Letter from the Head of School
Erik Carlson A significant motivation of mine in my life in schools has been to bring out the best in others. As a student soccer player, I tried to pass to my friend John’s left foot, because with his left he was an impressively lethal goal scorer. As a middle school teacher, I accommodated a student with dysgraphia by asking for an outline and dictation as opposed to a multi-paragraph essay to demonstrate his understanding of the fall of Rome. As an administrator, one of my favorite responsibilities has been mentoring new assistant teachers and then watching them flourish as lead teachers. I also occasionally like to write
a quick email home to a student’s parent that will allow that parent to have a fantastic dinner conversation with his child. I draw deep satisfaction from witnessing the success of those whom I have influenced.
I have chosen a life in schools because I have always felt that everybody was invested in my success. My friends introduced me to their friends. My teachers were generous with their time and patience to help me grapple with a difficult topic. My peer teachers proofread my progress reports. And when I became an administrator, the teachers frequently shared stories about their students and classes that I could include in one of my admissions talks. I have been lifted throughout my career so that I could be at my best.
When I am asked about my leadership philosophy, I often revert to bringing out the best in others. Schools may be unique in that everybody in the community has this capability and generally has the desire to do so. We are a community of leaders. We seek to bring out the best in one another. We are constantly giving of ourselves. In classes, when students collaborate and debate, they are offering perspectives for others to consider and advance. Teachers share thoughts on students or curricula ideas with their colleagues. Parents volunteer time, donate money, and correspond with their child’s teachers — all acts of generosity.
The annual report is the deserving recognition of our community of leaders who seek to bring out the best in one another. When we study “Caring” together as one of our Six Pillars of Character, one of our actions is to express gratitude. Everyday at Saint Andrew’s Episcopal School, we all have much for which to be thankful. While a giving community is satisfying for all members of the community, let’s not forget our singular purpose. We have been brought together because we will go to extraordinary lengths to enable an unparalleled experience for our children. The life of each child matters at Saint Andrew’s and this is worth it.

At Saint Andrew’s, the Board of Trustees is a volunteer group whose membership includes parent, church and community representa-tives. Board members keep their eyes on the big picture, safeguarding our mission long-term while leaving day-to-day operations to the Head of School. The Board offers the financial expertise and vision neces-sary to keep the school healthy for years to come.
The Board of Trustees helps formulate policy, stewards the school’s assets, and selects, retains, and counsels the Head of School. Each year the Board sets and approves the budget as a financial expression of policy decisions. A breakdown of operating revenue and operating expenses can be found in the Annual Report, published each fall. Trustees serve three-year terms. The full Board meets monthly; standing committees meet in frequent working sessions and additional monthly meetings.

Letter from the Board of Trustees President
Matt DiNapoli As we get ready to embark on the 2014–2015 school year, I must say that I have never been more proud to be part of our wonderful Saint Andrew’s community. By working as a team we have accomplished so much this past year in a transparent manner that has helped us grow closer as a community. If someone would have told me at the beginning of last year that all the constituencies within our community would bond together to identify a dynamic new Head of School, to secure a contract to purchase the property that separates our campus and athletic field, to create a strategic plan that will set the course for our future, to provide an enhanced
wages and benefits program for our fabulous faculty and administrative staff, and continue to improve and enhance the educational experience for our children, I would have probably replied, “You must be dreaming.” But as I have told my children on many occasions, “If you can dream it, you can do it.” Well, we did it and we couldn’t have done if we didn’t have such a great community of students, parents, faculty, administrators, alumni, and parishioners contributing their time and talent.
However, there is one dream that still lies ahead of us. It is the dream that was first envisioned by our founder, Roy Strasburger, and carried forward by every family that has ever attended school or church at Saint Andrew’s. It is the dream that one day our campus will include the three-acre property that separates our campus from our athletic field. It is the dream that our children will be able to walk across a campus “quad” on their way to Crestbrook Field, sit beneath a heritage oak tree to read a book or reflect, gather in the oak woodland for a community event, and have room to soar when it becomes necessary to spread our educational wings.
An amazing opportunity stands before us to make an impact on Saint Andrew’s that will be remembered and appreciated for years to come. I am so fortunate to be in a position wherein I see first-hand and get to work with the talented group of parents, alumni, teachers, administrators, parishioners, and Board members we have in our community. If there ever was a group that could accomplish great things, they are here among us. We must set are sights high and reach for the stars because like it has been said, “If you can dream it, you can do it.”
The Board of Trustees is looking forward to the upcoming year with great enthusiasm and dedication to our school. We have four new members on our Board of Trustees that will contribute greatly in our role of supporting our school’s mission and strategic plan. We are truly thankful and blessed to have such a committed and supportive community here at Saint Andrew’s
and by working together as a team, we are strong enough to make our dreams a reality.

