career.
A team from Petrocil Engineers and Consultants Pvt Ltd came to our campus to effect exactly
this. A professionally managed multi-dimensional Engineering consultancy with specialists in
Process, Instrumentation, Mechanical, Pipeline, Civil and Electrical disciplines, they were the
obvious choice for such an event. Assistant Professor Jiji K S presided over the programme. The
talk was very informative and it enlightened our students on the plethora of opportunities for
Electrical engineers in the field of Refineries/Petrochemical and other chemical industries.
Electrical engineers always have an important role to play in all stages of an oil refinery plant,
both on shore and off shore. Also, this company offers crash courses for students to bridge the
gap between what they learn inside the campus and how they are expected to apply that in real
time during a job. It can be assured that this two hour talk made the students ponder about their
careers and view the opportunities offered to them in a different perspective.

The group left the college in the afternoon by the college bus and was received by an Official of
the substation. Students were split into groups and each group, guided by an Engineer was taken
to the various sections in the substation. Students were given a brief tour of the substation’s 400
kV, 220 kV, 110kV and 11kV yards. Students familiarized themselves with the various devices
and machines such as circuit breakers, isolators and transformers and the theory and working of
the same were explained to the students. Significance of transformer oil, causes of its
contamination during operation and methods of its testing and purification were also explained
and an apparatus for purification of transformer oil was observed by the students.
Students also learned about the power distribution system and about the connected loads of
Kerala and India as well as the flow of electric power through the state. Students also learned
about maintenance of electric power lines and factors and limitations in line maintenance and
installation of transmission poles. Students also had the opportunity to interact with KSEB
personnel and to clear any doubts regarding power distribution.
Transformers, their construction for each application, the distribution area, the metering and
testing unit and other related sections were covered precisely in 2 hours. Frequently occurring
faults in the lines and in the machines were also discussed. Mainly the overall power flow,
voltage availability and distribution process, apart from the different type of transformers used
were explained by the officials. The students were also shown the construction of a few electrical
parts of the transformers. The students were allowed to study in detail, about the transformer and
its various parts as well.

ISTE GEC chapter’s initiative to organize this industrial visit is sure to have been thanked many
a time by each student who took part in this industrial visit.
13. BOOK BANK
The idea was incepted out of the realization that every student would benefit tremendously by
possessing access to apt, concise, study material and that no teacher or library would be better
fitting to source the material than students who have already delved the subjects. Thus study
materials and notes for the students were collected and preserved. Text and note books were
collected from pass outs and seniors and made available to the students via the college office.
This, we believe, was really helpful to them at the very basic level.
