Pillars of Holiness: Part I – JUSTICE
Continued.
The essence of holiness is Love. Not any ordinary love,
but the indwelling of the Holy Spirit who is the Love of
the Father and the Son personified. It is the indwelling
of the Holy Spirit, whom we received at Baptism, that
makes us holy. We call this objective holiness. We are
a holy people created in the Divine Image and recreated
in the Divine Life. This Divine Life of God is the Love
of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
As was said in an earlier column, the virtue of Justice is
a pillar of holiness. We cannot be holy without it.
Sure, we may be baptized and in the state of Grace
(objectively Holy, but God wants us to be “perfected as
our Heavenly Father is perfect.” Since our holiness
consists of not only being created in the image of God,
but also being recreated to share in the very life of God,
we must show justice to our neighbor. We cannot love
God and hate our neighbor.
What do we owe our neighbor in justice? Again, this
has been made very clear to us. “You shall not Kill,
You shall not commit Adultery, You shall not steal,
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor,
you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, you shall not
covet your neighbor’s goods.” Obviously, these are the
last six of the Ten Commandments. And, of course, you
understand that they mean much more than what is at
face value. For example, “You shall not kill” also
means you shall not abuse your body with drugs or al-
cohol. It also forbids actions that can cause scandal to
others and “kill” the life of Grace in them. “You shall
not commit adultery” also forbids any sexual relations
before marriage with anyone – NO MATTER HOW
MUCH YOU THINK YOU LOVE THEM. One last
example: “You shall not steal” forbids wasting time on
the Job at the employer’s expense, or the employer not
paying a just wage. In essence, Justice to our neighbor
consists in treating our neighbor as we would want them
to treat us. When we treat others with justice, not simp-
ly because we have to, but because we truly love them
as ourselves, we are well on the way to holiness, BUT
we are not there yet.
Justice is giving what is owed to someone else. We
have to do what is just under pain of sin, and often
times very serious (mortal) sin. Being just is doing our
duty, no more and no less. Our Lord calls those who
simply do their duty “useless servants.” We must be
just in order to remain in God’s grace and remain
“objectively” holy. Although this will keep us on the
path to Heaven, it does not guarantee entrance through
the front door. If we have done our duty, but made a
mess of ourselves in the process, we may have to enter
through the back door and get cleaned up in the mud
room (purgatory), or as our Lord put it, serve table be-
fore we sit down to eat. Rather, the holiness that our
Lord is calling us to is one who goes beyond the call of
duty, to be more than just, but to be compassionate. Of
course, in God justice and mercy are one. Even for us
mercy is often an obligation in justice because mercy
has been given to us by God. However, when we speak
of mercy as separate from justice, we are speaking of it
when it goes beyond the obligation of duty. This leads
us to our second pillar of holiness – COMPASSION.
Until the next time, may you be Just so that you may
receive the Divine Mercy.