Letter from the Board Treasurer
Helen KaneSaint Andrew’s Episcopal School is in excellent financial condition as we welcome our new Head of School Erik Carlson. Conserva-
tive budgets, the growth in student enrollment over the last two years, increasing participation in the annual fund and returns on our
endowment have allowed the Board of Trustees to establish an operating reserve and increase capital spending to improve our
existing facilities. The past summer alone we have made significant improvements to the facilities and infrastructure including
replacing the crumbling concrete on the plaza, installing the new Lower School Science Lab, upgrading the Middle School Science
Lab, relocating the music portable that includes the recording studio that was installed last summer, moving and updating the library
space, as well as installing a modern VoIP phone system and upgrading our broadband network to a 150MB business connection.
Additionally, the Board was very pleased to be able to substantially upgrade our medical and benefit offering for our faculty and
staff. Our financial strength also allowed the Board to execute an option to acquire the property between the school proper and the field and support the long
held vision of joining the campus together.
We continue to contract with Moss Adams to review our financial statements and records, as well as our internal controls. In addition our audit firm provides us
comparative data on the school’s financial well-being. We are pleased to report that we continue a record of both strong audit results and financial health.
We honor our parents for the investment they are making in their children’s education and in the institution that provides the excellent faculty and staff to deliver
that education. We also recognize the tremendous support on all levels (including 100% participation in the annual fund) that the faculty and staff contribute to
Saint Andrew’s Episcopal School and the children under their care.

Letter from Board Development Chair
Nava FathiAs I complete my first year on the Board of Trustees, I am sincerely grateful for the amazing generosity of the Saint Andrew’s
community. Thank you so much for your investment in our school through your gifts to the Annual Fund and winning bids at
the Spring Social.
Saint Andrew’s fosters donor-centered campaigns which provide a sense of meaning and accomplishment for our supporters,
while sustaining and nourishing our school. Your investment has helped provide for the education of the whole child and improved
our facilities for teaching science in both the lower and middle schools.
Annual giving raised 5% of the operating budget from Annual Fund gifts and 1% of the operating budget from the net proceeds
of the Spring Social, organized by the Parent’s Association Board.
The Annual Fund is essential for sustaining our school. We ask for tax-deductible Annual Fund donations in order to fully cover the cost of “the margin of excellence”
that our school provides our students. We are very grateful to the grade level Annual Fund Ambassadors whose many volunteer hours helped us achieve a remarkable
87% parent participation in the Annual Fund this year. We especially thank Lisa Macias, AF Ambassador for the third grade, for achieving 100% participation at
that grade level.
Throughout the Annual Report you will hear the voices of our supporters speaking up about why they give. Their reasons are varied, but have an underlying
theme that we can all appreciate — it’s all about the kids. We each are going above and beyond to make a difference for our children by volunteering and giving to
Saint Andrew’s Episcopal School.
Thank you so much for sharing the joy of giving and coming together to make this a stellar year for Saint Andrew’s Episcopal School.
“We are committed to inspiring, engaging and connecting others to ‘make a difference’ through their philanthropic
support for Saint Andrew’s Episcopal School.”

