Cellular Energy Study Guide
All cells and organisms need energy. Humans get this energy by eating food. Plants get their
energy from the sun. In this unit we explored the two processes that make usable energy for
all eukaryotic organisms.

Photosynthesis:
a. Plants are able to capture light energy from the SUN and change it into FOOD through a
process called PHOTOSYNTHESIS
b. The food that plants make supplies them with ENERGY and also becomes a source of
energy for the organisms that eat the plants.
c. During PHOTOSYNTHESIS plant cells use the energy in SUNLIGHT to make food called
GLUCOSE from carbon dioxide and WATER.
d. Photosynthesis takes place in the CHLOROPLASTS in plant cells.
e. The equation: fill one out with words and one with chemical symbols
CARBON DIOXIDE + WATER + SUNLIGHT GLUCOSE + OXYGEN
6 CO2 + 6H2O + LIGHT ENERGY C6H12O6 + 602
Cellular Respiration:
a. The food you eat has to be broken down so that the energy it contains can be converted
into a form your cells can use.
b. Most organisms, such as HUMANS use cellular respiration to obtain ENERGY from
food.
c. In the cells of eukaryotes, cellular respiration takes place in the MITOCHONDRIA
d. Equations for cellular respiration: fill one in with words and one in with chemical symbols
Fermentation:
a. When cells cannot get the OXYGEN they need to produce ATP by cellular respiration, the
process of FERMENTATION takes over.
b. There are TWO major types of fermentation.
c. The first type is in your MUSCLES. It produces LACTIC ACID which contributes to
muscle fatigue after strenuous activity.
d. The second type of fermentation occurs in certain types of bacteria and yeasts.
The gas produced by yeast cells in fermentation cause BUBBLES of CARBON
DIOXIDE to form in bread and make the bread RISE.
You also need to study the following:
The relationship between photosynthesis and the health
of the planet.
The interdependent relationship between photosynthe-
sis and cellular respiration.
GLUCOSE + OXYGEN CARBON DIOXIDE + WATER+ ATP
C6H12O6 + 602 6 CO2 + 6H2O + ATP
