With the surprise attack on U.S. military facilities on Oahu

in the Hawaiian Islands on December 7, 1941, followed by

attacks on U.S. bases in the Philippine Islands, the United

States was thrust into the Second World War. This first lec-

ture addresses the Pearl Harbor attack and the first few

months of war as the U.S. struggled to recover from the loss

of the bulk of the U.S. Pacific Fleet and the Pacific air forces.

Part II: Miracle at Midway: Turning the Tide

In an attempt to establish lodgment only a thousand miles

from Pearl Harbor, as well as to lure out and destroy the

remaining U.S. Pacific Fleet, Admiral Isoroku Yamamota

launched an attack on Midway Island. This second lecture

addresses the planning and execution of the Battle of

Midway that turned the tide of the war in the Pacific.
