Installation Fitting Assemblies
Installationfittingsconnecttothecontrolvalveorthebypassvalveusing nuts that only require hand tightening. Handtightnutconnectionsbetweencontrolvalveandinstallationfittings,controlvalveandbypassvalve,andbypassvalveandinstallationfittingsallowforeaseserviceability.Donotuseapipewrenchtotightennutsoninstallationfittings.Hand tighten only.
Splitringretainerdesignholdsthenutonandallowsloadtobespreadovertheentirenutsurfaceareareducingthechanceforleakage.Thesplitringdesign,incorporatedintotheinstallationfittingsallowsapproximately2degreesoffaxisalignmenttotheplumbingsystem.Theinstallationfittingsaredesignedtoaccommodateminorplumbingmisalignmentsbutarenotdesignedtosupporttheweightofasystemortheplumbing.
Whenassemblingtheinstallationfittingpackage,connectthefittingtotheplumbingsystemfirstandthenattachthenut,splitringando-ring.Heatfromsolderingorsolventcementsmaydamagethenut,splitringoro-ring.Solderjointsshouldbecoolandsolventcementsshouldbesetbeforeinstallingthenut,splitringando-ring.Avoidgettingprimerandsolventcementsonanypartoftheo-ringsorsplitrings,bypassvalveorcontrolvalve.Solventcementsandprimersshouldbeusedinaccordancewiththemanufacturer’sinstructions.
Slipthenutontothefittingfirst,thenthesplitringsecondandtheo-ringlast.handtightenthenut.Ifthefittingisleaking,tighteningthenutwillnotstoptheleak.Removethenut,removethefitting,andcheckfordamageormisalignmentoftheo-ring.
Do notusethepipedopeorothersealantonthreads.Teflontapemustbeusedonthethreadsofthe1”NPTelbowandthe1/4”NPTconnectionandonthethreadsforthedrainlineconnection.Teflontapeisnotnecessaryonthenutconnectionorcapsbecauseofo-ringseals.
Do notuseVaseline,oilsorotherunacceptablelubricantsono-rings.Asiliconlubricantmaybeusedonblacko-rings.
Bypass Valve
Thebypassvalveeasilyconnectstothecontrolvalvebodyusingnutsthatonlyrequirehandtightening.Handtightennutconnectionsbetweencontrolvalveandfittings,controlvalveandbypassvalve,andbypassvalveandinstallationfittingsallowforeasyserviceability.Thesplitringretainerdesignholdsthenutonandallowsloadtobespreadovertheentirenutsurfaceareareducingthechanceforleakage.Thesplitringdesign,incorporatedintothebypass,allowsapproximately2degreesoffaxisalignmenttotheplumbingsystem.Thebypassisdesignedtoaccommodateminorplumbingmisalignmentsbutisnotdesignedtosupporttheweightofasystemortheplumbing.
Avoidgettingprimerandsolventcementsonanypartoftheo-ringsorsplitrings,bypassvalveorcontrolvalve.Donotusepipedopeorothersealantonthreads.Teflontapeisnotnecessaryonthecapsbecauseofo-ringseals.
DonotuseVaseline,oilorotherunacceptablelubricantsono-rings.Asiliconlubricantmaybeusedonblacko-rings.

A. GENERAL
1. Shutoffallwateratmainsupplyvalve.2. Shutoffthefuelsupplytowaterheater.3. Openfaucets(hotandcold)nearestpumporwatermetertorelievepressureanddrainsystem.4. Movesoftenerintotheinstallationposition.Looselyattachallfittingstomeasureforbypassvalveas-
sembly(ifused),ormanualbypassvalve.5. Leveltheunit.Placeshimsundercabinetorbrinetankasneeded. (Do Notusemetalshims.)6. Cutthecoldwatersupplylineasrequired.7. Installthebypassvalveassemblyifused.
B. PLANNING INSTALLATION
1. Allinstallationproceduresmustconformtolocalplumbing,electricalandsanitationcodesandordinances.2. Itisrecommendedthatoutsidefaucetsforlawnservicebeonthehardwaterline,aheadofthesoftener,
toconservesoftenedwater,savesaltandpreventlawndamage.3. Ifthisisn’tpractical,usetheconvenientintegralbypassvalveassemblyduringirrigationflows. CAUTION: The inlet water temperature MUST NOT exceed 1200 F.4. Donotlocatesoftenerwhereambienttemperaturedropsbelow400 F.5. Allowspacearoundthesoftenerforeaseofservicing.6. Thesoftenerdrainlinesmustneverbesolidlyconnectedtothesewerline.(Alwaysprovideanairgapat
theENDofthedrainline).Valvedrainlinemustnotbeelevatedover5’fromthetopofthesofteneronwellsystems,andnotover8’onmunicipalwatersystems.
7. Thesaltstoragecabinetorbrinetankisagravitydrain,andthisdrainlinemustbelowerthanthedrainfittingonthesidewallofthecabinet.
8. Movethesoftenerintopositionandconnecttobypassassembly(ifused).Theintegralmanualbypassoptionisaconnectionwhicheliminatestheneedfora3-valvemanifold.Thismakesinstallationeasierandprovidesamoreconvenientmethodofbypassing.
9. IMPORTANT:Besurethatthewaterinletlineisconnectedtothe“inlet”sideofthebypassvalveortotheinletfitting.(Bypassvalvebothinlet/outletfittingsaremarked.)Ifwaterlinesarereverse,(inlet/out-let)resinmaybeforcedfromthewatersoftenerintothehouseholdplumbingsystem.Ifthisoccurs,householdplumbingsystemmustbeflushedclean.
C. CONNECT ALL FITTINGS (refer to previous page)
CAUTION: Care must be used when working with copper tubing. Do not allow the flame from torch to contact any portion of the Valve assembly.
1. Attach1/2”drainlinetodrainelbowwithinsertandnut.Useoptional3/4”drainfittingsifdrainrun exceeds 25 ft.
2. Donotelevatethedrainlineover5’abovethetopofthevalve(8’onmunicipalsystems)ortoexceed25’inlengthateitherheight.
CAUTION: An air gap must be provided upon sewer entry. (Conform to local plumbing and sanitation codes and ordinances).
3. Thesaltstoragecabinetorbrinetankprovidesanoverflow.Attach1/2”IDflexibleplastictubingtotheoverflowfittinganddirectittothedrain.DO NOTconnecttothemaindrainline.Useaseparategravityflowline.

