I cannot believe that the purpose of life is to be happy. I think the purpose of life is to be useful, to be responsible, to be compassionate. It is, above all to matter, to count, to stand for something, to have made some difference that you lived at all. -Leo Rosten

Last week our own Sevena Baum brought her daughter, Victoria Bloodworth, to speak to us about the state of healthcare in the U.S. today. Victoria works for Blue Cross. She had some nice handouts and lots of interesting statistics. One of my favorites was the fact that 3 billion prescriptions were written last year. She quickly added that this number could be reduced significantly if Max Booke’s hip starts giving him less trouble in the near future.
There seemed to be two main themes to the future of medical care. The first, was patients taking more responsibility for their own welfare. This means being better educated about their health issues, and becoming a more selective shopper for health services. The second trend was for health consumers to pay for more of their care themselves. HSAs, or health savings accounts, were offered as a way to do that.
I don’t know about you, but I think I’m going to avoid getting sick.
(We’ve just got to improve security at our meetings. This is the second time these two have crashed and sat together at the head table)

Leigh Roberts offered us the Cliff Notes version of his life last week. I hope everyone was paying attention. I think there is going to be a quiz today.
