To Meet a Superstar
I recently took a quick road trip to Houston with a priest friend. We left Sunday after the morning Masses, and we drove home early Monday morning. It was such a quick trip that most of our parishioners didn’t even know we were gone! The purpose of the road trip was to see a musician we followed when we were in college. I was sharing with an older gentleman that we were going to see a “virtuoso” guitarist. He said, “I could listen to classical guitar all day long.” When I clarified that I was going to see a heavy metal virtuoso guitarist, he responded, “I would rather stick a hot poker in my eye!”
I haven’t been to a concert in years. Some things have changed, for example, there is no smoking allowed inside the House of Blues. What hasn’t changed is the experience of being in the presence of a gifted artist. Seeing someone on stage with an almost supernatural aura from the lights and smoke stirs a bit of emotions. You can’t compare the experience of hearing someone live to hearing them on the radio or in your car.
This road trip came to my mind because of the Gospel reading for this Sunday. I can’t imagine what the Transfiguration meant for Peter, James, and John. They get to see two heroes of their faith. Moses and Elijah weren’t like so many celebrities today whose fame only lasts for a generation. For hundreds of years, an entire nation had lived by the words that Moses wrote. For hundreds of years, this same nation was anticipating the return of Elijah who would precede the coming of the Messiah. These two were superstars of another level.
On top of that experience, the three Apostles see Jesus who has a literal supernatural aura. He isn’t bathed in light from a concert stage, He radiates light from His face and clothes. He isn’t surrounded by the smoke from a fog machine, He is covered by a cloud of the Holy Spirit. He isn’t introduced by an emcee at a concert hall, but by the voice of God the Father.
The Church gives us this Gospel to reflect on important truths: our Lord is with us on our Lenten journey. To Him belong the power and the glory. Not only is our Lord on our side, but the holy men and women who’ve gone before us. I can only imagine what it will be like to meet Moses and Elijah in the kingdom to come! I pray that this weekend’s readings may strengthen you on your Lenten journey.
Peace,Fr. Matthew