D. PRESSURE TEST THE INSTALLATIONTheplumbingsystemcannowbecheckedforanypossibleleaks1. Puttheunitintobackwash.Todothis,pushandholdtheREGENbuttonfor3-5seconds.Whenthe
Valvestopscycling,unplugtheunit.Withwatersupplyoff,putthebypassintotheserviceposition.2. Openwatersupplylinevalveveryslowly.Watershouldescapeslowlyfromthedrainline.Ifwaterenters
tooquickly,resinmaybelosttothedrain.3. Whenalloftheairhasbeenpurgedfromthemineraltank(waterflowssteadilyfromthedrain)openthe
mainsupplyvalvefully.4. Allow water to run to drain until clear. CHECK FOR LEAKS!5. Plugtheunitbackin.6. Manuallysteptheunitthroughtheremainingsteps,stoppingatthefillcycle(todothis,pushtheREGEN
button.TheunitwillsayBrineonthescreen).Oncethepistonhasstoppedmoving,pushtheREGENbuttonagaintothenextcycle.ContinueuntilFillappearsonthescreen.Theunitwillnowfillthebrinetanktotheappropriatelevel.(Thissequnceisforsoftenerswithpostfillbrine)
7. Allowcontroltoreturntothehomeposition.8. Checkforleaks!9. Makesurethepowercordispluggedintoaproperlygroundedwallreceptacle.
E. MANUAL REGENERATIONTheusercaninitiatemanualregeneration.Theuserhastheoptiontorequestamanualregenerationatthe delayedregenerationtimeortohavetheregenerationoccurimmediately:1. PressingandreleasingtheREGENbutton.“RegenToday”willflashonthedisplayandtheregeneration willoccuratthedelayedregenerationtime.Theusercancanceltherequestbypressingandreleasing
theREGENbutton.Thismethodofmanuallyinitiatingregenerationisnotallowedwhenthesystemissetto immediatelyregeneratewhenthegalloncapacityreacheszero.2. PressingandholdingtheREGENbuttonforapproximately3secondswillimmediatelystarttheregeneration Theusercannotcancelthisrequest.
NOTE: Program Timer “Lockout” Feature
TheProgramTimerisinitiallysettoallowaccesstoallProgramming,DiagnosticandHistoryscreens
TheInstallercanlimitaccessto(lockout)mostscreensbyactivatingtheLockoutFeature.
Activating“Lockout”allowstheusertoviewandchangeonlyWaterHardness,DaysOverride,TimeofRegenerationandTimeofday.
Activate “Lockout” Feature:PressthenNEXTthenthenSETCLOCKinsequence.LOCwillbrieflyappear inthedisplay.
De-activate “Lockout” Feature:PressthenNEXTthenthenSETCLOCK.UNLOCwillbrieflyappearin thedisplay.
Wheninoperationnormaluserdisplayssuchastimeofday,gallonsremainingordaysremainingbeforeregenerationareshown.Whensteppingthroughaprocedureifnobuttonsarepressedwithinfiveminutesthedisplayreturnstoanormaluserdisplay.Anychangesmadepriortothefiveminutetimeoutareincorporated.Theoneexceptioniscur-rentflowratedisplayunderthediagnosticprocedure.Thecurrentflowratedisplayhasa30minutetimeoutfeature.

