SONG TITLE: Enei – Just One Look
GENRE: Drum and bass
WHAT ARE THE CONVENTIONS OF MUSIC VIDEOS IN THIS GENRE?
Drum and bass is an incredibly niche audience and there aren’t a lot of music videos for it. Competitors such as Alix Perez, DRS & Ivy Lab have produced videos that are all relatively similar.
• Hand held camera • Black and white bursts • Jumpy • Cut to the beat • Non-linear narrative • Close ups • Slow motion

HOW ARE YOU GOING TO MEET THESE CONVENTIONS?
STYLE: I am not including an in depth linear narrative I am making my music video more interpretive so the audience have their own perception of the story being told. I will be using cutaways to make it visually pleasing as this is quite common in drum and bass videos. For example I will have my male character hitting a drum. This does not have a direct link to the plot but to me it represents him getting his anger out as the relationship he is currently in is hard. This sort of scene could mean something completely different to someone else which is what I am trying to go for. COSTUME: I am targeting a relatively young audience (18-25) so I will need to think carefully about costumes. I want my audience to be able to relate well to the characters in the production so by putting them in stylish clothes that this age group like, this will help the audience relate. For example I will dress the girl in harem pants, dungarees and tops labelled with record labels. For my male character I will dress him in Palace, Supreme and critical music clothes. I feel this will seriously relate to the audience, especially the drum and bass audience as these are the sorts of clothes they would wear themselves. LIGHTING: I want my production to be relatively dark throughout, I feel this will give it a sense of mystery. I am planning to have most scenes in black and white with bursts of colour when necessary. I am only using one key light which will make the lighting quite dramatic. This is seen in quite a few drum and bass
music videos as it is mysterious. For example in DRS – The View, the only lighting used in that is natural light. This is a similar effect I want in my production. LOCATIONS: The locations I will be using are:
• Car • Bedroom • Woods • Field
These locations I feel relate to the audience as younger adults enjoy being in slightly secluded places with their friends. As well as 18 year olds being relatively new to driving, positioning my actors in the car will relate to the audience as that is a place they enjoy. Driving gives my audience a sense of freedom. I need a variety of locations in this production as there is not a linear narrative. SHOT TYPES: I plan to incorporate a lot of close ups, I feel this will really portray the emotions of my characters. This is important in my production as the meaning of the song is quite upsetting for the girl and not for the guy. Hence why I need to portray this. Long shots will help me when I am shooting both characters. Especially the scene where they are walking towards one another as I need to showcase the distance between the two of them.
RESEARCH WHAT MUSIC VIDEOS HAVE YOU WATCHED TO RESEARCH YOUR
GENRE? IVY LAB – 20 QUESTIONS (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJBc0ej7myY ) Ivy lab is one of my main competitors and has a slightly more liquid drum and bass sound. In this music video it shows a lot of the conventions listed above. The entire video is in black and white and doesn’t really have any form of narrative. The video involves an elder woman singing and smoking in a darkened room. This makes the video very mysterious and makes the audience really question what is happening. As you can see in this screen grab it is very dark lighting. If you watch the video a lot of it is in slow motion. This is the effect I want in my production. The use of close ups really give us an insight into how this woman is feeling. She is obviously upset and stressed.
DRS – COUNT TO TEN (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bm5gB3Yk9hI) DRS is another one of my main competitors. He is an MC who offers a slightly more neuro sound. In this video ‘Count To Ten’ a lot of cutting to the beat and fast cuts have been used in order to match the atmosphere of drum and bass. The song I have chosen also has a relatively fast beat so I want to include this same technique. Parts of the video have been blurred out on purpose to give a jumpy feel.
HOW HAVE THESE VIDEOS INFLUENCED YOUR PRODUCTION?
These are two very popular songs in the drum and bass world and have had a lot of success. The use of slow motion in Ivy Lab’s – 20 questions works really well in terms of showcasing emotions. The use of black and white (also in this video) gives it a mysterious feel. This is what I want to do in my production as there is not a linear narrative. In the DRS video the cutting to the beat works well with the style of the song and makes it more exciting to watch. I will incorporate these techniques into my music video
LYRICS
Just one look is all it takes To make me fall, at your feet Just one touch is enough, to make me weak I’m in too deep (Instrumental) Oohh (Instrumental) Just one look is all it takes To make me fall, at your feet Just one touch is enough, to make me weak I’m in too Just one look is all it takes To make me fall at your feet Just one touch is enough to make me weak I’m in too deep (Instrumental)
MEANING OF THE SONG DOES THE SONG HAVE A MEANING? The song is about a relationship between two people. The female is singing therefore it is apparent it is her story. She explains that she is very much in love with her partner and she fell for them instantly (just one look is all it takes to make me fall at your feet). It is apparent that she is more into the relationship than her partner which is an issue (I’m in too deep). We can tell even by the way she is singing that she is deeply in love. However she may not be receiving the same love back. HOW WILL YOUR VISUALS RELATE TO THE SONG? I plan to showcase the love between the two of them by having them hold hands etc. But when they are by themselves it is a different story. The girl will be upset about how much she likes him whereas the guy will not even bat an eyelid to the fact he is in a ‘casual relationship’. This will be shown by my male character being care free and having fun with my female character upset. There will be a split screen to directly showcase what each person is doing when they are not together.
