Celebrate! May is a glorious month! The Lord has blessed our church community so
much! On May 1, we will gather to celebrate Fr. Bur’s first worship service in
his role as Assistant Rector at St. Barnabas. His sermon, “With God All Things
Are Possible,” will be a fitting initiation to his ministry among us. We are so
thankful that he is here with us.
There will be one service at 10:00 a.m. in the Parish Hall. Following the ser-
vice, the congregation will go outside for the Parish photograph, while the
Men’s Breakfast Group sets up the tables for lunch. After the photo, we’ll en-
joy a light meal provided by the Vestry. Don’t miss this opportunity to welcome
Fr. Bur and to worship with the entire congregation. With all three services
worshipping together, you’re sure to see new faces.
Don’t forget that the month of May has been set aside for ALL committees of
the church to meet and if you wish a vestry member or church staff member to
be present, please let them know. Also, the Book of Remembrance is in place
and if you or someone you know has gifted the church with an item in memory
or honor of a loved one, please let the church office or Pris Williams know.
If you haven’t noticed some changes in the church office area, please drop by
and familiarize yourself with the new arrangement. Rachael and Carol are in
new places and Fr. Bur has his own office space. The Conference Room has
been moved a little further down the hallway and some new construction will
be taking place.
I want to give a special “Thank You” to Jack Oates, our Junior Warden. Jack
works very diligently on taking such good care of our church and its property.
He changes light bulbs, fixes leaks, takes care of leaking hot water heaters,
getting bids for construction projects and oversees the projects, etc……it is just
amazing what this man does and the love with which he does it. Thank you,
Jack!
Blessings,
Vickie

On April 9, the Daughters of the King participated in a Morning
of Reflection led by Bonnie Cassello. She began with Jesus’
words, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and
with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your
strength.”
Cassello then expanded on her theme of “Whole-Hearted Liv-
ing” by defining the heart as the “organ of Divine Perception,
the place of compassion and connection with others.“ She gave
examples of how the defensive strategies of our bodies and
minds can prevent us from responding to life’s challenges with
an open heart. It is possible to counteract that tendency by
prayerfully questioning the reasons for the choices we make so
that we can respond with love and compassion.

Troop 137 Returns to St. Barnabas
Boy Scout Troop 137 has returned to the St. Barnabas campus after a period of meeting offsite.
Gayne C. Young has taken over the responsibilities as Scoutmaster. Gayne says, “I'm very excited
to bring Troop 137 back to St. Barnabas and look forward to expanding programs, and to be a part
of a program that has guided young men for more than a century.”
Troop 137 meets each Tuesday from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Boys ages 11 to 18 are
encouraged to attend. Contact Gayne to attend. Adult assistance in any form is always welcome.
Contact Gayne at 830-285-1011 or at [email protected].
Whole-Hearted Living
Cassello called us to be ministers of Presence— to be here and now with undefended minds, open
hearts and centered awareness in our bodies.
You Are Encouraged. . . The Texas Water Mission is a mission of the Diocese of West Texas that provides water wells to villag-
es in rural areas of Honduras. As you probably know, Saint Barnabas has funded a well that will be
drilled next January, God willing. In addition to the well, TWM also provides health and hygiene train-
ing for people in the local area, and teaches bible school classes for the children.
A group of missionaries from Saint Barnabas is forming to go to Honduras while the project is under-
way. You are encouraged to sign up for the trip. January is a long way off, but it’s not too early to
start thinking about it. The trip will be from January 19 to 26. We will stay at Zamorano, an agricultur-
al university in El Paraiso. It’s comfortable, and very safe. We’ll travel, work and pray together. The trip
is a very uplifting experience.
For planning purposes, the trip costs about $1,400 per person, and you will need a passport. More
information will be available as we get closer to January, but in the mean time you are encouraged to
save the dates on your calendar. Contact David Spencer (512-557-6923) or Johnny Gorden (830-285
-7867) for more information.
What a difference a year makes!

