ABOUT THE PROJECTFamily and friends are important to this family who
wanted a beautiful, yet relaxed home for family
times and entertaining. This custom-built home
welcomes visitors with a charming country French
façade, complete with arches and stonework. The
home’s interiors have a transitional classic style.
Texture was a big factor in the design from the iron railing to warm wood tones, rustic beams
and natural stone. Antique light fixtures add character. Colors are kept soft in tones of butter,
grey green and soft mocha with a splash of paprika. Special paint finishes on doors, cabinets
and walls add interest and depth. The expansive kitchen opens to the breakfast room and fam-
ily room to provide the heart of the first floor. A master suite upstairs with vaulted ceilings and
expansive views provides a quiet retreat.

ABOUT THE PROJECTThe newly remodeled outdoor oasis was
the first step initiating the homeowner’s
desire for a residence that would inte-
grate comfortable elegance as well as
reflect their sophisticated style.
This stately River Oaks home received a kitchen facelift, a perfect example of how to
enhance a space without completely changing the footprint. Proper space planning,
along with appropriately scaled furniture in an updated color palette transformed this
home with casual grace. The new design impacted all downstairs areas of the home,
especially the kitchen, open family room, and the gracious master suite. The new flow
within the spaces visually opens the rooms to maximize all areas and create a wonder-
ful backdrop for entertaining friends and colleagues.

ABOUT THE PROJECTThe concept for this kitchen was based on
“Ellipticine” by Damien Hirst, a colorful abstract
painting. Laura U incorporated elements of the
clients’ favorite art work, to create an a bright,
whimsical kitchen and breakfast area. Goals were
to inject whimsy and color into the space, as well
as to create a functional kitchen for a family. This
kitchen features high-gloss, Poggenpohl cabi-
netry, calacatta marble, Schenk hardwood floors
in a herringbone pattern, and Miele appliances.
Custom vanities with mirrored fronts, sides and
drawers provide the focal point for the opulent
master bath. The Calacatta marble tops feature a
super double roman ogee edge profile. Trim
detail in Ralph Lauren Ambassador Sterling.

RESOURCESABOUT THE PROJECTSet on a lot that backs up to the Hogg BirdSanctuary and Bayou Bend, the home boastslots of open space with high ceilings and largewindows. In the kitchen, a turquoise banquetteand irregular shaped table contrast with themany horizontal layers of stone and glass tile inthis contemporary, yet earthy kitchen.
For the spa-inspired master bath, wrap-around vanities, designed with a continuous stone countertop, unify the space and create a natural flow. An oversized air tub anchors a wall of windows that natural-ly warms the space while providing privacy with textured glass. A steam room further connects thebath to nature by opening onto a sundeck. The Ambra tile that resembles ripples of water was installedin the steam/shower, which functions as a major focal point. Various gray tones of flooring, counter-tops, and walls are offset by the warm glow from mother-of-pearl shell mirror frames.

ABOUT THE PROJECTThe wife of this couple is an avid cook and
every previous kitchen the couple had owned
was white. She asked for a very streamlined
look but with dark stained cabinets and light
counters and backsplash. One of the desired
goals was to have two places to entertain
their grandchildren within the kitchen.
The seating area for casual dining was relo-
cated to the area below the two skylights,
where a new decorative light fixture was
placed to illuminate the table. Wendt Design
Group extended the bar counter to accom-
modate three bar stools for the children. A
small plasma TV was installed as well, and
services either the bar or kitchen with a sim-
ple change in the arm direction.

ABOUT THE PROJECTColor is the theme for this 1100-square-foot city retreat,
inspired by travels to coastal areas around Cape Cod, and it
plays a consistent role throughout the house as a back drop
to the eclectic art collection highlighting Texas artists and
artifacts from the owner’s travels.
Woods dressed up the original kitchen cabinets by adding
crown molding and trim in a diamond pattern. Decorative
painter Kevin Davis helped Woods transform the original cabinets to look like pieces of fur-
niture.
Woods created a unique ceiling treatment in the bathroom by hand-weaving strips of var-
ious wallpapers and framed it all with silver-leaf molding. The new pedestal sink is framed
by a sleek parson’s table. The built-in medicine cabinet is new, yet fits the home’s era.

ABOUT THE PROJECTThis kitchen was designed in the Arts &
Crafts style with decorative backsplash
tiles from that period. The space is clean-
lined and efficient. One of the clients is a
culinary graduate and wanted this kitchen
to truly be a working kitchen for a serious
cook, so two generous islands were
worked into the plan. Granite was used for
the countertops and the rest of the back-
splash is finished with white subway tiles.
Overhead lighting is provided by both
recessed can lights and decorative blown
glass pendants on a track. Upper windows
and a nice-sized single window provide
ample natural light as well. The colors and
textures combine to create a welcoming
center for the home.

ABOUT THE PROJECTThe original kitchen in this Garden Oaks
home was small and closed-off, but had
plenty of storage. The design approach was
to open up the space by removing walls and
keep the same amount of storage, while
transforming the kitchen into a gathering
place with a lounge and dining area.
The wall that backs up the bar area remained and was utilized for storage, while the
other walls were removed to open up the space. The cooktop moved from the penin-
sula to a working island where a stainless hood was installed above. The new island
provides the same amount of storage that was lost with the removal of the walls. The
dinning table was relocated to the back side of the island, overlooking the pool. The
former dining area became a lounge area with a dramatic light feature and an over-
stuffed chair.
ABOUT THE DESIGNERFor more than a decade, Nicole has pulled from her extensive
