Certification Programs
Introduction
Each year the University updates this list of successful graduates from
its Certification programs.
The purpose of this list is to:
Identify those therapists who passed a clinical certification and
have remained current in continuing professional education
Assist with referrals within the physical therapy and medical
professions
Assist with the formation of study groups and networks
Recognize those who have reached standards of competency
through our programs
We have long held that continuing education should be structured
toward a meaningful goal. Thus, in 1981, when a group of therapists
who had completed the University’s (then the Institute of Physical
Therapy’s) manual therapy seminars asked to be examined, the
faculty agreed and Certification began.
Certification is designed to offer a series of seminars, which
culminate in a comprehensive examination consisting of written, oral
and practical testing to define competency in a chosen field.
Certification is an integral part of the process for acquiring either the
Post-Professional Master of Health Science (MHSc) or the
transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT).
Certification requires completion of the required seminars either as a
structured continuing education process or as part of one of our post-
professional degree programs. Taking the home study courses for
graduate credit is not required for Certification, although taking them
for credit toward a post-professional degree is recommended for
maximum educational benefit.
Mission Statement for Certification Process
The mission of the University of St. Augustine (USA) Certification
Process is to develop a post-professional expertise level of knowledge

and skills based on a particular clinical specialty area. By attending a
series of seminars and completion of a written, oral, and practical
examination, the student will have demonstrated a safe level of
competency in the specialty area according to the standards
established by USA.
Certification Review and Exam
Certification is a six-day process consisting of a 5-day Review Course
that provides opportunity for reviewing and updating the contents of
each of the seminars leading to Certification. On the fifth day, a
written exam is given, followed by a series of oral and practical
examinations. The standard sought is the safe application of
advanced clinical skills in the areas tested.
Registration
A therapist may apply to take the Review/Certification Course,
provided he/she has taken all the prerequisite seminars required for
the desired Certification prior to the Certification exams.
Results are confidential. Only the names of those who pass are listed
as having taken part. Not even those present would know if a
candidate completed all of the test components. Some come for the
week purely for the value of review. Some have taken the review
twice or more before taking the exams. For those who fail to
complete all of the components of the Certification process, the
University makes arrangements for them to be retested at various
locations throughout the country, convenient to the candidate and
instructor.
Note: Early application is recommended. The Certification refund
policy is designed to discourage last minute withdrawal.
Process
To earn each Certification, a therapist must attend seminars totaling at
least 25 days, culminating in a weeklong review and examination
process.

Use of the letters MTC, STC, PCC and CFC
As of December 1991, the University approved the use of the letters MTC on
letterhead, professional cards, and other appropriate uses to indicate
University Certification in Manual Therapy. The school recognized the
proliferation of letters after the names of physical therapists and introduced
this step with some hesitancy. Subsequent introduction of the letters STC,
PCC and CFC have been approved to indicate certification in Sports
Physical Therapy, Primary Care and Cranio-Facial respectfully.
In order to maintain use of the certification letters, the University requires
evidence of continuing professional development. Over a 24-month period,
the therapist is expected to maintain either full or part-time clinical practice
and meet one or more of the following activities:
30 hours (3.0 CEU) of continuing education attendance every 2
years
publication of article in peer-reviewed journal
completion and passing of ABPTS certification examination
post-professional degree coursework (3 credits over 24 months)
presentation (platform or poster) of research project
development and/or teaching of a seminar
development and/or teaching of a rehabilitation-related course in
a degree-granting program
Keeping the List Current
Every two years we mail requests for address correction and evidence of
continuing professional education courses taken during the past twenty-four
month period. If the requested form is returned, the complying therapist will
be listed with his or her current address on the following pages. If evidence
of professional development experiences during the past twenty-four months
is reported, the appropriate initials will be added after the complying
therapist’s name. Addresses listed are the most current in our records. Keep
us informed of your current addresses.
