In addition to the insecurity spilling over from the con�icts in Darfur and the Central African Republic, and the inter-ethnic and political tensions within Chad,1 the country is facing an impending
food security and nutrition crisis.2
Chad: Violence and Food Insecurity (May 2010)
Food InsecurityLow and erratic rainfall during the 2009-2010 cropping season has severely a�ected cereal production and negatively impacted the availability of pasture for livestock.2

Spillover from violence in Central African Rep.Background: Fighting between rebels and government forces, complicated by ethnic divisions and disputes over cattle, has pushed growing numbers of refugees into Chad and other neighbouring countries.7
Today: The instability continues at the border. In April, clashes between the army and rebel groups in the Central African Republic forced 1,100 civilians to �ee into Chad.8
Internal Con�ictInsecurity due to armed opposition to the Chadian Government, inter-ethnic tensions over access to land and natural resources and banditry targeting the local population, refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs) and humanitarian workers continues to be a chronic problem.1
Background: Violence �ared in Darfur in 2003 with several rebel groups taking up arms against the Government as they accused authorities of neglecting the region. At least 4.7 million residents of Darfur have been a�ected by the con�ict, with a majority of them living as internally displaced persons (IDPs) or as refugees in neighbouring Chad.5
Today: Although there are stable areas within Darfur and military activities have diminished, it is unlikely that refugees in Chad will be able to return home in the near future. The presence of a large refugee population is having a growing impact on the socio-economic situation and the depletion of natural resources.6
