Bassai Dai Kata Kyokushin-Kan version*
Bassai Dai - To Penetrate a Fortress 抜塞大 Bassai Dai is most often translated as To Extract From a Fortress, meaning that one must exhibit the power and spirit required to break through an enemy's castle. The word Dai means Big, describing the kata's larger movements. Much of the bunkai focus on breaking the opponent's balance and defenses against grabbing attacks. Bassai Dai is characterised by repeated changing of the blocking arms to represent the feeling of shifting from a disadvantageous position to an advantageous one and repeated attacks such as the three consecutive Awase Tsuki represent penetrating a strong defence.
