Thefilmhasbeencriticisedinsomequartersforimitatingtheclosingshotsofthe1947filmratherthanremainingtruetothenovel.²Attheendofthenovel,RoseisonherwaytolistentoPinkie’srecordingandtoface‘theworsthorrorofall’.Thereisnoreprieve.Therecordgettingstuckonthewords‘Iloveyou’isnotinthenovelandwasintroducedbyGreene(whowrotethescreenplay)aftersomepressurefromthecensor.
