Assistive Technology

Assistive technology definitionAssistive technology is any device, system or design you can use to perform tasks that otherwise you couldn’t do. These technologies can also increase ease and safety for tasks you already manage.

Aids, equipment or devices are sometimes called assistive technology.

You can:

buy these technologies off the shelf

get things you already own modified or adapted

get something made or customised especially for your needs.

Assistive technology can be as simple as a:

jar opener

tap or key turner

book rest.

It can also be as complex as a:

powered wheelchair

hoist to lift you

modified vehicle

home automation and modifications.

Most of us use some kind of assistive technology every day.

Choose the right assistive technologyA wide range of assistive technology is available.

Your needs are specific to your requirements, activities and abilities. We consider many factors before deciding on which technology suits you best.

Evaluating your needs and circumstances can be complex and overwhelming process. You should get advice and information from health professionals about which solution is best for you.