Why I GiveSaint Andrew’s church and
school has been here for us
and our family for over 30 years.
We can’t imagine life without
this place. Our children were
baptized at Saint Andrew’s
Episcopal Church; two of our
daughters were confirmed
and married here; all attended
pre-school and two graduated
from Saint Andrew’s Episcopal
Day School; one currently
serves on the Board of Trustees;
they attended Camp Saint

the leadership team . . . and
that’s just the beginning.
We can’t imagine our charitable
giving without Saint Andrew’s.
It’s just that important!

Why I GiveGifts from the Annual Fund provide enrichment opportunities for students and teachers that go beyond what
the school would normally support. This could mean more sophisticated learning tools in the classroom, athletic
facilities, and performing arts program. I give to the Annual Fund mainly because the kids are the ones who
ultimately benefit from such gifts. — William Chan

Why I GiveMy husband and I gave to the annual
drive our son’s first year as we felt it
was an expectation and therefore our
obligation. Not inspiring, but true.
Our second year I think our reasons
were considerably different. Our son
is thriving at Saint Andrews. He looks
forward to each day and what it has to
offer: art, music, fitness, well-integrated
technology, excellent teaching, and
a caring and welcoming staff. Our
donation helps to make those programs
possible! I don’t think there could be a
better reason to give. Though this is
our last year at Saint Andrew’s, we also
plan to make a donation to the school
to help with the purchase of the adjacent
property. Perhaps some day we’ll be
lucky enough to be alumni grandparents.

FACULTY AND STAFF:
100% Participation by the Faculty/Staff
by the First Day of School
Our teachers and staff are incredibly dedicated to our students.
In addition to working above and beyond in the classroom, each one
made a meaningful gift to the Annual Fund by the first day of school.
We truly thank them for their dedication and generosity. Thank you
to our Annual Fund volunteers Rachel Flores (Staff), Joey Jalalian
(Lower School), Katie Gerrans (Middle School) for sharing the
importance of giving.
Why I GiveI give because I know that my gift is supporting a great cause. I have taught here for 27 years
and I’ve been able to see so many improvements that resulted from gifts to the Annual Fund.
Saint Andrew’s is always striving to improve. — Grace Tuttle

Parent Participation by Grade LevelWe aspired to achieve 100% parent participation in the Annual Fund this year. Thank you to our parent Annual Fund Ambassadors who helped make this year such a huge success. Each and every gift, no matter the size, is very much appreciated and helps us reach our goal. We appreciate your heartfelt
support for our school this year.
Why I GiveI used to say tuition WAS my annual giving. As I got more involved with the school, I learned that our tuition barely covers
the operating costs with a number of things that we love about the school being seriously underfunded. It was with this
knowledge that we decided to give more our second year and have pretty much gone up every year since without reservation.
When we write that check we see it as a further investment in a place that has come to be like a second home to us.

