A ninety-eight bed acute care hospital, Bogalusa Medical Center (BMC) has a medical staff of primary and specialty physicians and multiple facilities to meet the healthcare needs of its patients.
The BMC surgery team is available twenty-four hours, seven days a week, providing services to several thousand patients annually.
Special Beginnings Family Center, BMC’s new state-of-the-art labor and delivery unit, has an estimated 200 births annually, filling a ten-year void in labor and delivery services for this area of the North Shore. It allows medical residents to receive invaluable, high-quality OB/GYN training and fulfills accreditation requirements for the BMC Rural Family Medicine Residency Program.
BMC has also expanded services in psychiatry, ophthalmology, imaging, cardiology, pediatrics, and pathology. It is a cytology processing center for other LSU hospitals.
BMC participates in the LSU Disease Management Program, which manages chronic diseases according to nationally accepted, evidence-based guidelines.
The BMC Memphis Street Outpatient Clinic has recognition status as a Physician Practice Connections—Patient Centered Medical Home by the NCQA. Having met rigorous NCQA requirements to receive this recognition, the clinic provides ongoing preventive and early intervention healthcare to patients and coordinates specialized care with BMC when patients require it.
BMC has seen a significant increase in the number of patients in the years after Hurricane Katrina. BMC has a dedicated staff as evidenced by a nursing turnover rate far below the national average, helping to maintain a tightly knit circle of caregivers who fulfill the BMC mission of treating their patients like family.

The Interim LSU Public Hospital (ILH) is the critical component in the provision of graduate medical education and quality healthcare in South Louisiana. A tertiary healthcare center, the ILH and its specialty and primary care clinics support the LSU and Tulane medical schools and their residency programs. Thousands of students from these two schools, the LSU schools of dentistry, nursing, and allied health, the Xavier University College of Pharmacy, and other nursing schools depend on ILH as their training site.
ILH community clinics bring quality healthcare to neighborhoods where many would forego healthcare because of no transportation or an inability to pay. These community clinics, all accredited by the NCQA as “Medical Homes,” offer comprehensive primary healthcare and coordinated access to specialty care.
The HIV Outpatient Program (HOP), a nationally recognized center for HIV healthcare, training, and research, and other specialty clinics complement the comprehensive and coordinated ILH network, which provides quality healthcare to anyone who needs it, the insured, underinsured, and uninsured.
ILH participates in the LSU Disease Management Program, which manages chronic diseases according to nationally accepted, evidence-based guidelines.
The LSU Level 1 Trauma Center, the only one in South Louisiana, provides care to all major trauma victims in New Orleans and its surrounding ten-parish area. The presence of a Level 1 trauma Center indicates that LSU is a premier provider of comprehensive healthcare services.
The trauma center provides optimal care for injured patients with full trauma-center staff, facilities, and services available twenty-four hours a day. The Greater New Orleans area relies exclusively on ILH for this highly specialized, comprehensive care.
Besides being an essential component of superior healthcare and a hallmark of a first-rate community, the LSU Level 1 Trauma Center attracts outstanding surgical residents for post-graduate training by ILH staff, who are nationally recognized and among the best in the nation.

Dr. Walter O. Moss Regional Medical Center (WOMRMC) is the only public hospital in the Lake Charles region providing preventive primary care and medical, surgical and psychiatric services to anyone in need, regardless of the ability to pay. The strong partnerships WOMRMC has with other area healthcare institutions also give its patients access to physical rehabilitation, obstetrics, and medical and radiation oncology services.
WOMRMC is a clinical education site for a number of institutions, contributing to the training of Louisiana’s future healthcare professionals. The Louisiana State Nurses Association approved the WOMRMC Education Department for provider status for continuing education, another way in which WOMRMC contributes to healthcare education and quality healthcare in the region.
WOMRMC participates in the LSU Disease Management Program, which manages chronic diseases according to nationally accepted, evidence-based guidelines.
WOMRMC Primary Care Clinic has recognition status as a Physician Practice Connections—Patient Centered Medical Home by the NCQA. Having met rigorous NCQA requirements to receive this recognition, the clinic provides ongoing preventive and early intervention healthcare to patients and coordinates specialized care with WOMRMC when patients require it.
With Joint Commission accreditation, WOMRMC consistently provides quality healthcare to many who otherwise would be without services. A core value of WOMRMC is quality services to everyone who enters its doors.

LSU’s University Hospital in Shreveport is a major medical center and the site of many innovations in medical care. This 459 bed facility is part of the LSU Health Sciences Center – Shreveport. It provides primary care to residents across the Shreveport- Bossier City metropolitan area and specialty care to persons across Louisiana, East Texas and South Arkansas. With experts across medical and surgical fields, advanced facilities and resources, the hospital is a leader in offering specialized care and services. It is a regional referral center for trauma and burn care, neurosurgery, cancer services, children’s health and other critical services. Well-known components include the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center, the Sleep Disorders Center, and Children’s Hospital of LSUHSCS.
Originally established in 1876 as the Charity Hospital in downtown Shreveport, it has undergone a series of expansions, relocations and name changes over the years. In 1953, it was moved to
its present location on the corner of Kings Highway and Linwood Avenue. It was in 1976 that the Louisiana Legislature affiliated it with the LSU System. The affiliation with the LSU School of Medicine at Shreveport has been successful, and great strides in patient care, education, research and public service have resulted. The hospital remains dedicated to caring for the needs of the underprivileged from across the area.
Committed to training future generations of healthcare providers, University Hospital is a training site for many medical, nursing and allied health programs. Home to graduate medical education programs for physicians across many specialties, it also serves as a clinical education site for students in the adjacent Schools of Medicine and Allied Health Professions. Leading edge clinical research occurs in many specialties at this medical center as well.

The LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans is the largest Health Sciences Center in the state and along with the LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport trains the majority of the state’s physicians. LSUHSC-NO students are Louisiana residents, and by offering a high quality, affordable education, LSUHSC-NO is helping to keep Louisiana’s best and brightest right here at home.
One of the first in the nation to incorporate patient simulation into the curriculum, LSUHSC-NO has driven the technology to unprecedented capability by developing patented software that overlays existing programs, providing much more realistic and robust training scenarios. As the only Louisiana designated Level I Comprehensive Education Institute and one of the few in the country, LSUHSC-NO uses simulation technology to train teams of medical professionals, improving patient safety and outcomes.
LSUHSC-NO has developed innovative educational programs to respond to work force needs. Addressing the nursing shortage, the Career Alternative RN
Education (CARE) Program fast tracks those with degrees in other disciplines to become RNs. The School of Dentistry is increasing the number of dental hygienists through tele-lectures. The School of Medicine developed one of the country’s most successful Rural Track programs to increase the number of primary care physicians practicing in rural areas.
In addition to staffing the LSU hospitals in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Bogalusa, Houma, Lake Charles, and Independence, LSUHSC-NO faculty take care of patients in every major hospital in the metropolitan New Orleans area, and faculty, residents, and fellows treat hundreds of thousands of patients each year in affiliated teaching hospitals and clinics throughout the state.
The LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans is a recognized leader in a number of research disciplines in a worldwide arena.
An enormously powerful economic engine, LSUHSC-NO generates thousands of primary and secondary jobs, and its annual economic impact pre-Katrina was in excess of a billion dollars.
