Overview Camp Bongkud is situated in the centre of a traditional Dusun community in central Sabah, on the edge of Mount Kinabalu National park, with the mountain forming an impressive backdrop. The camp itself consists of a number of traditional style longhouses built around a communal area and is literally in the middle of the community. The Dusun here are a mix of Christian and Muslim, who live harmoniously, each celebrating the other’s festivals and whilst poverty is not rife, life is still hard and traditional ways of life are being eroded and lost.

Outline ItineraryDay 1 – Arrive Kota Kinabalu and transfer to Community (Overnight Community Camp)Arrive in the state capital of Kota Kinabalu by midday. It is a 3-hour bus journey to our community camp. On arrival at the camp you will be welcomed by staff with refreshment. Before dinner the team will receive a full safety and orientation brief. The remainder of the day is a chance to relax and settle into the traditional style accommodation and get used to the local environment before a welcome dance performed by local school children after dinner. Day 2 – Cultural brief and traditional ways of life sessions (Overnight Community Camp)After breakfast, the morning is filled with sessions on traditional ways of life such as an introduction to local cooking and handicrafts as well as a chance to meet the community and see how they live. In the afternoon the team will be given a thorough briefing on the community project that they will work on the following day. BLD

Day 3 – Community project work/local attraction (Overnight Community Camp)Depending on progress on the project, today could see the team continuing where they left off the day before or perhaps learn about permaculture techniques and how we are putting them into practice in the camps. However, there is also scope for a visit to a local attraction like the Tip of Borneo, Poring Hot Springs or Kundasang WW2 War memorial. After the final dinner in camp, there might be the opportunity for the team to show off their newly discovered skills in the local dance or music. BLD

Day 4 – Day trip to Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary (Overnight Sandakan Hostel / Hotel)As a reward for the previous day’s hard work is the chance to visit the world renowned Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary. Here they take in and care for orphaned orangutans, and try to rehabilitate them back into the wild. No visit to Borneo would be complete without a visit to see these amazing creatures. The team will then get the chance to explore the historic town of Sandakan before returning to the hotel for a chance to refresh before a final meal to celebrate the achievments of the week so far. Day 5 – Fly to Kota Kinabalu and river cruise on the Kilias River (Overnight Fireflies Eco-camp)After flying across to Kota Kinabalu, the group will transfer to an eco-camp on the banks of the Klias river on the west coast of Sabah. On arrival they will have lunch and settle into their accommodation before heading out on a wildlife river cruise where they will see all sorts of wildlife including the strangely lovable Proboscis Monkey and even Crocodiles! In the afternoon there will be activities and traditional games and then after dinner there will be a night-time cruise to see the fantastic firefly displays. BLD

Day 6 – Transfer to Utan Paradise Jungle Camp (Overnight Utan Paradise Base Camp) After an early start and an early morning cruise on the river to see the wildlife that likes to rise early, the team will transfer to Utan Paradise Jungle Camp in the Crocker Range. On arrival the team will have lunch and settle into the dorm accommodation. In the afternoon the team will be taught some of the traditional jungle skills that the local people have used for hundreds of years including traditional traps. They will also be briefed on their jungle trek and shown how to erect their hammocks so that they can practise before they have to do it for real in the jungle camp the next night. BLD

Day 7 – Reforestation Project (Overnight Utan Paradise Base Camp) Today the team will help with the Utan Paradise reforestation project working either on expanding the nursery, collecting seeds and planting them out in the nursery or planting out the saplings that are ready. This work helps to ensure that important tree species that are missing from the areas of secondary forest are replaced providing food sources for animals as well as replacing hardwood trees. In the evening there will be an insect observation session whereby shining a bright light on a large white sheet the team can observe the many different nocturnal insects that are making all that noise in the jungle. Day 8 – Depart A final chance for souvenir shopping before departing from Kota Kinablu. B