Letter from Alumni
Mark Hary ’88 and Lindsay Ramar Costigan ’97
We encourage alumni to stay in touch, volunteer and support our school. When we were young students at Saint Andrew’s, we
never thought we would become future board members. But, here we are today, supporting what we loved as children, for future
generations.
We’d like to honor our most dedicated group of alumni parents — Saint Andrew’s teachers whose children have attended our school.
Not only do they share their knowledge with nearly 400 children everyday, they also chose a Saint Andrew’s education for their
own sons and daughters. We appreciate their incredible dedication, generosity and love for our school. Each one of these teacher/
alumni parents also made a meaningful gift to the Annual Fund this year. We truly thank them for leading by example and
demonstrating the meaning of CHARACTER COUNTS!
Young alumni often can’t wait to get back to campus to visit with teachers. Many high school alums came back this year to volunteer
in the classroom. Fulfilling high school community service hours at Saint Andrew’s is a great way to stay in touch with favorite teachers
and check up on your “buddy” from the Buddy Program. If you would like to volunteer in the classroom please contact Victoria Trevor,
Lower School Head, [email protected] and she will make arrangements for your service hours.
The Becoming an Alumni breakfast inducted the Class of 2014 into the Alumni Circle, led by a prayer from Father Cameron. Alumnae
and current parent, Lynne Lampros Arthur ’81, was the Alumnae Speaker, sharing her memories of leaving Saint Andrew’s to head
off to Castilleja School. She gave students three tips:
A N N U A L R E P O RT | 2 8
1. High school is your chance to reinvent yourself, start fresh, a new page — write it as you want it to read.
2. Don’t sweat where you did or didn’t get into school — it matters more what you do and how you do it rather than where you went — do what you love with passion and depth (but also pay the rent!)
3. Stay in touch with Saint Andrews — the school, the faculty and your friends. You may be in each other’s weddings someday.
Class of 2010 alumni reunion
We ended the school year with the Alumni & Family Reunion Barbecue on Crestbrook Field. Alumni parents Renee Gurza
and Catherine Briggs helped reach out to friends and family, and we had a great group of kids and parents enjoy the live Mariachi
Band, play basketball and frisbee and have a zesty BBQ lunch. Alumni of all ages were delighted with the complementary gift
of a Saint Andrew’s Alumni T-Shirt. Wear it with pride!
The Class of 2010 Reunion brought together teenagers from many different high schools, who wanted
to touch base and connect one more time, before launching off to college. Many came with their families. Both parents and
kids renewed ties, shared stories, played ping pong and ate pizza. The Class of 2010 proves that “With the Right Foundation,
Everything is Possible!”
The Class of 2010 has been accepted to outstanding universities around the country including:

Letter from Parents’ Association Board President
Angela Bartlett This is a special place. It was a great privilege for me to serve as the President of the Parents’ Association Board (PAB) during the
2013 – 2014 school year. I leave this position feeling fortunate that I was able to see the power of parent leadership and volunteerism
at Saint Andrew’s through the many community-supported events and activities throughout the year. And, I feel fortunate that I
was able to participate in the celebrations to honor the leadership and accomplishments of Harry McKay during his final year as our
Head of School.
The culture of giving back has been an integral part of the community at Saint Andrew’s from the very beginning. The actions of the parent leaders, volunteers,
and families at this school make a difference. Whether we sign up to drive on a field trip, volunteer to be a Buddy Family, donate cookies for GrandFriends’ Day,
or participate in Annual Giving, I have seen first-hand that the actions of our community do matter. They matter a great deal. We often think that it is the big
moments in our lives that define us, that make us who and what we are. But, in truth it is the small acts, the day-to-day little things that we do that tell others and us
who we are and what we stand for. The message we send to our children when we give of ourselves, even in small ways, is that it is important to give back to what
inspires you, what you believe in and love. Throughout the history of Saint Andrew’s, our families have performed a countless number of acts, both big and small,
and they have collectively made this community strong — a community that we all take pride in and a community that teaches our children.
In addition to working with the many talented parent leaders and volunteers at Saint Andrew’s, I was also fortunate to work with Harry McKay during his last
year as our Head of School. Harry was a steadfast advocate for the Parents’ Association Board throughout his 16 years of leadership at Saint Andrew’s and it
was a great pleasure for all of us on the PAB to work with him over the past year. We, as the Parents’ Association Board, recognized Harry’s service to our school and
to our children by making a $5,000 contribution to the Sally Branon Excellence in Teaching Endowment Fund in his honor. This fund, named in honor and memory
of Sally Branon, assistant to the Head of School from 1972 to 2006, was established to assist with specific teacher needs not already included in the school’s annual
operating budget. Such needs include continuing education, seminars, training, special program materials, equipment, relocation assistance, and other expenses
aligned with the intent of Excellence in Teaching. All of us wish to extend our gratitude and best wishes to Harry as he embarks on a new career and adventure.
At Saint Andrew’s, our community is made stronger by the generosity of our parents, alumni,
faculty, grandparents, and friends. I would like to express my sincere appreciation and gratitude
to all for their commitment to our school — to its past traditions, to its present success, and to
the exciting future before us. This is a special place because our children are getting far more
here than academic excellence. We have a partner in building their character.

