MISSION U
What is Mission u?
Mission u is an opportunity to grow in your
faith, meet new neighbors, and learn about
the world God so loves. Mission u brings
together women, men, and youth for dynam-
ic worship, community building, and engag-
ing study that explores the implications of our
Christian faith in today’s world.
For participants, Mission u is an opportunity to study current issues
impacting society based or current mission study topics with particular
attention to the responsibilities of women in fulfilling the mission work
of the church. Participants grow in understanding the mission of the
church in the current world context. The Mission u events are open to
members and non-members of United Methodist Women.
Mission U begins at 3 PM on Friday, JULY 28 at North Scottsdale
UMC (11735 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale). Please keep the
participants in your prayers as they gather for this time of study & re-
newal.

United Methodist Women Bible Study
(Room 104) Meets Wednesday, August 10th at 5:30 PM.
Continuing the study of the book by James W. Moore, “God Was Here
and I Was Out to Lunch”, this study explores how, due to our rigid
preoccupation with our busy-ness and routines, we fail to sense or
appreciate the presence of God all around us; consequently, we miss
out on the chance to tap in to common sense, we miss out on the
chance to love God and others, and we miss out on the chance to
connect with Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.
All Ladies Welcome!

AUGUST MISSIONS FOCUS: REFUGEES
HOME ESSENTIAL KITS
We will be helping refugees in multiple ways, and we invite
you to assist where possible. Our Communion offering will be
given to UMCOR to support refugee programs.
UMCOR works with Church World Services to provide support
for refugees around the world. Locally, Refugee Focus falls
under that umbrella, and with it Lifting Hands International, an
organization devoted to giving refugees a helping hand when
they first land on Arizona soil. Lifting Hands assists the organi-
zations like Refugee Focus to set up apartments, provide
meals, household kits, groceries and children’s packages so
that families can have more than the clothes on their back
when they leave everything behind and bring only hope for a
new start with them.
Throughout August, we will collect household items for the
Home Essentials Kit that is given to every refugee family.
Items needed are:
Scissors
Roll of clear tape,
Small roll of duct tape
Pencils, pens, glue
Hammer, screwdriver, pliers
Batteries (AAA, AA)
Length of rope and clothes pins
Small package of finishing nails, screws and
anchors (for wall hangings)
Envelopes
Extension cord, flashlight
Small sewing kit (Dollar Store)
Small first aid kit and or small quantity of band
aids in a small baggie
2 gallon bags
MISSIONS
PC’S FOR REFUGEES
In addition to the Home Essentials kits for Lifting Hands Inter-
national, we will have a special collection of PCs and electron-
ics for PCs for Refugees, an organization that recycles com-
puters and related equipment and gives them to refugees to
enhance job searches, school assignments, and learning the
English language and American
culture.
We will accept PCs for Refugees on Sunday, August 20.
If you are unable to bring your used equipment that day, you
may drop it off at the church office during the week August 14
- 17. (Office hours are Monday—Thursday, 9 AM—2PM.)
We do not have room to store equipment throughout the
month, so we appreciate your assistance with this.
Items accepted by PCs for Refugees are:
Computer donations (PC's & Laptops)
Tablets (Android, Apple, or Kindle's)
Computer speakers (computers can’t be given out without speakers and this is one item that must consistently be purchased by PCs for Refu-gees)
Keyboards
Mice
Monitors
Hard drives
USB Drives
Memory Sticks (RAM)
Mouse pads
Power Cables
VGA Cables (Monitor Cables)
HDMI Cables (for connecting laptop to TV as secondary screen)
Please note:
PCs for Refugees does not accept CRT Monitors (those really
old and heavy and thick monitors) because they can be very
difficult to work with and some of the families lack a computer
desk making it difficult to work with in many cases.
If you have any questions about the programs the Missions
Team is supporting this month, please call, text or email Pen-
ny Boese at 480-862-3129 or [email protected]. Thank you for
your continued support of the Missions of CUMC.

MUSIC MINISTRY
What We Do:
The Adult Handbell Choir plays two to five octave music,
and the Chancel Choir sings four part choral music of all
styles. All youth choirs ring two octave music, and sing
unison to two-part music. All choirs sing and ring for the
sole purpose of glorifying God.
Why We Play and Sing:
Music in the church is one of the most integral parts of
worship, and is one of very few things in the world that is
able to connect us so deeply to God. St. Augustine, a
renowned theologian from the fourth century, said: “He
who sings prays twice.”
Everyone form high school age and older is welcome to
sing and ring in the adult choirs, and everyone from Kin-
dergarten to 8th grade is welcome to sing and ring in the
youth choirs.
There is no experience necessary to join any of the
choirs.
When We Sing:
Adult choirs rehearse on Wednesday evenings be-
ginning August 2nd.
Hand bell rehearsal: 6 - 7 PM
Chancel Choir rehearsal: 7:05 - 8:15 PM
Youth choirs rehearse on Sunday mornings at 10
AM beginning August 6th.

The Value and Purpose
of the Adult and Youth Choirs at
Chandler United Methodist Church
The value of the adult and youth choirs, and the pur-
pose of any choir in the Church , is the proclamation of
the gospel. This is done in two ways, care and compas-
sion for each choir member, and singing as an expres-
sion of the gospel.
The first value that the adult and youth choirs have is
that we are caring and compassionate for each other.
This means we submit our lives to the Messiahship of
Jesus through participation in a group of people commit-
ted to singing the gospel. The members of the choir
care for each other when hardships arise.
Fellowship is also important to our ministry, as it helps
members get to know each other more intimately. The
adult choirs at CUMC go on outings regularly throughout
the choral season to support one another.
Second is the playing and singing of the gospel. As an
expression of loving and living the gospel, egos are put
aside, and individual voices are carefully subordinated
to group sound. Adam and
Nancy’s job in the life of the church as the directors of
the adult and youth choirs is to lead and coach the
blending of bells and voices to create and grow the
members of each group, rich in harmony, through which
to proclaim the gospel. They do this in a caring and
loving manner. Although there is no prior experience
necessary to be in the groups, their goal is to get the
most out of the ringers and singers.
These are only two of the many values and purposes of
the adult and youth choirs at Chandler UMC. Adam and
Nancy look forward to continuing the tradition of bringing
the gospel to life at Chandler United Methodist Church.
