It has been an honor to serve as Chairman of the Area Development Partnership this past year. I am continually impressed by the success and progress made by the Area Development Partnership and Greater Hattiesburg. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the ADP staff, members, and board of directors. In 2018, we have had the opportunity to host a variety of successful events including the ADP Corporate Golf Challenge, HUBFEST, and Business After Hours. These programs add value to your investment in the ADP, and we view your membership as an investment not only in our organization, but in Greater Hattiesburg. I would like to thank each of you for your membership, partnership, and helping us enhance the overall quality of life in Greater Hattiesburg. I look forward to closing out 2018 stronger than ever.
This fall is shaping up to be full of opportunities to network, engage in the community, increase your visibility, and grow your business. In October, you will enjoy hearing from our local elected officials at Accelerate as our leaders discuss items of interest around the region. In November, our Partnership Foundation Pinnacle investors will get a chance to learn more about economic development projects occurring throughout Greater Hattiesburg. Four ADP Business After Hours will occur in the 4th quarter including events at the Pinebelt Foundation, Corner Market’s new flagship store in Midtown Market, the Mississippi Polymer Institute at The Accelerator, and Canebrake Country Club. Tailored ADP programs for certain segments of our membership are also occurring throughout the region for young professionals, realtors, area manufacturers, students, educators, elected officials, etc.
You should make plans now to attend our 2018 ADP Annual Meeting featuring NASCAR driver Julia Landauer. Julia will deliver an awesome diversity in the workplace message, encourage females to enter STEM related professions, and highlight tips for females on how to best navigate in male-dominated professions. As we all seek to grow and diversify our workplaces, this will be an inspirational yet challenging message. I hope you enjoy the Q & A with Julia as our feature story this quarter and make plans to see her live on Friday, November 30th. Tickets can be purchased online at www.theADP.com.
Significant economic development projects are occurring throughout Greater Hattiesburg encompassing retail, mixed use, back office, headquarters, healthcare, manufacturing, and new small business startups. Just know that your economic development team is involved in these projects, which stimulates the regional economy and creates demand for your company’s products and services. With jobs being retained and created, the multiplier effect creates wonderful opportunities for your businesses.
Be sure to tell your friends, family, and business colleagues about all the wonderful benefits associated with supporting the ADP! Encourage them to join our organization. If you get a prospective member to join, then we will gladly send you a $50 gift card to a member restaurant or retailer. Please contact Ann Scott Miles at (601) 408-5171 for additional information or to make a referral. Thanks in advance for your continued support of the ADP as our staff, Board of Directors, investors, and volunteers work collaboratively to make Greater Hattiesburg an even better place to live and do business.

ADP: What do you enjoy most about your job?Julia Landauer: I love the speed, mastering a track and a car, and winning. However I also really enjoy the puzzle component of being a professional racer – I have to master not only the on-track components, but I have to build a brand, develop partnerships, resonate with fans, etc. There are so many different things that go into racing, which keeps it exciting.
As a two-time champion NASCAR driver, how do you stay grounded and balanced?I think most athletes constantly strive to get better, no matter how good they are. Even when I win a lot, I want to figure out how to win better, or by more, or
break new records. I definitely appreciate the successes I have, but I also regularly feel like there’s more out there, and that keeps me hungry.
You are also an advocate for women in S.T.E.M., what do you think is the biggest challenge for women to be successful in a male-dominated field? There are a lot of challenges that women face, and I have found that it can be very frustratingly challenging to get respect from peers, team members, team owners, etc. Women have to work harder than men to prove they’re worthy of being there, which is unfortunate. I think as women break into male-dominated fields there’s a ridiculous expectation that these women need to be perfect in order to get the same credibility as men, and the reality is that we’re all human and perfection is impossible.
What advice would you give women entering the workforce?I have two pieces of advice:
1) You have to advocate for yourself. If you don’t believe in yourself, and speak up about it, then why should other people?
2) Assume that people won’t give you what you deserve, but you deserve whatever you can get. This applies to money, time, respect, etc.

RACING TO SUCCESSQ & A with Annual Meeting Speaker Julia Landauer
How do you define success? I’m pretty cut-and-dry when it comes to defining success. I believe success is setting goals that you care about, working very hard, and achieving those goals. On
the track, I want to win at every level I race at and make it to the top levels of NASCAR. Off the track, I want to build a platform where I can advocate for women and STEM education, inspire others, meet incredible and driven people, and gain financial independence to continue to fight for what I believe in. If I can get that, I’ll consider myself very successful.

