TOM PERFREMENTBE IN CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

WHAT DO CHEMICAL ENGINEERS DO?Chemical engineers design, create and optimise the systems and equipment used in chemical, industrial, biological and environmental processes. They produce a range of materials, from fuels and fertilisers to processed foods, beer and wine, polymers, and pharmaceuticals.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIESYou could work in water treatment and recycling,

environmental management, energy and

petrochemical industries, research, from molecular

level up to full heavy-industry scale. Chemical

engineers may be involved in the manufacture and

commercialisation of products such as

nanomaterials, energy, food and clean water, or in

designing systems and processes to manage

environmental impacts.

“I was drawn towards the numerical, problem solving nature of engineering, yet it was my interest in chemistry and the ability of chemical engineers to tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges, which led me to choose the ‘universal engineering’ field

– chemical engineering. Undertaking a chemical engineering degree at UNSW has already provided me with priceless skills and I am looking forward to a stimulating and rewarding career.”

CHEMICAL ENGINEERING Chemical engineering bridges the study of the

chemical and physical sciences with engineering.

The major areas of chemical engineering activities

are: the design and development of chemical

processes and equipment; optimisation and control

of industrial operations; plant operation and

management; and environmental management and

pollution control. Management, critical analysis and

economics are very important components of the

undergraduate training.

So what's this degree all about?

Chemical engineers are some of the most flexible and

highly employable graduates, working across many

industries. This degree not only provides students with

valuable technical skills but also analytical and problem-

solving skills to help them work effectively as part of any

team. Take this degree alone or you could combine it with

a second degree.

RECOMMENDED KNOWLEDGEThere are no prerequisites but you’ll be at an advantage if

you have studied HSC Mathematics Extension 1 or 2,

Chemistry, Physics and Engineering Studies. If you are

unsure about your level of knowledge please contact us.

Bridging Courses are available – check out our website for

more information.

INDUSTRIAL EXPERIENCEWe love to produce graduates who are ready to hit the

ground running, so we make it a compulsory part of their

degree to complete at least 60 days of approved industrial

experience. Students need to find their own industrial

training places within Australia or overseas and are given

the option to combine study with their industrial placement

in fourth year.

PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITIONThe BE (Hons) in Chemical Engineering is professionally

accredited by both Engineers Australia and the Institution of

Chemical Engineers (IChemE).