Letter from the
Joint Executive Committee (JEC)
This is an exciting time for Saint Andrew’s Episcopal School and Church. We are pleased to report to you the outcome of
our 2014 Feasibility Study regarding the three-acre property sandwiched between our main campus and Crestbrook Field.
First, we want to sincerely thank our community for your participation, perspectives, and insights in the Feasibility Study.
There were sixty-nine households from the school and church who were engaged in personal interviews; and hundreds more
participated in an online survey. The online survey is a very high response rate and reflects our community’s commitment
to this process.
Second, the statistical findings from the study are very clear, compelling, and conclusive. Acquiring the property is over-
whelmingly viewed as necessary and urgent for the future.
» More than 94% of the respondents had a very positive association with Saint Andrew’s.
» 97% of those personally interviewed believe that Saint Andrew’s should conduct a 5 million dollar campaign to acquire the adjacent three-acre property.
» From the personal interviews, 99% indicated they would consider making a personal gift to the campaign while 90% of online respondents said the same.
» 84% of the respondents indicated they would consider volunteering for the campaign.
CCS, the consulting firm that conducted the feasibility study, based on their vast professional experience, strongly believes
that these results bode exceedingly well for a successful capital fundraising campaign. Frankly, we agree, and believe this
is an incredible demonstration of support for the campaign.
Third, after careful and thorough review of the feasibility study, the Joint Executive Committee (JEC) of the School and
Church has recommended Saint Andrew’s move forward with a capital fundraising campaign to acquire the three-acre
property. The Vestry and the School’s Board of Trustees at their respective June board meetings unanimously approved
this recommendation.
We are extremely excited with this decision and look forward to embarking on this exciting project with all of you. We truly
believe this is important step forward for our community. A successful campaign will help us fulfill a long-standing dream,
but more importantly, acquiring the property will present exciting possibilities for the future of Saint Andrew’s. Finally, the
campaign’s success will take great effort from our community, but with your conviction, leadership, generosity and support,
we will make this dream a reality.
The Joint Executive Committee is composed of leaders from both the school and church that meet as a leadership team to discuss concerns in our wider community of the church and school. The Capital Campaign will reach out to both the church and school communities for support to acquire the three-acre property between the academic campus and the playing fields. Saint Andrew’s Episcopal School Endowment FundsEndowment funds insure the long-term sustainability of Saint Andrew’s for future generations. Donations given
to the Endowment Funds generate interest and dividend income that is used to support our school. A healthy
endowment improves the ability of the Board of Trustees to plan for long-term financial health of the school.
This year we received endowment gifts from:
» Debbie Freed
» Ivan Koon and Irene Cheung, Alumni Parents of Chloe’12
» Glenn and Susan Mau
» Parents’ Association Board
Endowment for Financial Aid
Approximately 12% of Saint Andrew’s students receive Financial Aid totaling approximately $400,000 a year.
Like most independent schools, we believe that offering need based Financial Aid is a vital part of our mission,
as we seek to educate the next generation and fulfill the mission of the school.
The Sally Branon Endowment for Excellence in Education
Gifts to this fund assist with specific teacher needs not already included in the school’s annual operating
budget. Such needs include, and are not limited to, continuing education, seminars, training, special program
materials, equipment, and relocation assistance. This fund was named to honor the memory of Sally Branon
who served as assistant to the Head of School from 1972 to 2006.
General Endowment Fund
The Board of Trustees designates gifts to the General Endowment for the long-term stability and health of
the school in accordance with National Association of Independent Schools best practices.