The ADP hosted its inaugural Leadership Exchange September 27th-30th in the Auburn-Opelika, AL region. The purpose of the visit was to exchange ideas and success stories in the areas of strategic public-sector investments, industrial and retail development, workforce training, education and downtown re-development. As one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the nation, Auburn-Opelika offers exceptional schools, a cost of living of 92.5% as compared to the national average and is home to numerous large employers such as Auburn University, East Alabama Medical Center, Walmart Distribution, Mando America Corporation, Briggs and Stratton, Baxter Healthcare, and Pharmavite. In 2017,
the Auburn-Opelika MSA ranked number 10 on the Milken Institute’s 2017 Best-performing Cities: Where America’s Jobs are Created and Sustained, and in 2018 the state of Alabama topped Business Facilities list for its business climate, which also ranked the Auburn-Opelika MSA first in the state among small metro areas for its economic growth potential. Auburn-Opelika boasts a population over 160,000 residents and has an average household income of $64,310. Since January 2005, the City of Opelika has announced over $1.2B in capital investment, the creation of 3,229 jobs, and in 2015 Forbes ranked the community #7 on the List of America’s Best Small Cities for Jobs.

leadership pinebeltGenerating Awareness and Enriching the Quality of LifeThe ADP’s Leadership Pinebelt class of 2018 has been busy creating opportunities to enhance the quality of life across the region by bringing awareness to causes that touch the heart. Each year, projects are developed with the sole purpose of enriching existing programs or creating new opportunities for community involvement. While some of these projects are completed in one year, others are on-going, but no matter the status, these community-based initiatives are developed to make the place we call home a great place to live, work, and play. This year’s slate of projects covers various ends of the spectrum. From sending students on tour around the region, to building bus stop canopies to shelter our youth, or providing diapers to new and expectant mothers, there’s a little something for everyone at the heart of each project. Leadership Pinebelt will graduate it’s 30th class on Tuesday, October 2nd at the Trent Lott Center where they will present their completed community projects.
Originally established as a partnership with the Oseola Youth Development Center, Youth on Tour has hosted students at the Gulf Coast Marine Education Center in Ocean Springs and to the Global Wildlife Center in Folsom, Louisiana. The Marine Education Center trip featured eight exciting topics that allowed students to create their own rich marine education experience which included, Shark Dissection, Coastal Reptiles and Plankton & Copepods modules. The Global Wildlife Center featured a day-long safari reminiscent of sub-Saharan Africa on this 900-acre free-roaming park. The third and final trip will be held in Laurel with the United Christian Academy to experience the Da Vinci exhibit at the Lauren Rogers museum.
Shelter Hattiesburg is raising funds to construct safe, comfortable and sustainable bus shelters for students waiting on transit. After researching both the Hub City Transit and HPSD transportation routes, Shelter Hattiesburg’s mission became crys talclear: provide safe, comfort able andsustainable bus shelters to students and members of the community. Shelters will support current and future generations by encouraging attendance to school, allowing students more instructional hours andopportunities to grow. The project is a partnership with public sector enti -ties, City of Hattiesburg and Forrest County which will help offset instal la-tion fees, as each shelter costs $5000 to construct. Four shelters havebeen confirmed with plans for a fifth shelter to be built later this year.
Pine Belt Diaper Bank is a community diaper bank in partnership with Edwards Street Fellowship and United Way to collect, store and distribute diapers for families who are in need. A goal of $10,000 has been set to create and sustain the Pine Belt Diaper Bank. To engage the community at large, the group hosted a Community Diaper Drive in the month of September as well as a Stuff-a- Bus collection day and a fundraising event. The events were a great success and featured Bullseye, the Target Dog, the Forrest General Hospital Spirit Girls, as well as food and drinks provided by Sully’s and Hattiesburg Coca-Cola Bottling Company.

Pine Belt Young Professionals (PBYP) is an opportunity for individuals ages 21-45 to connect with business professionals from various industries and career levels, hone their skill sets and serve the community in which they live. Oftentimes as young professionals it can be daunting to walk into a room filled with seasoned business leaders and strike up a conversation. Fortunately, Pine Belt Young Professionals is a great training ground for entry and mid-level professionals to learn how to market themselves to others in casual environ ments such as the Off the Clock events. Additionally, to keep PBYPs abreast of pertinent information as-it’s-happening, a Blue Plate Lunch is held at area member restaurants and features business leaders and key initiatives that are impacting the region.
PBYP gives young professionals a place to grow both personally and professionally. All events
are planned and coordinated by the PBYP committee, a group of volunteers dedicated to providing opportunities for their peers. Committee members are selected based on leadership potential, community involvement and industry diversity.
