Railways: Treading a new route for BrazilRailways are the great bet of the moment as the mode of transport considered to be the most economic, safe, efficient and environ-mentally friend for freight movement in Brazil.
Today, almost all rail network used for freight transportation in the country is run by private concessionaires. Altogether, 28,366 Km (more than 17 thousand miles) of railways are operated by the following companies: América Latina Logística (ALL), Ferrovia Centro-Atlântica (FCA), Ferrovia Norte-Sul (FNS), Ferrovia Tereza Cristina (FTC), MRS Logística, Transnordestina (TLSA) and Vale (Estrada de Ferro Carajás – EFC e Estrada de Ferro Vitória a Minas – EFVM), as shown in the map “Freight Railways in Brazil”.
With the process of railway concession, which began in 1996, the rail transport has gained new momentum and is now in the na-tional spotlight. In 16 years, the railway production has grown 117% and twice more the Brazilian GDP.“Brazil would already need 52,000 Km (more than 32 thousand miles) of railways, today”, says ANTF CEO, Rodrigo Vilaça. “We have to recover the rail system in a rapidly, continuously, audited, regulated and funded way, as well as free of public bureaucracy which hinders the sector’s growth”, emphasizes Vilaça.
ABOUT ANTF
The National Association of Rail Carriers (ANTF) is the organization that congregates the private concessionaires of rail freight trans-portation in Brazil. Its mission is to develop and improve the freight railway system conceded to the private initiative. The organiza-tion serves as a reference in the sector, helping to integrate and consolidate freight railways as a modern, efficient and fundamental industry for the development of the country.
The federal government is doing its part and has been investing in the network expansion. On the above map it is possible to see the main corridors of the current network and the expansion constructions of the railways contained in the “Investments in Logistics Program of the Federal Government.”