Control Valve Function and Cycles of Operation
ThisglassfilledNoryl1fullyautomaticcontrolvalveisdesignedastheprimarycontrolcentertodirectandregulateallcyclesofawatersoftenerorfilter.Whenthecontrolvalveissetupasasoftener,thecontrolvalvecanbesettoperformdownfloworupflowregenerationwiththeproperpiston.Whenthecontrolvalveissetupasafilter,thecontrolvalvecanbesettoperformdownflowregenerationorsimplybackwash.Thecontrolvalvecanbesettoregenerateondemand(consumptionofapredeterminedamountofwater)and/orasatimeclock(passageofaparticularnumberofdays).ThecontrolvalvecanbesetsothatthesoftenercanmeettheWaterQualityAssociation(WQA)orNSFInternationalefficiencyrating.
Thecontrolvalveiscompatiblewithavarietyofregenerantsandresincleaners.Thecontrolvalveiscapableofroutingtheflowofwaterinthenecessarypathstoregenerateorbackwashwatertreatmentsystems.Theinjectorregulatestheflowofbrineorotherregenerants.Thecontrolvalveregulatestheflowratesforbackwashing,rinsingandthereplenishingoftreatedwaterintoaregeneranttank,whenapplicable.
Thecontrolvalveisdesignedtodeliverhighservice(27gpm@15psig)andbackwash(27gpm@25psig)flowrateswhenthebypasshasstraightfittingsanda1.050”distributor.Thecontrolvalveusesnotraditionalfasteners(e.g.screws),insteadclips,threadedcaps,nutsandsnaptypelatchesareused.Capsandnutsonlyneedtobefirmlyhandtightenedbecauseradialsealsareused.Toolsrequiredtoservicethevalveincludeonesmallbladescrewdriver,pliersandapairofhands.Disassemblyforservicingtakesmuchlesstimethancomparableproductscurrentlyonthemarket.Controlvalveinstallationismadeeasybecausethedistributortubecanbecut1/2”aboveto1/2”belowthetopofthetankthread.Thedistributortubeisheldinplacebyano-ringsealandthecontrolvalvealsohasabayonetlockfeatureforupperdistributorbaskets.
Thetransformerpowerpackcomeswitha15-footpowercordandisdesignedforusewiththecontrolvalve.Thetransformerpowerpackisfordrylocationuseonly.Thecontrolvalveremembersallsettingsfortwohoursifthepowergoesout.Aftertwohours,theonlyitemthatneedstoberesetisthetimeofday;allothervaluesarestoredinthememory.Thecontrolvalvedoesnotneedbatteries.
Table3showstheorderofthecycleswhenthevalveissetupasasoftener.Whenthecontrolvalveisusedasadownflowsoftener,twobackwashesalwaysoccur.Whenthecontrolvalveisusedasanupflowsoftener,onlyonebackwashoccursafterbrining.Theinstallerhastheoptionofhavingtheregenerantrefillaftertherinsecycleorhavetheregenerantprefillbeforeregeneration.Iftheinstallerchoosestohavetheregenerantprefillbeforeregeneration,theprefillstartstwohoursbeforetheregenerationtimeset.Duringthe2-hourperiodinwhichthebrineisbeingmade,treated(softened)waterisstillavailable.Forexample:regenerationtime=2:00A.M.,prefilloptionselected,downflowsoftener.Filloccursat12:00A.M.,startofbackwashcycleoccursat2:00A.M.

Toinitiateamanualregenerationatthepresetdelayedregenerationtime,pressandrelease“REGEN”.Thewords“REGENTODAY”willflashonthedisplaytoindicatethatthesystemwillregenerateatthepresetdelayedregenera-tiontime.Ifyoupressedthe“REGEN”buttoninerror,pressingthebuttonagainwillcanceltherequest.Note:Iftheregenerationtimeoptionissetto“on0”thereisnosetdelayedregenerationtimeso“REGENTODAY”willnotactivateif“REGEN”buttonispressed.Toinitiateamanualregenerationimmediately,pressandholdthe“REGEN”buttonforthreeseconds.Thesystemwillbegintoregenerateimmediately.Therequestcannotbecancelled.Note:Forsofteners,ifbrinetankdoesnotcontainsalt,fillwithsaltandwaitatleasttwohoursbeforeregenerating.

Bypass ValveThebypassvalveistypicallyusedtoisolatethecontrolvalvefromtheplumbingsystem’swaterpressureinordertoper-formcontrolvalverepairsormaintenance.TheWS1bypassvalveisparticularlyuniqueinthewatertreatment industryduetoitsversatilityandstateoftheartdesignfeatures.The1”fullflowbypassvalveincorporatesfourpositionsincludingadiagnosticpositionthatallowsservicepersonaltoworkonapressurizedsystemwhilestillprovidinguntreatedbypasswatertothefacilityorresidence.Itscompletelynon-metallic,allplastic,designallowsforeasy accessandserviceabilitywithouttheneedfortools.
ThebypassbodyandrotorsareglassfilledNorylandthenutsandcapsareglassfilledpolypropylene.Allsealsare self-lubricatingEPDMtohelppreventvalveseizingafterlongperiodsofnon-use.Internalo-ringscaneasilybereplaced ifserviceisrequired.
Thebypassconsistsoftwointerchangeableplugvalvesthatareoperatedindependentlybyredarrowshapedhandles.Thehandlesidentifytheflowdirectionofthewater.Theplugvalvesenablethebypassvalvetooperateinfourpositions.
