Business in Development - new avenues for complementarity and collaboration Vienna University of Economics and Business, 30th June 2014 1
Welcome
1 Business in Development – new avenues for complementarity and collaboration
With financial flows of private investments now exceeding official development assistance, businesses have naturally become ever more important partners in shaping and implementing the new post-2015 global development agenda. At the same time, the debate on measuring impacts of business operations in developing countries has entered the boardrooms of many companies. Yet they often remain difficult to capture. Measuring business impacts on development however becomes critical for effective engagement and collaboration of the private sector.
We at the Institute for Managing Sustainability were pleased to host an international symposium dealing with these topics at the Vienna University for Economics and Business. We are particularly grateful to our co-hosts: the Austrian Development Agency (ADA) and the Austrian Institute for Collaboration in Development Projects (ICEP). The symposium brought together representatives from academia, business, civil society and the donor community with the following objectives:
• To engage in a dialogue with key actors on new avenues for intersectoral collaboration for global sustainable development;
• To explore potentials for synergies and complementarity between business and official development assistance; and
• To discuss impact assessment beyond sustainability reporting as an essential component of fostering a more prominent role of business in development.
The symposium also linked up with the GLOBAL VALUE project coordinated by the Institute for Managing Sustainability. GLOBAL VALUE is one of the largest EU-funded research projects to date addressing business impacts on global sustainable development. We cordially invite all participants to stay connected and continue discussions in the context of the GLOBAL VALUE Expert Crowd.
We are grateful to our international project partners and the renowned international speakers who contributed their expertise and experience to this event. We hope that these proceedings will be a useful resource for participants wishing to recall specific points of discussion as well as for interested parties wishing to engage with the topic of “Business in development – new avenues for complementarity and collaboration”.

3 Welcome address
Michael Meyer is the Vice-Rector for Human Resources, member of the academic board of the Professional MBA Program for Social Management and member of the board of the Competence Centre for NPOs and Social Entrepreneurship at WU Vienna. He also heads the Institute for Non-profit Management.
“The topic discussed in the symposiums fits perfectly with WU’s mentality. The new open campus without walls and fences drives research, teaching and operations. Due to the financial and ecological crisis we have to rethink economy as well as rethink business contribution to development. The Institute for Managing Sustainability has been instrumental for achieving this at WU with its 15 years of experience in the acquisition and implementation of international research projects in the areas of CSR, resource efficiency or impact assessment.”
4 Opening panel
4.1 Martin Ledolter, Austrian Development Agency
Martin Ledolter is the Managing Director of the Austrian Development Agency. He holds PhD in Law and an LL.M. from Columbia University. Mr. Ledolter is a legal expert who has spent most of his professional life in politics, notably serving as a senior political advisor to the Vice Chancellor and Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Cabinet of the Austrian Foreign Ministry in the areas of development cooperation, social and health affairs.
“Ten years ago a conference about the role of business in sustainable development would not have taken place. Nowadays, development cooperation includes many actors in order to achieve global change. The new post-2015 global development agenda is an opportunity of growing markets, while proactively engaging the private sector in developing countries.”
4.2 Bernhard Weber, Institute for Collaboration in Development Projects (ICEP)
Bernhard Weber is the co-founder and Managing Director of the Institute for Collaboration in Development Projects (ICEP). ICEP is a non-profit association headquartered in Vienna with the goal to effectively contribute to global poverty alleviation. Mr. Weber holds a PhD in Business Studies from Vienna University of Economics and Business.
“Businesses are the key driver to foster development. Hence, the most successful companies have to be involved in fighting poverty. Companies have made huge progress in terms of responsibility. The challenge lies in shaping policies accordingly and improving the framework of business in developing countries.”

There have been many challenges in measuring and reporting impacts. Measurement has to focus on few practical and pertinent indicators derived from the goals of the partnership itself.”
