“Life was never the same again.”
After disaster, trauma remains
…staggering social and economic costs
What can be done?
•Advanced preparation
•Early intervention
•Post-disaster intervention
A few statistics from 2009:
224 weather related disasters, affecting 55 million people
3 million people were affected by man-made disasters
Statistics from 2009
• In the US, 91.4% of disasters were weather-related between January and November
• FEMA declared 107 emergencies and disasters in the US, of which 52 were major disasters
• Internationally, an estimated 25 million people were forced from their homes due to threat of violence
Disasters create vulnerable populations that need health and mental health services
Children suffer mental illnesses after disasters too
Mental health problems can be transmitted within families
PTSD affects between 12-16% of affected populations, including children
Whole communities need help
Disaster health professionals need to be trained to deal with crisis…
…and with mental health problems of disaster victims
Consider the problems of those refugees who cannot go home
