ART 21 PROJECT
"BACKFIRE," 2004ARTISTS: ALLORA & CALZADILLA
Media: Nine color photographs Dimensions: 16 x 20 inches each
In Allora’s & Calzadilla’s photo they decided to create nine
smaller images to help produce one large representation of the solar system. In many of their
artworks they try to help convey the message that everything and anything is beautiful and unique
in there own way.

“A SWIRL OF COLOR”, 2013 ARTIST: PARIS CUMMINGS
Media: Dish soap, food coloring, 2% milk, Photography Dimensions: 5x7 each
In response to Allora’s & Calzadilla’s work, I decided to
create my own solar system by using three simple ingredients:
milk, food coloring, and dish soup. By doing this it helped in simulating the planets Allora &
Calzadilla created.

"SPIRAL”, (1994)ARTIST: LOUISE BOURGEOIS
Media: Watercolor, ink and colored pencil on paper Dimensions: 13 1/4 x 9 1/2 in. (33.7 x 24.1 cm)
Bourgeois created her piece, Spiral through using circles to
create an image of caving in. She also painted in semicircles to help
create visual points as well as lines in this piece.

“AS FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEE”, 2013
ARTIST: PARIS CUMMINGS
Media: Autorefractor, Photography Dimensions: 5x7
In response to Bourgeois’ photography, I decided to carry of some of her use of
lines into my reaction. For my photograph I took a picture of an eye
looking through an Autorefractor, which provides an objective measurement of a
person's refractive error and prescription for glasses or contact
lenses. This helped create the same idea of the circles Bourgeois presented
in her work.

"MIRROR, MIRROR”, (1987)ARTIST: CARRIE MAE WEEMS
Media: Gelatin silver print, Photography Dimensions: 14 1/2 x 14 1/2 inches
In this work Weems contrasts a black and white photograph with
an alternate version from the story of Snow White. She tries to draw attention to the notions of racial difference. Weems’ image makes allusions in the language and role
reversal used by the literary figure.

“CONTEMPLATION”, 2013ARTIST: PARIS CUMMINGS
Media: Photography Dimensions: 5x7
In response to Weems photograph, Mirror, Mirror I decided to
photograph another minority to represent the same feeling of the
racial differences shown in society. I had her looking back at herself in the mirror contemplating why she
isn’t beautiful in everyone’s eyes. I felt that this helped convey the
same message that “Snow White” was under the impression of.
