New Elements for 2020 Although brook trout populations are present throughout Québec, they are not as healthy as they appear, as shown by the decline in the quality of the fishing experience over the last 30 years. To restore the situation, the new Management Plan proposes a variety of actions designed to protect and increase the natural productivity of populations while adapting harvests to stock levels.

Other steps • Reduce mortality rates among released fish by raising anglers’ awareness of catch-and-release best practices.
• Provide better protection for habitats in forests and on private (urban and agricultural) land.
• Optimize the habitat management strategy by developing environmental assessment tools that can be used to prioritize actions and maximize the success of the steps taken.
• Review the method used to determine quotas in structured wildlife territories, to ensure that they are consistent with natural productivity levels.
• Raise anglers’ awareness of the importance of declaring catches in structured wildlife areas.
• Protect high-yield populations, including allopatric populations (where the brook trout is the only species present) that provide an outstanding fishing experience.
• Continue to prepare and implement stocking plans for ZECs and wildlife reserves.