New Directories Ready on May 1! Directories are not only handy references for current use, but valuable documents for church history.
Thirty years ago St. Barnabas published its first pictorial directory. These current members were all
part of St. Barnabas in 1986: Finn Alban, Shirley and Fred Crooks, Gail Eager, Bob Gates, Maggie
and Mike Gillespie, Mary and Jim Hatchette, Barbara Hayden, Fran Hubbard, Amy and Charlene Mil-
ler, Samjit and Somsee Pornphet, Joanie Harris, Pat Reese, Julie Roseberry, Will, Sandie and Bill
Smallwood, Diane and Ray Smith, Jack and Bernie Swanzy, Jani Schofield, Helen McDonald, Nancy
Wareing, Jenny Wieser, Sandy and Mike Wuest.
Thank You to the Sunday Morning Readers!
This month, the Stewardship committee would like to recognize our Sunday
morning scripture readers (aka Lectors). These volunteers share their tal-
ent with us every Sunday at all three services. To give you some insight in-
to what this team goes through, have you ever had to stand up in front of
our congregation and speak? (And try to pronounce Melchizedek or
Belteshazzar!) You’ll know what a different perspective it gives you.

Balance Sheet: There was a decrease of about $7K. The following is the breakdown by area:
Monthly Operations -$8.0K (explained below)
Moms Morning Off +$0.3K (explained below)
Funds +$2.0K
Investment increases in the Endowment and Columbarium Funds ($4.2K)
Property Repairs (-$2.3K)
Prepaid Pledges -$2.4K
Significant activity from funds were as follows; Benevolence (+$0.8K), Outreach (+$0.4K), Rector Dis-
cretionary (-$0.8K)
Monthly Operations: Overall there was a deficit of $8K this month versus a budgeted deficit of
-$1.1K. Income was under budget by $1.4K due to pledge income being lower than budgeted. Ex-
penses were over budget by $5.6K. The largest overage was personnel (-$3.6K). This was a three
payroll month and we made a quarterly health insurance payment of $2.8K for the rector. (Budget is
$1.1K/month.) The personnel overage would have been larger except for the fact that we have budg-
eted for our new assistant , but he is not being paid yet. The other overage ( $2.1K) was in property
maintenance (grounds, organ maintenance, and property repairs.) The YTD balance is a +$18.2K
versus a budgeted -$3.2K. Things are looking good.
MMO: MMO had a small surplus of $300, even with a three—payroll month. Enrollment is at capacity
with 40 children and 10 teachers. The YTD balance is a positive $6.8K.
Year-Round Stewardship
“When I moved to Fredericksburg 18 years ago and was no longer working full-time, I wanted to try to
deepen my relationship with God and to find a more meaningful way to live. Father Dugat, the Assisting
Priest at St. Barnabas, suggested that I sign up for EfM, which I did. This program provided a theologi-
cal education in a small group setting but more importantly helped me to develop a sustaining spiritual-
ity, to integrate my beliefs and behavior, and to nurture the call to serve others. EfM provided a sound
foundation for life going forward.”
Steve Neale
“EfM can be the beginning of your most incredible adventure- Learning about yourself- and liking what
you find out!”
Fred Grimes
“EfM has been, and continues to be, an invaluable tool that is helping me develop my own perspective
on the Bible. This course enables me to better understand the entire witness of our Bible…where it
came from, how it evolved, who had influence in the “production” of what we call our Holy Book. Only
when we know these things can we discern meaning from individual chapters and verses.”
Molly Martin
Barbara Johnson uses this from Catherine Marshall to help tell what EfM means to her: “We must seek
out mature Christian friends with whom we can share questions, problems and the joys of discovery.”
The Education for Ministry (EfM) program is from the Beecken Center of the School of Theology at the
University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee. Published texts and essays provide the primary
knowledge content in the study of the Christian tradition. “Through study, prayer and reflection, EfM
helps participants move toward a new understanding of the fullness of God’s kingdom as they better
apprehend the connections between their faith and their lives.”
We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.
T.S. Eliot’s Four Quarters
St. Barnabas’Church is recruiting those interested in finding out more about EfM beginning Fall 2016.
Day and time for our gatherings will be determined by the members of the group. Free childcare is
available upon request. The deadline for registering is Friday, June 3, 2016.
Please contact Debbie Gorden (830-285-7668) for more information or to schedule a time for a one-on-
one discussion.

Please continue to check out the St. Barnabas website at stbarnabasfbg.org and also our diocesan
website at dwtx.org. Both have useful information about the activities of our church and diocese.
The Diocese of West Texas web site has a monthly calendar of events, news from Episcopal schools
and churches in our diocese, as well as information about Camp Capers, Mustang Island and our
camp in Colorado. The section called “Spiritual Formation” contains various studies for spiritual
enrichment.
