CONFERENCEANNOUNCED

for the Future of

Home Technology

A recent study of more than4000 consumers in the USA,UK, France and Germany, hasfound that 75% of connectedTV owners are using their TV to connect to the internet, with connection rates highestin France - at 71% - and lowestin the UK, at 56%.

This is just one of the findings

contained within the Futuresource

‘Living with Digital’ report which

impacts on the CI marketplace.

The rapid expansion of internet

connectivity has radically changed the

way that consumers live their lives,

carrying out interactions and functions

on the move that were previously

confined to the home or office.

Watching TV and movies and playing

games on the move have all become

commonplace, while online shopping,

web surfing and social networking

have become significantly more

popular as the range and ownership

of connected devices has expanded.

The survey also shows that the most

popular uses for connected TVs are

watching catch-up TV and YouTube

videos and streaming films via online

channels including Lovefilm and

Netflix. Though at 40%, 24% and 23%

respectively, social networking sites,

streaming music and personal media

libraries are found to be used

frequently.

CEDIA recognises the value of such

well-grounded and detailed market

research in helping its members

understand the future landscape

of residential custom installation.

We have recently appointed

international market research

company, Parks Associates, to

conduct significant and unique

industry research in key territories

within the UK, Europe and Africa. continued on page 2

This extensive research project will

comprise two defined parts. Commencing

in July 2012, Parks Associates will carry

out primary research into the U.K., which

is the single biggest CI market in the

region. This will involve an industry-wide

survey to establish the size and scope of

the sector highlighting areas of growth

and opportunities. Results will be made

available in October 2012. CEDIA has also

engaged Parks Associates to undertake a

secondary research project which will

map the scale of residential custom

installation in France, Germany, Italy,

Spain and South Africa, countries where

CEDIA membership is expanding.

“This research will help ensure our

members, prospective members and

industry professionals can assess the

business opportunity in CI and stay in

touch with the market’s expansion in

these key territories,” says Wendy

Griffiths, Executive Director of CEDIA

Region 1. “This is the first time an

industry research project has taken place

on this scale in our region and the results

we gain will add value for our members,

helping to shape their own growth going

forward.”

6 COMMUNICATES Your industr y, your voice…news from CEDIA

Who are you?

Darren Bown

What’s your company and where is itbased?

IMP, Based in Royston Hertfordshire

How did you get into the industry?

We got into the industry through our

supplier Vimar SpA, who is an Italian

manufacturer of decorative wiring

devices and automation systems. We

wanted to be involved and support the

UK CI community.

What’s your favourite film?

Goodfellas. It has some fantastic

characters and actors with a great

storyline. It reminds me of my youth,

watching the film with friends.

What’s your favourite album?

Definitely Maybe by Oasis. Defined my

youth and teenage years.

What’s your favourite project and why?

Sunseeker 40M Yacht – ‘Tanvas’. Our first

Vimar automation project in the UK, which

to this day is still going strong all over the

world. I spent many a sleepness night

wondering about the problems we would

encounter but all went off perfectly!

Which custom installation technology doyou consider the most important todayand why?

Clearly the introduction of mobile

devices and cloud based services. The

possibilities and technologies here are

moving so quickly that who knows

where it will end! The thought of

controlling my lighting from my phone

only a few years ago for example was

either an impossible dream or for the

super rich!

How long have you been a CEDIAmember?

18 months.

What do your consider your biggestachievement as a CEDIA member?

Gaining CEU accreditation for our Vimar

‘By-me’ Training Course. Rewarding our

installers for attending our course in order

to develop their knowledge base and

market to their clients. A ‘Win Win’ for

everyone.

What would it mean for you to win aCEDIA Award?

Winning a CEDIA award for me would

mean recognition and respect among my

peers of the quality and professionalism

IMP offer.

What’s the biggest issue for custominstallation businesses today and howcan they deal with it?

I would suggest keeping abreast of the

latest technologies and products and

future proofing projects as much as

possible. The only way to deal with this is

to keep your ear to the ground and

network with other like minded

individuals.

If there was one thing you could changein the industry what would it be?

I would like to see more interaction with

the general public and remove the

perception that automation is for the elite.

If you weren’t in the custom installationsector, what would you like to be doingand why?

Sailing around the world in an Oyster

Sailing Yacht with my family, visiting all the

far flung remote destinations around the

world. Being able to escape civilisation,

turn the phone off, relax and enjoy my

family.
