The benefits of love are measurable

Being in love protects your heart. A Univ.of Pittsburgh study found that women ingood marriages have a much lower risk ofcardiovascular disease. Being in love helpsbeat cancer. A Univ. of Iowa researcher foundthat ovarian cancer patients with a strongsense of connection to others & satisfyingrelationships had more vigorous “naturalkiller” cell activity at the site of the tumor.LOVE MORE!

A Note from the Executive Director

Hello all! The ancient Romansconsidered August the “dog days” ofsummer. But according to my puppy Hank,it’s just plain HOT! He’s definitely preferringthe air conditioning or the pool right now,and I know you are, too!Our leadership team is starting to sizzle, too! I’m honored to announce that we’vepromoted two members of our team:• Mel Walters is our new Life Enrichment

Director, responsible for leading and organizing our social, physical, spiritual andintellectual activities. As one of our lead nursing assistants, Mel’s been involved in all of ouractivities since we opened our doors, and she’s a person we rely on for her great energyand organizational skills.• Nurse Shameen Hamid has been promoted to our Director of Nursing, after serving as anurse since our beginning. Shameen is now responsible for managing the overall systemsand process of keeping on top of your health needs, especially those of you receivingassisted and memory care services. What I’ve learned over time is that this is a big jobbehind-the-scenes, making sure we’re on track not only with what you need but with all ofthe state and national best practices we follow. You might remember what it was like to be promoted into a new opportunity—I certainlydo! I know these amazing women can count on your encouragement, support, andwisdom as they step into these roles. Please don’t hesitate to stop them and tell themcongrats.September’s right around the corner, andwith it comes our first anniversary! MarkFriday, September 15th on your calendar! It’sbeen my honor to be here from the start, likemany of you. We’re currently brainstormingplans to celebrate, and I’d love to hear yourthoughts! So, if you were here when thedoors opened or even if you just joined usyesterday, let me know how you’d like tocelebrate!Remember to keep drinking your water andstaying safe!

Why the Wii Fit is Great for Seniors

If you know a senior that’s full of excuseswhen the subject of exercise comes up - orone that would like to be more active, but hashad trouble figuring out the best way to do so- the Wii Fit may be just the solution theyneed.

It works!

If you’re concerned that a video gamecouldn’t possibly provide the level of work out needed, don’t worry it really does. Whilestudies done suggest the work out doesn’t do that much for younger users, it actuallymakes a big difference for older users. The Wii Fit has been shown to reduce falls andimprove balance in seniors. It won’t make you a body builder, but it will make you healthierand help you age more safely.

It’s fun!

The biggest excuse people have that keeps them from exercising is that they simply don’twant to. Why make the time for something you don’t enjoy when there are TV shows towatch and fun hobbies to pursue. Join us this month and try it out.

Parachute on the Patio

There are many different stages that aperson experiencing dementia will gothrough and it is very important to continueto provide quality of life at each stage. In ourcommunity, we have residents experiencingall different levels of dementia and we striveto find activities in which everyone canparticipate. The important thing toremember is to focus on what our residents

can do rather than want they cannot do. Our parachute activity is a great way to include allour residents. Those in the earlier stages get the exercise of moving the parachute andhave fun with making a game out of keeping balloons or beach balls inside the parachuteas it moves. For those in the later stages, we focus more on their senses. They feel thetexture of the parachute, see the colors moving, feel the cool breeze the parachute makes, hear the laughing and shouts of the other residents as we all play. Activities like thiscontribute to a happy and fulfilled resident and an overall successful day.

We are pleased to announce another addition to our team, as David Dutcher has taken over duties in the kitchen effectiveimmediately. David is no stranger to life in fast lane, as he served as an administrator at Carin Park in Fort Myers in hisprevious position. David, has great skill and willingness to utilize all the healthy ingredients and flavors so common to theSWFL lifestyle. Please welcome David to the team. Dave will be another asset to Coconut Point who cares deeply aboutour residents and our team.
