According to climate model projections:
• Temperature rises are expected between 1°C and 3°C in a moderate scenario (B2) and between 2°C and 4°C in a severe scenario (A2) across the country, at the end of the century.

Chile, a country vulnerable to climate change
• Rainfall patterns will change from north to south , resulting in water shortage especially in the central part of the country where 70% of the total population is living and in water abundance in the southern part of Chile. • Glaciers, which act as strategic water reserves, will continue to retreat. • Snow storage capacity in the mountain areas will decrease because the
increasing temperature will shift the snow-line to higher altitudes.

Climate change impacts and policies
2008: The Government of Chile is taking concrete steps to promote
adaptation to the effects of climate change in different sectors.
2010: Chile becomes the first South American country to join the OECD.
Creation of the Ministry of Environment (+ Climate Change Office)
1994: Chile ratifies the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate
Change (UNFCCC) and the Kyoto Protocol.

Proposed adaptation actions to climate change in forestry,
agriculture and livestock : examples
Research and innovation: • Changes in the calendar of crop seeds to minimize climate change risks. • Reduction of heat stress on crops through the use of appropriate mechanical or biological
(bushes, trees) protection. • Studies on the viability of the construction of small water dams in the dry areas of Chile. • Studies on the improvement of the irrigation systems in Chile´s central valleys. • Research on the selection of crops especially adapted to higher temperature and droughts. • Development of precision technology to improve the efficiency of the irrigation systems for
crops with high water demand.
Improve competitiveness: • Adaptation of the agricultural insurance system to climate change events. • Creation of a national program of subsidies for the efficient use of water irrigation.
Transparency and market access: • Improve and expand the credit system for the agriculture and forestry sector.
Promote economic, social and environmental sustainability • Development of a monitoring system for changes in the potential of agricultural production.
