpectedly we sawthat one had turned a startling purple after severalhours on the display table. Subsequent check ofspecimens and past photos has showed that allmembers of this species that we have seen havemarginate gills. This excludes L. lignyotus var.canadensis, the default variety for past collections,where variety has not been noted. All specimenscollected in Newfoundland has stained pink, com-patible with L. lignyotus var. canadensis. Materialin Labrador has stained either pink, or after severalhours a deep purple. The latter is compatible withL. lignyotus var. marginatus. Since these featureshave not been noted in the past, we have not
changed earlier determinations.Since then, we have found afew pink-staining specimenswith totally amarginate gills,keying out to L. lignyotus var.lignyotus. In 2012 we found ourfirst purple staining specimenwith amarginate gills, keyingout to L. lignyotus var. nigrovi-olascens.Before 2010, we have not40.checked these Clavariadelphusspecies too closely routinely,so that pre-2010 C. ligula mayhide C. sachalinensis.
41. Pholiota aurivella and Pholiotalimonella are not distinguishedreliably by macro- or micro-morphologic means. Since theformer is a European speciesand the latter North American,we have elected, much as theQuébec group, to arbitrarily as-sign the North American epithetto all ours, pending furtherinformation.
42. Until the question is resolvedwith genetic marker studies, wehave elected to use the nameTricholoma fulvum. However,we recognize that this may bea purely European taxon, withan as yet undetermined NorthAmerican counterpart. YvesLamoureux and the Québecgroup have suggested Peck’sTricholoma transmutans mightfit best with our collections.Because this may well turn outto be the case, we have electedto leave identifications madeto that species stand, and asYves, consider the two conceptsconspecific in our area. We alsonote the potential confusionbetween this/these species andTricholoma pessundatum.
43. We follow Harrison and con-sider Hydnellum pineticola tobe the North American equiva-
lent of the European H. ferrug-ineum.In Europe a conical dusky44.yellow-green Tricholoma underdeciduous trees is known asT. sejunctum and a similar oneunder conifers as T. viridilute-scens. Our only similar Tricho-loma grows under conifers. Wehave elected to show either ofthe above two identications asT. subsejunctum, a North Amer-ican species described 66 yearsbefore T. viridilutescens, untilevidence suggests a change.
45. Until evidence to suggest thecontrary, we elect to considerAgaricus abruptibulbus as asynonym with A. silvicola.
46. Unpublished data from GhentUniversity shows that our Lac-tarius sordidus differs from theEuropean L. necator/L. turpis,and best fits with L. sordidusPeck.
47. Cuphophyllus borealis is thenortheastern genetic sister to C.virgineus.
48. Includes collections identifiedas Cortinarius integerrimus.
49. Gomphidius borealis is ourcommon species from all overthe province. qwe have onecollection of G. maculatus, andso far G. glutenosus is knownfrom one site only.
50. A poor place to put this one,but since it has no gills, puttingit with Rickenella is not muchbetter, so here it is.
51. Phylogeny shows Femsjoniato clump together as a group,quite remote from Ditiola.
52. European mycologists havesynonymized Tricholomamyomyces and T. terreum—as a species of variable capcolour—on the basis of mor-phologic as well as geneticsimilarity. Because both species
are European, so long as we usethe same names, it seems logi-cal to synonymize them here aswell. In due time we shall learnwhether ours are the same ordifferent, and whether we havemore than one species.Anamorph of the pyrenomy-53.cete, Pseudonectria tilachlidiiGams.
54. This is NOT a lichen! It doesnot form a relationship withalgae or cyanobacteria, butlives on (off?) a lichen, ie, itis lichenocolous. However,this ascomycete belongs in theLecanorales, lichenized asco-mycetes to a man, so to place itelsewhere does not fit.
